Gundogan scores twice as Man City hit six to progress

BBC News23-06-2025
Ilkay Gundogan scored twice as Manchester City thrashed United Arab Emirates side Al Ain to comfortably book a place in the last-16 of the Club World Cup.Pep Guardiola's men backed up their opening game win over Wydad AC with a ruthless performance but will have to beat Juventus to top Group G and avoid a meeting with the winners of Real Madrid's group.City took the lead after only eight minutes courtesy of Gundogan's fortuitous strike, sending an attempted chipped cross sailing over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net, while the German delightfully dinked home in the second half.
In between, Claudio Echeverri curled in a sublime free-kick from the edge of the box on his first start and Josko Gvardiol sent a header against the post as City threatened to run riot in the opening half an hour.City went 3-0 up before half-time courtesy of Erling Haaland's penalty after Ramy Rabia bundled over Manuel Akanji in the box - the referee awarding the spot-kick after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor.Oscar Bobb came off the bench to cut inside and fire in at the near post and fellow substitute Rayan Cherki scored his first goal for the club with a low, thumping drive late on.Al Ain qualified for the competition after winning the 2024 Asian Champions League under ex-Argentina striker Hernan Crespo and are now led by former Watford boss Vladimir Ivic, but they were well beaten by their superior opponents.
What was the main talking point?
Though it was a balmy 31C in Atlanta at the local kick-off time of 9pm, the heat and humidity was not a factor as the match was played inside the incredible 71,000-capacity venue, which is enclosed and fitted with air-conditioning, and City coolly despatched the Arab opposition without issues.City boss Guardiola named a fully-changed starting line-up from the opening game win over Wydad, handing full debuts to left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri and midfielder Echeverri, while Bernardo Silva took the armband for the first time since being appointed club captain.
Which players stood out?
Both first-time starters did no harm to their prospects, especially attacking Algerian Ait-Nouri.Signed from Wolves for £31m, he already looks accomplished down the left flank, with his darts inside and crosses into the box causing Al Ain all sorts of issues.Argentine midfielder Echeverri was handed a surprise appearance ahead of Jack Grealish in the FA Cup final defeat by Crystal Palace last month and converted a delightful finish which will have caught the eye of boss Guardiola.
What next for these teams?
Manchester City face Serie A giants Juve in a huge European clash in Orlando on Thursday, while Al Ain and Wydad AC have both suffered two defeats apiece and are already out.

Toffees think City misfit Jack is the Greal deal

Jack Grealish will leave Manchester City this summer after becoming surplus to Pep Guardiola's requirements and his next move could define a career which is in danger of falling way short of what once appeared to be an unlimited ceiling. The Birmingham-born attacking midfielder first hit prominence with boyhood club Aston Villa and nobly stuck with them when they were relegated from the Premier League to help them return to the top flight. He was club captain before moving to City four years ago in a £100million deal which made him the most expensive English player ever, since surpassed by Declan Rice following his switch from West Ham to Arsenal. Despite early indications he was primed to blossom under Guardiola's guidance and playing a key role in their Treble-winning season, jaunty Jack found it increasingly difficult to command a regular position in the starting line-up at the Etihad Stadium and last season he played in just 20 Premier League games, scoring once and providing a solitary assist. Grealish was a notable absentee from the City squad which featured in the Club World Cup and is free to find another club to help him rebuild his career. A return to Villa at 11/4 with bet365 would be the ideal solution while West Ham have been linked with the fallen star, who turns 30 in September, and a move to London's East End is 14/1 with the same firm. Newcastle could use some of the £150m they are expected to rake in from their reluctant sale of Sweden striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool, to potentially appease fans with an eye-catching move for Grealish at the same odds with Ladbrokes and Coral while Tottenham, who were close to signing him before he went to City, could make a move at 20/1 with bet365. They missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White when it appeared they were only a medical away from springing the £60million release clause in his Nottingham Forest contract and Grealish could provide the flair required in their attack. Serie A champions Napoli would love Grealish to ply his undoubted skills in Italy and are 8/1 with bet365 but it is likely he will stay in England although the same odds with the same firm that he remains at City look well wide of the mark. Everton are the market leaders to land the 34-cap England international as they start the new season in their luxurious new home. Toffees manager David Moyes is apparently keen to build his side Grealish, who would relish the opportunity of a free role as he orchestrates play from their midfield. The sticking point for City may be the Toffees' desire to take him on loan but he is currently 2/1 with William Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral and Betfred to be an Everton player next term. Ralph Beckett's runner won a decent handicap at Sandown at the end of April but blew his chance of victory on the big stage after making a slow start in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot. A decent exit from the stalls on the South Downs, where he won last September, should see Sing Us A Song emerge triumphant at 5/2 with bet365. Jabaara was first home in the Oak Tree Stakes 12 months ago but lost his place due to interference and the Musselburgh winner two races ago can be a major player this time around at 11/2 with William Hill while Dickensian is quicker than Oliver Twist in the race for second helpings and can be first past the post in the Molecomb five furlong dash at 8/1 with bet365. But in the week Happy Gilmore 2 is released it would be fitting if Carl Spackler, named after the crazy groundsman played by Bill Murray in the superior Caddyshack, ran strongly. Twice triumphant at Keeneland and once at Saratoga in the United States before moving to his current yard in Australia, he ran too freely in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot but should do much better here and is nailed on at 18/4 to finish in the top four with bet365. Chelsea's Portugal forward Joao Felix joins Al-Nassr

July 29 (Reuters) - Portugal forward Joao Felix has joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr from Club World Cup winners Chelsea on a two-year contract, the two teams said on Tuesday. "Let's win together ... Joao Felix is a Nasraoui," Al-Nassr wrote on X, along with a short video of the striker. "I'm here to have fun and win together," the 25-year-old said. Neither club disclosed any financial details of the deal, but Sky Sports said the transfer could cost up to 43.7 million pounds ($58.17 million), consisting of an initial 26.2 million fee plus 17.5 million in potential add-ons. Felix moved from Benfica to Atletico Madrid in 2019 when he was only 19 and then joined Chelsea on loan for the 2022-2023 campaign before being loaned to Barcelona the following season. He made a permanent move to Chelsea in August 2024. After just six months, Chelsea loaned the forward to AC Milan before his latest transfer to Saudi Arabia. Felix will play alongside Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, who are coached by compatriot Jorge Jesus. They face Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Super Cup semi-finals on August 19. What are cooling jackets and how do they work?

Manchester United are using cooling jackets in a bid to help their players deal with the heat during their Premier League Super Series campaign in the United jackets have been around in various forms as early as the 1950s and 60s, first used by the military and have since been used in a range of sports including Formula 1, cycling, tennis and are designed to reduce an athlete's core and skin temperature, with studies showing it can lead to an improvement in endurance, performance and limit the risks of heat stroke and heat type currently used by United are from a range by kit manufacturers Adidas that were launched earlier this cooling jackets are being worn by players following warm-ups and at half-time of their three matches in the United at the 2025 Club World Cup this summer experienced extreme heat in a number of matches. Multiple cooling breaks were taken, as well as some stadiums installing large mist fans on the sidelines. Borussia Dortmund's substitutes also spent the first half of their group stage match against Mamelodi Sundowns sat in the changing room to avoid the heat. How are cooling jackets used and do they actually work? The earliest models of cooling jackets used by the army required a power supply to circulate cold water around the body, but technological advancements since then mean this is no longer the Adidas released their Climacool System technology earlier this year, it consisted of an insulated jacket that goes over the top of a cooling vest."For the same exercise intensity in a hot compared to a cooler condition, the heart rate's higher, the body temperature's higher. That can lead to things like heat stroke, or even maybe even worse, heat exhaustion," said Dr Chris Tyler, a reader in environmental physiology from the University of Roehampton."What the vest will claim to do is reduce all of that. So they will lower the body temperature, lower the heart rate and lower the strain."The use of the vest is key into its effectiveness. There is a major difference between how someone's body feels to them and their actual body need to be worn for a sustained period and cover as much of the body as possible. This allows more time for the body to effectively cool down quicker, reducing the risks attached to being too hot and also helping athletes to run quicker and for longer with less strain. A difference maker for the 2026 World Cup? Given the conditions during the Club World Cup in what was unofficially a warm-up for the 2026 men's World Cup, it gives a good indication of what can be expected during next summer's tournament across the United States, Canada and to the 32-team Club World Cup, there will be 48 nations at the World Cup. This will mean more daytime matches and additional challenges to players when it comes to dealing with the weather."Certainly some sort of proactive cooling intervention," Dr Tyler replied when asked if cooling vests will be a necessity at the Club World Cup."The best way to avoid it is to not play in those conditions, but we know that's not going to happen for lots of reasons."There could be some proactive scheduling. I've seen people talk about very early kick-offs or very late kick-offs, and they do that in La Liga - that tends to kick off very late, for example."We saw players struggling this summer, there's no reason to think we won't see them struggling next summer as the teams will be more likely to be adopting cooling strategies to try and combat that."Dr Tyler added that he expects cooling jackets, or at least some form of cooling equipment will be used widespread across the World Cup."Definitely. All the teams that can, will. Those teams that have huge support behind them certainly will and teams are already preparing for next year's World Cup with an eye on the heat," he explained."Some of those might be off the shelf measures, some of them might be bespoke measures."The better teams generally are impacted less by the heat because they can control the tempo, they can make the opponent run, those sorts of things."I think every national teams should be able to have the resources to have something and not to sort of be overlooked." Cooling jackets in Formula One In March, Adidas released their Climacool System, consisting of an insulated jacket and a specially created cooling vest.F1 team Mercedes used the jackets for any races in which hot weather would affect the performance of their manufacturer say that in hot conditions, drivers can experience temperatures between 55C and 60C which leads to a weight loss of 4.2kg (9.3 pounds) just in sweat during a single race.F1 drivers tend to immerse themselves in water ahead of a race to cool their whole body down in advance to their race preparations."Typically, [F1 drivers] will do that an hour before the race," Dr Tyler said."What they're doing is when they put the vests on that's largely perceptual. What they're trying to do is as much as possible is feel cooler for as long as possible which is what those vests are doing."Next year, the FIA are going to really introduce various in-car cooling suits when the races are hot enough. Now that's going to be very similar to [what] the military used to use. "The drivers will be sitting, so they won't be doing as much activity as if say you were running, but they're going to sitting on an engine, they're going to be sitting on a hot track."I have my doubts that they're going to be able to extract enough heat to actually lower the strain of the drivers, but they're certainly going to make the drivers feel a bit cooler."It also provides a nice platform for all of their companies and sponsors to have another place to have their badge which is something that the Formula One teams have suddenly cottoned onto."This article is the latest from BBC Sport's Ask Me Anything team.
