
Going from corporate world to academia is beneficial
Prof Adri Drotskie, acting dean and academic director of the Johannesburg Business School (JBS) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), disproves the old adage that 'those who can, do; those who can't, teach…'
Before moving to academia, she had a successful career with some of the biggest brands in South Africa, something she says helps her 'bring business into the classroom'.
The classroom and education have always been her passion. Drotskie's career started in education as she studied through an education bursary.
Her bachelor's degree was in investment management, so finance was a big interest of hers. She then accepted a position in Transnet's finance department, where she was exposed to marketing, and she decided to do an honours degree. She ended up in the strategy department, 'where I found my niche and passion'.
Addicted to lifelong learning, Drotskie subsequently obtained an MCom in Business Management and an MPhil in Future Studies.
From Transnet, she moved to Absa, where she continued working in strategy and later served as general manager in strategic marketing.
'However, I always wanted to go back to education and started lecturing on the MCom programme at UJ. I completed my PhD and moved to UJ permanently.
'I was offered the position of MBA director at Henley Business School, where I served for five years, after which UJ lured me back, where I have been the past five years, initially as director of the School of Management and currently as academic director of JBS.
'Whereas most people start in academia and then enter the corporate world, I did it the other way round. I see it as a big benefit in the fields I specialise in, to bring business into the classroom.
'I also believe that you take on opportunities that come your way and experiment as best you can with new opportunities along the way.'

Positioning JBS among the best
She realises that taking UJ into the upper ranks of successful business schools is a daunting task, given the track record of more established business schools in the country. But she firmly believes the direction in which the seven-year-old JBS is heading will set it apart.
Business schools are mainly ranked based on their accreditation status, and JBS is now applying for its first accreditations, she said.
'You need to go through a cycle of offering programmes and achievements before you can apply for accreditations.
'Our MBA specialises in digital transformation, and this very important driver or disruptor is entrenched in all the curricula of the modules.
'Business leaders need to be equipped with an innovative and global mindset, utilising future technologies and digital transformation for societal impact.
'We are also the only school that offers a fully online MBA.'
JBS also has students from the public sector and entrepreneurs with their own businesses on the programme.
'We work with adult education and with people who are already in a workspace. We need to equip them with skills to grow in their businesses.'
Embracing AI and preparing for the future
She considers artificial intelligence (AI), or any of the future technologies, useful enablers, and therefore, business schools need to utilise AI in the way they teach and deliver programmes, as well as show its impact on all spheres of business, as we do at JBS through digital transformation.
'We should rather work with AI than against it. Students all use AI to do their assignments. We need to work with them to show them what AI's contribution can be to their own thinking and learning.'
This, and many other topical issues, were discussed at the recent AMBA/BGA Conference for Deans and Directors of Business Schools in Germany, attended by 430 people from 58 countries.
'Most of the presentations and discussions were about the challenges that business schools have to deal with in 2025 and beyond.
'Main trends were the global geopolitical situation – mainly the changes in the US and their impact on higher education and the UK's challenges post-Brexit; the economic uncertainty; the role of AI in teaching and assessments; changing the way we teach to Gen Z in future; jobs of the future and what to teach leaders of the future.'
Drotskie firmly believes that in the current complex economic landscape, an MBA qualification is most relevant.
'Given the complexity of the current worldwide economic landscape, it offers people working in the economy the competencies of critical thinking, problem-solving and design thinking.
'An MBA provides a leader or manager with a broad range of skills and knowledge across all the dimensions of business. It also gives them a world view as the focus is international or global.'
'Financial uncertainty is a global challenge that business schools currently face. A few years ago, companies paid for MBA studies, sponsoring students, but that is no longer the case. Universities now need to find bursaries and grants to assist students financially,' Drotskie said.

The ''tools down'' protest by FlySafair pilots has plunged operations into chaos, grounding flights and sparking a storm of outrage across social media. The chaos was triggered by failed wage talks, leading pilots to stage a tools-down protest that left scores of travellers stuck at airports nationwide. In a statement, FlySafair said that while most of their services remained on schedule, several flights were cancelled due to pilots who had initially agreed to work but later informed the airline, at the last minute, that they would no longer be flying. 'FlySafair confirms that operations continue largely as scheduled today, but unfortunately, a quantity of flights have had to be cancelled today. ''These flights were assigned to pilots who had confirmed their availability to fly, but who, late last night, reported that they would not fly. ''All other flights are operating as planned, and affected customers have been contacted directly using details provided at the time of booking. Should there be further disruptions, customers will be notified promptly. 'We thank our teams both on the aircraft and on the ground for their tireless commitment and hard work to ensure that disruptions are minimised as far as possible.' Social media erupted with backlash as frustrated users voiced their anger over the sudden cancellations. One user argued that companies thrive by rewarding employees with a share of profits instead of relying on unions, encouraging a culture of 'perform or exit.' FlySafair apologised for the disruption experienced by their customers and the wider public, assuring that they are working to resolve the situation swiftly. 'We deeply regret the impact this situation is having on our loyal customers and the broader flying public. Our goal remains to reach a reasonable resolution quickly, restore trust, and continue building the airline so many South Africans rely on.' Meanwhile, IOL reported that FlySafair said its hands were tied, after the company received last-minute updates from certain pilots informing the carrier that they would not make it to work on Monday morning, forcing the cancellation of at least 26 flights. In an interview with IOL at the OR Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park, Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer for FlySafair, said the interruption of flights is regrettable and has left some passengers stranded. "What we are experiencing at the moment is that we have an industrial action on the part of our pilots; they have embarked on a stay-away strike which started today. They have deemed it to happen for two weeks. "Unfortunately, we had a number of commitments from a number of pilots to be able to cover our schedule today. Late last night, we received information from several of them that they would be unable to fulfil their duties. ''As a result, we have had to cancel 26 of 174 flights today. So there have been cancellations and we apologise very deeply to our customers who have been stranded. Unfortunately, our hands are tied in this regard, because of the industrial action that is going on," he said. As an intervention, Gordon told IOL that Flysafair teams were assisting customers, and in some instances giving refunds. He said the negotiations with Solidarity are still ongoing. "We continue to approach them (the negotiations) with good faith. At this stage, we are still quite far apart. Unfortunately, the unions' demands are very high. They have been speaking about a demand of a 10 percent increase in salaries," said Gordon. "When one considers the full cost-to-company, that's more than 20.1 percent, which at the back of R1.8 to R2 million salary, which puts pilots within the top one percent of earners in this country, you can understand that it is just an untenable position. Earlier, IOL reported about the long queues formed at the FlySafair counters on Monday morning as the airline grappled with industrial action. In an interview with IOL at OR Tambo International Airport, Solidarity's deputy general-secretary, Helgard Cronje, said operations have been impacted by the labour impasse between FlySafair and the union, which Solidarity said has resulted in workers being blocked from working. Solidarity is the union representing FlySafair's pilots. Cronje told IOL that on Thursday, Solidarity gave FlySafair notice for a one-day strike, basically to get them back to the negotiation table. One student who opted not to be identified said he was scheduled to travel to Cape Town, but his flight has been cancelled. He has been put on standby for a flight on Tuesday. 'I have been told that there is no flight today and I must come tomorrow (Tuesday). I am not guaranteed a flight; they said I am on standby. S&P downgrade exposes Transnet's operational crisis as reform efforts stall

Image: File The decision by S&P Global to downgrade Transnet's credit rating was disappointing news for those of us in business eager to see the utility performing better. This downgrade is not just a reflection of Transnet's financial distress – it is a damning indictment of years of failed leadership, union militancy and a government that continues to bail out state-owned enterprises without demanding fundamental reform. S&P believes that Transnet is burning cash without the prospect of turning around its operating performance and that Transnet Freight Rail will fail to reach its volume targets. The business has high fixed costs, major capital expenditure requirements and significant debt. S&P's downgrade reflects its concern that its ability to service that debt is weakening. The rating agency's assessment is that Transnet is 'entirely dependent on state support' and faces 'sizable negative free operating cash flow'. When a company burns through R13.5 billion annually in negative free cash flow while its workers receive 6% pay increases – double the inflation rate – we are witnessing a textbook example of unsustainable economics enabled by government guarantees. S&P is calling out what has become clear to many of us – Transnet is seemingly resisting change and moving too slowly. This compares to Eskom, which has been able to stabilise its operating performance and is pushing forward deep and fundamental reforms. The solution is not more bailouts or government guarantees. It's time for National Treasury to attach strict conditions to any future support – conditions that enable the private sector competition that Transnet desperately needs. The recent progress in separating rail infrastructure from operations, driven by Operation Vulindlela is a start, but we need to move much faster. Private sector partnerships in ports and rail concessions must be accelerated. Companies are ready to invest in our logistics infrastructure, but they need certainty that political interference and Transnet's resistance won't undermine their investments. Next Stay Close ✕ Fixing the logistics crisis is one of the focus points of the business-government partnership. Through the National Logistics Crisis Committee there has been some progress – ports have reduced backlogs and key rail corridors have seen some volume improvements. But the fundamental issues remain and the pace of reform has slowed just when it needs to be accelerating. When business met with a senior government delegation led by President Ramaphosa in January, there was a strong commitment to accelerating reform to deliver economic growth. When the logistics workstreams fell behind on key targets, we met again in May and agreed to a focused three-month sprint to catch up. That sprint needs additional impetus. There are critical structural reforms that must be advanced, particularly enabling third party participation in rail and ports and operationalising the economic regulator that will regulate the logistics system for all. Also, as S&P makes clear, there is an urgent need to improve the operational performance of Transnet, from improving security to ensuring the availability of rolling stock, to fixing infrastructure. The plans to do all this through a partnership between the public and private sectors are in place, but either through intransigence or coordination failures, we haven't been able to implement them. The S&P decision should be a wake-up call – Transnet is going in the wrong direction and we need to act urgently. Transnet cannot continue as if it is business as usual and President Ramaphosa needs to act to get the agreed reforms implemented fast. Road Accident Fund I welcome the decisive action taken by Transport Minister Barbara Creecy in disbanding the Road Accident Fund board. This bold step represents the kind of leadership we desperately need to confront institutional dysfunction head-on. The RAF serves a critical function as our safety net against the devastating financial impact of road accidents, yet its track record of mismanagement has become a national embarrassment. With the Special Investigating Unit now conducting a broader investigation at the minister's request, we have an opportunity to root out the rot that has spawned endless litigation and operational chaos. South Africa deserves an RAF that operates with transparency, maintains clean books and delivers efficient service to those who need it most. This same no-nonsense approach must be extended to other state insurance entities that continue to fail our people. The Unemployment Insurance Fund and Compensation Fund have become synonymous with bureaucratic incompetence and public frustration. When Business Unity South Africa called for the UIF to be placed under administration late last year, it was because workers were being denied timely access to benefits they had rightfully earned. Similarly, the Compensation Fund's failure to adequately support workers suffering from occupational injuries, illnesses, or workplace fatalities represents a betrayal of our most vulnerable citizens. While Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth has initiated necessary leadership changes, these institutions remain far from delivering the world-class service standards our people deserve. Every successful reform sends a powerful signal that we are serious about creating institutions that serve with integrity, efficiency, and accountability. The private sector stands ready to support this transformation, but government must lead with the courage to make hard decisions and the commitment to see them through.
