Meta taps PIMCO, Blue Owl for $29 billion data center expansion project, source says
Aug 7 (Reuters) - Meta (META.O), opens new tab has tapped U.S. bond giant PIMCO and alternative asset manager Blue Owl Capital (OWL.N), opens new tab to spearhead a $29 billion financing for its data center expansion in rural Louisiana, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters. PIMCO will handle about $26 billion of debt, likely to be issued in the form of bonds, while Blue Owl will contribute $3 billion in equity, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Bloomberg News, which first reported the deal, said that the company has been working with Morgan Stanley (MS.N), opens new tab to raise funds, while Apollo Global Management (APO.N), opens new tab and KKR (KKR.N), opens new tab were also in the running to lead the deal until the closing stage of negotiations. Meta, PIMCO and Blue Owl declined to comment on the report. The deal comes as Meta looks for partners to help fund its AI infrastructure push. Last week, the company said in a filing that it planned to offload about $2 billion in data center assets as part of a co-development strategy to share the costs of building facilities for generative AI. In July, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the company would spend hundreds of billions of dollars to build several massive AI data centers for its superintelligence unit, intensifying his pursuit of a technology he has chased with a talent war for top engineers. Its first multi-gigawatt data center, dubbed Prometheus, is expected to come online in 2026, while another, called Hyperion, will be able to scale up to 5 GW over the coming years, Zuckerberg said in a post last month on his Threads social media platform. In June, the Financial Times reported that Meta was seeking to raise $29 billion from private capital firms to build AI data centers in the U.S., adding that the company is debating how to structure the debt raise and is also evaluating options to raise more capital.

SoftBank shares surge to record after optimism for AI prospects boosted Q1 earnings
TOKYO, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Shares in SoftBank Group (9984.T), opens new tab jumped more than 13% to a record high on Friday morning in a show of investor support for the Japanese technology investor's AI push after first quarter profit beat expectations. SoftBank's share price hit 14,205 yen at the close of morning trading. SoftBank has announced a series of mammoth investments this year, including committing $30 billion to ChatGPT maker OpenAI, as well as leading the financing for Stargate - a $500 billion data centre project in the United States. The firm beat analysts' expectations to report a net profit of 421.8 billion yen ($2.87 billion) for the April-June quarter, compared to a loss in the same period a year ago. Market enthusiasm for AI-related companies also pushed up valuations for its portfolio of listed and unlisted technology companies such that SoftBank's loan to value ratio improved to 17% at the end of June compared to 18% at the end of March. The results were "evidence of SoftBank's quality diversified portfolio, strong underlying fundamentals, thematic/secular tailwinds for its equity holdings, and the resilience of its balance sheet," Macquarie analyst Paul Golding wrote in a note. SoftBank was the biggest contributor to gains for Japan's Topix index (.TOPX), opens new tab, which rose some 1.5% to trade above the 3,000 point mark for the first time in its history. The jump will provide some relief to SoftBank investors as its shares have traded at a more than 50% discount to the value of its assets over the past five quarters. Casap, a firm using AI to automate payment disputes and tackle first party fraud, has raised $25 million in a Series A funding round led by Emergence Capital. 0 Lightspeed Venture Partners, Primary Venture Partners, and SoFi joined the round, which brings Casap's total funding to $33.5 million. Casap claims that disputes are one of the most outdated, slow, and expensive workflows in financial services. As fraud tactics evolve, teams can't keep up, leaving institutions vulnerable and consumers frustrated. First-party fraud now accounts for 30-50% of total fraud losses. The firm's AI agents are built to handle the full dispute lifecycle, from intake to chargeback filing and member communication, in one system. The platform analyses evidence, predicts outcomes, and automates key actions, such as issuing credits, filing chargebacks and responding to merchants. A proprietary fraud score identifies suspicious consumers and merchants to proactively reduce disputes. Casap says that the credit unions, banks and fintechs using its technology can see over 50% reduction in fraud losses, positive ROI in weeks and scaled case volume without additional headcount. The new funding will be used to upgrade Casap's first-party fraud scoring and AI decisioning and hiring. 'Financial institutions are under pressure to do more with less: stronger consumer retention, fewer losses, and no regulatory missteps,' says Shanthi Shanmugam, CEO, Casap. 'Casap delivers exactly that, transforming the dispute experience into a loyalty driver and a competitive advantage."
