Athletic Club fans turn cold on Nico Williams over Barcelona move

As the likelihood of Nico Williams' departure increases, the first major public reaction has already taken place back in his hometown.
A mural in Barakaldo, a municipality located in the Basque Country, which featured both Nico and his older brother, Inaki Williams, has been altered.

In the early hours of Sunday, a group of individuals erased Nico's image from the wall. What remains is not just the absence of the young star's face, but also a strong message painted next to it.
'Joan edo geratu, errespetua galdu duzu.' (Translation: 'Go or stay. You have lost respect.').
The mural originally went up in March 2024, following Athletic Club's Copa del Rey triumph. Over time, other club icons like Iker Muniain and Oscar De Marcos were added.
However, the recent act of defacing shows how divided emotions have become, especially among fans who feel betrayed by Nico's possible exit.
Barcelona working behind the scenes
Despite the controversy, the transfer looks set to go through. Barcelona's sporting director Deco has already confirmed that the club is actively working to finalise the move.

The player's camp is also playing its part. Nico's agent, Felix Tainta, is now trying to convince Athletic Club to accept a payment structure that would allow Barça to pay the fee in instalments rather than all at once.
The release clause currently stands at €58 million, but with inflation factored in, the total amount could reach €62 million unless both clubs reach a favourable agreement soon.
If all goes according to plan, Nico Williams could soon be wearing the Barcelona shirt, fulfilling a move that now seems more inevitable than ever, even if it comes at the cost of upsetting his hometown supporters.

2025 La Liga Season Preview: Predictions for how the top 3 teams finish

LaLiga 2025 La Liga Season Preview: Predictions for how the top 3 teams finish Published Aug. 15, 2025 10:32 a.m. ET share facebook x reddit link With the 2026 FIFA World Cup under a year away, many eyes will be on the upcoming La Liga campaign, which kicks off today with two matches. La Liga is home to some of the biggest and brightest stars in world soccer, including Lamine Yamal, Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior. Last year, Barcelona brought home the trophy with Real Madrid just four points behind. How will this year's season work out? Check out the predictions below. Note: League positions reflect last season's finish. Baca was just seconds away from reaching the UEFA Champions League final last season under first-year manager Hansi Flick. This season, the Blaugrana are looking to go at least one step further. Who says they can't? Eighteen-year-old Lamine Yamal is on his way to becoming the world's best player — if he isn't already. Fellow Ballon d'Or candidate Raphinha had 34 goals in all competitions in 2024-25, doubling his previous career-best. Robert Lewandowski, who turns 37 on Aug. 21, remains an elite striker. Pedri runs the show behind them. The rest of the regulars return, too, with forward Marcus Rashford the marquee summer addition. The record 15-time European champs are coming off what, by their standards, was a dreadful 2024-25, with no major titles secured. But Los Blancos still boast one of the deepest, most expensive squads on Planet Fútbol. And Kylian Mbappé & Co. are now led by one of the sport's great up-and-coming coaches in former Real Madrid captain Xabi Alonso, who replaced the legendary Carlo Ancelotti in June. Can Atleti end their four-year title drought and beat Barcelona and Real Madrid to La Liga glory this season? Occasionally, Madrid's other team outlasts Spain's double-headed monster. Longtime manager Diego Simeone will be hoping his team is due after a strong summer transfer window which saw $185 million-worth of new talent arrive — including former Villarreal attacker Álex Baena, USMNT midfielder Johnny Cardoso and Argentine World Cup-winner (and Atlanta United alum) Thiago Almada. Hansi Flick gives verdict on Marc-Andre ter Stegen situation, unhappy with star in preseason

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has been positive about Marc-Andre ter Stegen's situation at the club, and also revealed one player he was not happy with during their preseason tour of Asia. Ter Stegen is expected to be out for several months, but when he returned is likely to be at the bottom of the pecking order in terms of goalkeepers. Speaking ahead of Barcelona's La Liga opener against RCD Mallorca, Flick admitted he was not happy with Inigo Martinez's departure, nor with Barcelona's registration situation, with little over 24 hours to go before they kick off. Flick also confirmed that the call to bring in Joan Garcia and make him the number one was decision he made with the club. 'For me, it's a mutual decision. It's about the future of the club. Joan is a fantastic goalkeeper, as is Tek; he has experience. I'm happy with both of our goalkeepers.' 'The important thing is that he recovers' – Flick on ter Stegen Image via Infromacion/Quique Garcia When asked about ter Stegen and his particular turmoil, Flick called for dialogue and peace. His stand-off over sending his medical report to La Liga was reportedly solved by a meeting between the German goalkeeper and the President Joan Laporta. 'The most important thing is that we talk together, that we are together and that he can return to playing at the very high level he has. He has to recover and return, that's the most important thing. He's demonstrated for many years that he can be at this high level. And he has to get back to that. We're on his side to help the team.' 'Lamine Yamal's work off the ball is important' – Flick All eyes will be on Lamine Yamal this season, the new inhabitant of Barcelona's number 10 shirt. Flick was keen to place emphasis on Lamine Yamal's defending as much as his prowess with the ball at his feet. 'In the end, the most important thing is that we win as a team. He's an important part of the team. I'm very happy with what I see; he's training well, not just with the ball, but also with pressing. You saw that against Como, when he won the ball back. He's very good, the way he trains, and he has a lot of room for improvement. It's going to be a great season. Goals aren't the most important thing; the most important thing is that we win.' 'I wasn't happy with Dani Olmo in preseason' Meanwhile competition for places in the final third has only increased with the arrival of Marcus Rashford. In particular, behind their forward, Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, Gavi and Raphinha can all play there. 'Last season he was spectacular. We have quality in many positions. Olmo can also play there. Every player has a mission on the team. The most important thing is that I have to manage it. I wasn't entirely happy with the start of preseason from Olmo, but these last two weeks have been very good in training, and you could see it against Como.'

Barcelona captain may be set for January loan amidst financial issues

Marc Andre Ter Stegen was stripped of Barcelona's captaincy and was immediately restored days later after a massive drama in the Catalan capital that saw the club and the player reach an agreement anti-climactically. Despite insisting that he would not sign the documents that permit the club to use his salary space for registrations, the German international eventually agreed to approve the move and earned back his captaincy. After all, his surgery rules him out of action for close to four months. For now, his situation is one of calm for Barcelona. A lot will change, however, as the winter transfer window nears. A loan operation As relayed by AS in a recent update, Barcelona and Ter Stegen will continue negotiating in silence until the next decisive moment arrives in January. Ter Stegen could leave in January. (Photo by) With the FIFA World Cup slated for next year, the German star will look to return to regular playing time next year. With it likely impossible at Barcelona, he will prioritise an exit in the winter. A departure, thus, appears likely, but it remains unclear how the move will eventually unfold. After all, the conditions are not conducive to a permanent transfer immediately. Feeling hard done by the club, the player refuses to forgo any part of his salary and will not make any concessions, thus ruling out any termination of contract or immediate transfer. Barcelona may thus have to find a way out on loan for the captain if they wish to keep Joan Garcia registered. Another possibility remains that the goalkeeper insists on staying and being registered for the second half of the season, something that would generate great tension on the board for it will directly threaten Garcia's registration.
