Governor Glenn Youngkin Announces $3 Million Grant to Support Civica's Affordable Insulin Programs

PETERSBURG, Va., Aug. 7, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Governor Glenn Youngkin joined Civica officials at the company's Petersburg manufacturing facility to announce a $3 million grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia to accelerate Civica's efforts to develop and produce affordable insulin for Americans living with diabetes.
'We are proud to partner with Civica in their mission to make essential medicines more accessible,' said Governor Youngkin. 'This investment reflects our belief in the power of public-private collaboration to improve lives and strengthen communities.'
These funds will support the production of insulin aspart, a rapid-acting human insulin analog used to regulate blood sugar in adults and children with diabetes. Civica plans to produce both rapid- and long-acting insulins at its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Petersburg, Va., where the company now employs more than 200 skilled workers.1 Over 8 million people living with diabetes need rapid-acting and/or long-acting insulin.
The Governor also announced that he had officially proclaimed August 7 – 14 2025 'Life Sciences Week' demonstrating the Commonwealth's commitment to 'accelerating the advancement of the life sciences through public-private partnerships, STEM education, workforce development, and sustained investment in research and development.'
'We are grateful for the Commonwealth's support,' said Ned McCoy, Civica's President and CEO. 'This funding will help us move closer toward our goal of ensuring that no one has to choose between insulin and other basic needs.'
Civica and Virginia officials were joined by Lynn Starr, Chief Global Advocacy Officer of Breakthrough T1D, the leading global type 1 diabetes research and advocacy organization.
'More than one million American adults live with type 1 diabetes, and many still, sadly, ration their insulin, due to the prohibitively high cost of this necessary medication,' said Starr. 'Civica's work will help to make insulin more affordable for people across the country.'
Breakthrough T1D is among more than two dozen organizations and philanthropists, along with the states of Virginia and California, that have partnered with Civica to support the development of affordable insulins.
Civica's insulin initiative aims to provide patients with predictable, transparent pricing — no more than $30 per vial or $55 for a box of five pens — regardless of insurance status.
About CivicaCivica is a nonprofit pharmaceutical company established to address drug shortages. It was founded by a group of U.S. health systems and philanthropies who, after more than a decade of chronic shortages, recognized that the market was not self-correcting and that a different approach is required. Civica works to deliver a safe, stable, and affordable supply of essential medicines to U.S. patients.

Anwar: Pondok teachers must master AI to stay relevant

MACHANG: Religious school teachers nationwide must acquire new knowledge in artificial intelligence (AI) to keep pace with technological developments and strengthen their resilience in Islam, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He said that without mastering the latest technology, pondok (Islamic religious school) teachers risk being left behind and unprepared to face new challenges in the digital world. Anwar stressed that while it was important for these teachers to adapt to current needs by learning AI, the traditional practice of teaching through classical texts should remain intact. "The traditional method of reading classical texts for pondok teachers will not be disrupted and will continue to be preserved. "What we are doing is adding to it with new demands, namely, the field of AI. "Without the mastery of AI by pondok teachers, the field will remain an American- and Western-based version," he said in his speech at the Kelantan Ijtima' Madani of Ulama and Pondok Teachers here today. Also present were Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. At the event, the prime minister presented RM1.03 million in contributions to pondok institutions participating in UMRAN 2025 (Muzakarah Umara' dan Ulama' Pondok Kebangsaan 2025). Anwar also said it was time to rebuild the historical defensive fortifications of the Muslim community to counter secular influences. "Last month, I called in representatives from the Finance Ministry to explore how we can select pondok institutions to serve once again as fortifications. That is the true meaning of Madani," he said.

Harvard patents targeted by Trump administration

The Trump administration on Friday ordered a comprehensive review of Harvard University's federally funded research programs, and threatened to take title to or grant licenses from the school's lucrative portfolio of patents. In a letter to University President Alan Garber and obtained by Reuters, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick accused Harvard of breaching its legal and contractual requirements tied to the research programs and patents. Lutnick also said the Commerce Department has begun a 'march-in' process under the federal Bayh-Dole Act that could let the government take ownership of the patents or grant licenses. Signed in 1980, that law ensures that Americans benefit from inventions funded through taxpayer dollars, a senior administration official said. 'The Department places immense value on the groundbreaking scientific and technological advancements that emerge from the Government's partnerships with institutions like Harvard,' Lutnick wrote. He said that carried a 'critical responsibility' for Harvard to ensure that its intellectual property derived from federal funding is used to maximize benefits to the American people. Harvard did not immediately respond to requests for comment. President Donald Trump has made bolstering the country's manufacturing and economic competitiveness a priority of his second White House term, including by raising tariffs on imports from dozens of countries. ADDED PRESSURE Friday's letter ratchets up White House pressure on Harvard, which it has accused of civil rights violations for failing to address antisemitism on campus. Harvard sued in April after the administration began stripping or freezing billions of dollars of federal research money. Lutnick demanded that Harvard provide by September 5 a list of all patents stemming from federally funded research grants, including how the patents are used and whether any licensing requires 'substantial U.S. manufacturing.' As of July 1, 2024, Harvard held more than 5,800 patents, and had more than 900 technology licenses with over 650 industry partners, according to a university website. Other schools that have faced federal funding losses have included Columbia University, which last month agreed to pay more than $220 million to settle the government's antisemitism claims. The New York Times has said Harvard was open to spending up to $500 million to settle similar claims. Signed by President Jimmy Carter about six weeks before he left the White House, the bipartisan Bayh-Dole Act was sponsored by Senators Birch Bayh of Indiana and Bob Dole of Kansas. Carter said at the time it was important that industrial innovation promote U.S. economic health, and the legislation 'goes far toward strengthening the effectiveness of the patent incentive in stimulating innovation in the United States.' Many civil rights experts, faculty and White House critics believe the Trump administration's targeting of schools is a pretext to assert federal control and threaten academic freedom and free speech. - Reuters

MSF condemns 'orchestrated killings' at Gaza aid sites

KUALA LUMPUR: Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has accused Israeli forces and private American contractors of orchestrating violence against Palestinians at food distribution sites run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), calling for the immediate shutdown of these operations. In a new report titled "This is not aid. This is orchestrated killing," MSF documents targeted and indiscriminate attacks at GHF-run sites in Gaza, which have become deadly hotspots amid the ongoing conflict. Between June 7 and July 24, MSF treated 1,380 casualties — including 28 fatalities — at its clinics near the GHF distribution points. Among them were 71 children wounded by gunfire, 25 of whom were under the age of 15. MSF General Director Raquel Ayora alleged that children have been shot in the chest while simply reaching for food. "People have been crushed or suffocated in stampedes, and entire crowds have been gunned down at distribution points. In nearly 54 years of MSF's operations, we have rarely witnessed such systematic violence against unarmed civilians. "These Gaza Humanitarian Foundation distribution sites, which are supposed to provide aid, have instead become laboratories of cruelty. This must end immediately." MSF's data shows 11 per cent of gunshot wounds treated were to the head and neck, with another 19 per cent to the chest, abdomen, and back — indicating intentional targeting rather than accidental fire. Mohammed Riad Tabasi, a patient at the Al-Mawasi clinic, recounted, "I saw it with my own eyes, about 20 corpses around me. All of them shot in the head, in the stomach." The GHF, operated under full Israeli military control and "secured" by private American armed contractors, replaced the UN-led aid effort in May amid allegations of aid diversion. MSF called the scheme a "laboratory of cruelty" and urged governments to suspend all financial and political support. MSF emergency coordinator Aitor Zabalgogeazkoa said patients also suffer theft and violent assaults while trying to secure or protect food rations, with many listed as "Beaten By Others" in medical records. "On Aug 1, 15-year-old Mahmoud Jamal Al-Attar was killed at a GHF site while trying to get food. "We only treat a fraction of those killed or injured. The murder of children at these sites is intentional." MSF calls on governments, especially the United States, to suspend all support for the GHF and urges the immediate restoration of UN-coordinated aid distribution to protect civilians in Gaza.
