JITRA (July 7): A married couple and their four children were found dead in a car that was pulled from Sungai Korok, in Kampung Kemboja, near here, this morning.
A relative of the victims, Nor Syafiqah Ishak, 28, confirmed the identities of the six, who had been reported missing since last Saturday.
The dead were identified as Muhammad Azim Izat Ishak, 32; his wife Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31; and their children Putra Rayyan Nur Izzat, 9; Hawa Adriana, 8; Annayla Humaira, 7; and six-month-old Tuah Haydar.
Nor Syafiqah said they started searching for her brother Muhammad Azim's family along a stretch of the river soon after they were reported missing.
'We found no clues because the river is big, deep and murky.
'This morning, when the water receded slightly, someone spotted the edge of a car bonnet, and we all rushed over,' she told reporters at the scene.
She said family members identified the victims at the scene after the car was retrieved from the river by firemen.
According to Nor Syafiqah, the family of six had spent the night at a relative's house in Taman Seri Aman in Jitra, before reportedly leaving for home in Jerlun at around 5.30 am on Saturday.
'But when they never arrived, we started to worry and tried calling and searching for them. By midday, when there was still no sign of them, we filed a police report,' she said.
Meanwhile, Kedah Fire and Rescue Department Zone 1 chief Ahmad Aminuddin Abd Rahim said they received a call regarding the car in the river at 8.38 am.
'It was reported that a Proton Iswara Sedan was in the river and that six victims — a man, a woman, three children and an infant — were inside the vehicle.
'The recovery operation was completed by 11 am and identification of the victims was carried out by next-of-kin,' he said.
He added that according to rescue personnel, all the victims were found in the rear passenger seat, and the vehicle's windows had to be broken to retrieve the bodies.
'The river is six metres deep, and tyre marks, believed to be from braking, were found about one metre from the riverbank,' he said. – Bernama bomba car found dead lead river

'Op Metal': MACC Raids Two E-waste Recycling Plants In Penang

BUTTERWORTH, July 15 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today raided two electronic waste (e-waste) recycling factories suspected of bribing enforcement officers, leading to significant tax revenue losses. The coordinated raids, conducted at 9 am under Op Metal, targeted one factory on Jalan Perusahaan Perai 3 in the Perai Industrial Area and another in Bukit Minyak, Bukit Mertajam. The action follows the recent exposure of a scrap metal smuggling syndicate, in which scrap metal was falsely declared as machinery and other items not subject to the government's 15 percent export tax. Now in its second day, Op Metal is being led by MACC's Special Operations Division in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Inland Revenue Board (IRB) and Bank Negara Malaysia under a multi-agency task force. MACC's Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad secured both premises, documented 25 local and foreign workers, and detained a man in his 50s, believed to be the chief operating officer, for further questioning and document retrieval. Meanwhile, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that 13 additional locations across Penang, Kedah, Johor and the Klang Valley were raided today. 'MACC is now identifying those colluding with the syndicate that smuggled scrap metal and e-waste through Port Klang and Penang Port, causing an estimated tax loss of over RM950 million over the past six years,' he said. Earlier, Bernama reported that the MACC had launched a major crackdown on scrap metal smuggling syndicates operating across five states, believed to have bribed enforcement officers to evade taxes, resulting in over RM950 million in revenue losses for the government. -- BERNAMA

Sarawak customs seize RM1 mln Doraemon-shaped ecstasy pills

KUCHING: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department in Sarawak successfully intercepted a drug smuggling attempt involving ecstasy pills shaped like the popular cartoon character Doraemon. The pills, worth RM1 million, were concealed inside Vitamin C bottles. Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya stated that the operation led to the seizure of 5.23 kilogrammes of the illegal substance during an inspection at a courier company in Sibu on June 20. Surveillance conducted over three days showed no one came forward to claim the suspicious package. Further examination revealed 12 plastic bottles labelled as 'Vitamin C 1000 tablets' containing aluminium packets filled with the Doraemon-shaped pills. The drugs, believed to be ecstasy, were smuggled via air courier from Peninsular Malaysia. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries severe penalties, including the death sentence or life imprisonment with a minimum of 15 strokes of the cane. – Bernama

Two loan shark members arrested for Tasek Gelugor arson

GEORGE TOWN: Two men suspected of being part of a loan shark syndicate have been arrested in connection with a fire that razed three houses in Tasek Gelugor last month. The suspects, both in their 20s, were detained in separate raids conducted by the Penang Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) on July 3. Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects also allegedly vandalised a house in Tanjong Tokong with paint on June 30. Several items were seized during the raids, including a Yamaha Y16Z motorcycle, sport rims, mobile phones, and clothing. During questioning, both men reportedly admitted involvement in the arson case, which caused an estimated RM300,000 in damages. Five cars and four motorcycles were also destroyed in the fire. The case is being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire. Police further revealed that the suspects may be linked to five other paint-splashing incidents currently under investigation. The fire, which occurred around 4.50 am on June 24 at Taman Tasek Gelugor Utama, did not result in any injuries. One victim later claimed on Facebook that the arson was related to loan shark activities, possibly targeting another house in the area. Reports indicated that a homeowner had received a debt repayment warning, though the affected houses were not the intended target. – Bernama
