Most Americans believe countries should recognize Palestinian state, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds
Some 33% of respondents did not agree that U.N. members should recognize a Palestinian state and 9% did not answer.
The six-day poll, which closed on Monday, was taken within weeks of three countries, close U.S. allies Canada, Britain and France, announcing they intend to recognize the State of Palestine. This ratcheted up pressure on Israel as starvation spreads in Gaza.
The survey was taken amid hopes that Israel and Hamas would agree on a ceasefire to provide a break in the fighting, free some hostages and ease shipments of humanitarian assistance.
Two officials said on Tuesday Israel was studying Hamas' response to a potential deal for a 60-day truce and the release of half the Israeli hostages still held in Gaza.
Britain, Canada, Australia and several of their European allies said last week that the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn Palestinian enclave has reached "unimaginable levels," as aid groups warned that Gazans are on the verge of famine.
The United Nations human rights office said on Tuesday Israel was not letting enough supplies into the Gaza Strip to avert widespread starvation. Israel has denied responsibility for hunger in Gaza, accusing Hamas of stealing aid shipments, which Hamas denies.
A larger majority of the Reuters/Ipsos poll respondents, 65%, said the U.S. should take action in Gaza to help people facing starvation, with 28% disagreeing. The number disagreeing included 41% of President Donald Trump's Republicans.
Trump and many of his fellow Republicans take an "America First" approach to international relations, backing steep cuts to the country's international food and medical assistance programs in the belief that U.S. funds should assist Americans, not those outside its borders.
The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led fighters stormed into Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli figures. Israel's offensive has since killed more than 62,000 Palestinians, plunged Gaza into humanitarian crisis and displaced most of its population, according to Gaza health authorities.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll also showed that 59% of Americans believe that Israel's military response in Gaza has been excessive. Thirty-three percent of respondents disagreed.
In a similar Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in February 2024, 53% of respondents agreed that Israel's response had been excessive, and 42% disagreed.
The latest Reuters/Ipsos survey, conducted online, gathered responses from 4,446 U.S. adults nationwide and had a margin of error of about 2 percentage points.

Donald Trump has demanded a Federal Reserve governor resign over fraud allegations in a fresh attack on the independence of America's central bank. This month, Mr Trump nominated Stephen Miran, the chairman of his council of economic advisors, as a temporary board member to replace Adriana Kugler, who announced she was stepping down before her term was due to expire in January. Mr Miran's nomination needs to be approved by the Senate, but it is feasible that he could be in place in time for the Fed's next interest rate decision on Sept 17. Mr Trump and Scott Bessent, the treasury secretary, are in the process of choosing a permanent replacement for Ms Kugler on the board and become Mr Powell's replacement as chairman.

Federal prosecutors in Washington will no longer seek charges for rifle, shotgun possession
Aug 20 (Reuters) - Federal prosecutors in Washington, D.C., will no longer seek charges against people who violate a local law prohibiting individuals from carrying rifles or shotguns in the nation's capital, the Washington Post reported late on Tuesday. The decision, which represents a break from the office's prior policy, comes amid what President Donald Trump has described as a crime crackdown in Washington. The president has deployed hundreds of National Guard troops and federal agents to the city's streets to combat what he says is rampant crime, in an extraordinary exercise of presidential power. In a statement provided to Reuters, the District of Columbia's U.S. attorney, Jeanine Pirro, said the new policy will not preclude prosecutors from charging people with other illegal firearms crimes, such as a convicted felon found in possession of a gun. "We will continue to seize all illegal and unlicensed firearms," she said. The D.C. code in question bars anyone from carrying a rifle or shotgun with narrow exceptions. D.C. crime rates have stayed mostly the same as they were a year ago, according to the police department's weekly statistics. D.C. has also experienced the same declines in violent crime and property crime as it did beforehand, according to the data. Former CIA director Burns calls Trump firings of U.S. workers "a war on...expertise"
WASHINGTON, Aug 20 (Reuters) - William Burns, former CIA director and veteran U.S. diplomat, on Wednesday issued a scathing rebuke of the Trump administration's mass firings of federal workers, saying they are aimed at stifling dissenting views and will harm U.S. security. "Under the guise of reform, you all got caught in the crossfire of a retribution campaign - of a war on public service and expertise," Burns wrote in a "Letter to America's Discarded Public Servants" published in The Atlantic magazine. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Burns was CIA director under Democratic former President Joe Biden, and a foreign service officer. He served three Democratic and three Republican presidents. His career included stints as U.S. ambassador to Russia and deputy secretary of State. Taking aim at U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping purge of federal workers, including State Department staff and U.S. intelligence officers, Burns said that civil servants recognize the need for serious government reforms.
