The United Arab Emirates expressed its solidarity with Afghanistan and conveyed its sincere condolences over victims of the traffic accident bus collision which resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries in Herat province, western Afghanistan.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) conveyed the UAE's sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, as well as to the people of Afghanistan over this tragedy, along with its wishes for a speedy recovery for all the injured.
The death toll from a collision between a bus carrying Afghan migrants returning from Iran and two other vehicles in western Afghanistan has risen to 78, provincial officials said on Wednesday.
Seventy-six people died in the accident in Herat province's Guzara district on Tuesday night when the passenger bus hit a motorcycle and a truck transporting fuel, causing an explosive fire, officials and eyewitnesses said.
Two of the three survivors later died of their injuries, officials said on Wednesday.
"Two injured individuals from last night's incident succumbed to severe injuries, increasing the number of victims to 78," a statement by the provincial information department said, citing representatives of the military hospital that received victims.
Seventeen children were among those killed, according to army spokesman Mujeebullah Ansar, though a provincial police source put the number at 19.

UK targets family fortune of Iranian leader's ally with sanctions

Hossein Shamkhani, the son of a close aide to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was hit with UK sanctions on Thursday. The British government sanctioned Mr Shamkhani, along with holding companies Admiral Shipping Group and Milavous Group, plus hedge fund Ocean Leonid Investments. He is the son of Ali Shamkhani, a former senior security official who was injured in the Israeli bombing campaign on Iran in June. '[Hossein] Shamkhani has facilitated and provided support to hostile activity by the government of Iran, namely activity which is intended to cause the destabilisation of the United Kingdom or any other country including Israel and Ukraine,' an official statement on Thursday said. The move follows recent enforcement actions by the US and the European Union to target the same network, which the Trump administration called the biggest sanctions escalation against Tehran in nearly a decade. The Shamkhani network is believed to have emerged as a major player in the export of Russian and Iranian oil, and established a hedge fund to help manage the proceeds. The UK Financial Conduct Authority had licensed Ocean Leonid activities in the country until November. Imposing its own sanctions this year, the US Treasury said: "The Shamkhani family further exploits their ill-gotten wealth to obtain access to benefits unavailable to everyday Iranians, including owning exclusive properties around the world and obtaining foreign passports in exchange for substantial financial investments."

What are black points? They are demerits added to your driving record when you break traffic rules. They are linked to your Emirates ID, not your car. UAE detects 405 cases of fake Emiratisation in half-year review

A total of 405 fake recruitments to bypass Emiratisation targets have been detected at private sector companies across the UAE during the first half of this year. Releasing the numbers, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation said they identified the illegal practices during field inspections and digital monitoring system. The companies were caught issuing work contracts without actually offering employment to the Emirati nationals. The ministry added that legal action has been taken against the companies. Under the UAE's Naif programme, private firms must increase the percentage of Emirati recruitment by two per cent every year to reach at least 10 per cent by 2026. The authority called on the public to report violations via the Ministry's call centre at 600590000, its smart app, or the official website.
