I'm an American in the UK - here's what I found ridiculous after trying Wetherspoons for the first time

Daily Mail23-07-2025
An American tourist who visited Wetherspoons for the first time has revealed his shock over the budget boozer's 'ridiculous' menu prices.
Joel Simpson, who goes by ItsJPS on YouTube, documented his trip to the UK this month, spending the majority of his week-long break in London and Brighton.
Towards the tail end of his trip, the content creator decided to stop by Yorkshire, where he toured the scenic moors of the Yorkshire Dales and marvelled at the historic Durham Cathedral.
Accompanied by three British friends, Joel decided to seal his visit to the northern region with an obligatory meal at Wetherspoons, which he excitedly admitted he was trying out for the first time.
A video uploaded to his channel on 18 July shows the group heading into The Postern Gate, one of the chain's five York venues, before taking their seats and ordering from the menu.
The following scene shows a hearty spread of loaded chips, ten chicken wings and a pepperoni pizza, which Joel noted was all purchased for £15.
He commented: 'It's stupid cheap. It's so much food... I think we'll be able to finish this... maybe.'
The tourist added that he 'wished' the United States offered similar value-for-money meals in restaurants and politely encouraged Brits to 'be more grateful.'
Joel went on to order a series of alcoholic drinks, including four shots of AU Vodka, a pint of Stowford Press cider and a glass of pink Gordon's gin and lemonade.
He later reflected on Wetherspoons jaunt, jokingly adding that he enjoyed his 'couple of drinks' but further admitted he was blown away by their 'ridiculously cheap' prices.
In another video, Joel also captured his first Sunday dinner experience at a Toby Carvery.
Presenting to the camera his mega-packed plate of meat, potatoes and all the trimmings, he commented on the 'ridiculous' options at the pub chain.
He added: 'I've had Sunday roasts in the past, but not with this many ingredients on the plate. The plate is so damn full you don't even know what's on it. Half the plate is covered up.'
In the comments, hundreds of British viewers commended the American visitor's enthusiasm for UK pub culture.
One person wrote: 'Your passion for the pub is admirable. You are truly a Brit at heart.'
Another said: 'Joel, enjoyed this video a lot. You are honestly a little treasure. Thank you for embracing the UK so much.'
In the comments, hundreds of British viewers commended the American visitor's enthusiasm for UK pub culture.
Finally, one viewer joked: 'So glad to see that you have arrived home with a drink problem. Problem - NO Wetherspoons.'
Meanwhile an American tourist visiting the UK has admitted that British weather 'feels different' and the heat is more severe.
Content creator Kalani Ghost Hunter, real name Kalani Smith, from Tennessee, has spent months travelling around the UK in a bid to immerse himself in the culture - from sampling afternoon teas to attempting to find the best chippy.
Americans have been known to poke fun at Brits who complain about the weather with some calling them 'dramatic' and claiming they wouldn't '.

The Westbourne Park hotel and club that could rival Soho House

At first glance, the new Mason & Fifth, Westbourne Park, which overlooks the graffiti- covered Grand Union Canal and equally gritty Westway, on a site that once housed the headquarters of the London Taxi Driver's Association, has a lot of similarities with establishments such as Soho House. This cool, plant-filled, mid-century-inspired hotel and community hub is close to Notting Hill and Maida Vale, with simple, beautifully designed bedrooms, co-working spaces, artist studios, a gallery, a recording studio, DJs, live music, a pop-up retail space, bicycles to borrow, a cinema, a restaurant, a bar, a wellness centre with a pool, a listening lounge with amazing speakers, a vinyl library and talks by the likes of Norman Jay MBE. This is the group's third property; the first two, in Bermondsey and Primrose Hill, are more like boutique guest houses with bedrooms featuring kitchenettes, plus communal kitchens, drawing rooms and workspaces. But the Westbourne Park opening takes this concept to the next level, by serving as an all-singing, all-dancing community 'hub', offering more flexibility than a conventional hotel and more inclusivity than a members' club. Membership is available for Meadow, its serene and spacious dedicated workspace, which has 100 bench-style desks bookable on a flexible basis; by the day (£25), week (£100) or month (£250), plus 12 big and lockable art studios from £2,085 per month for a minimum of three months (locals have access to discounted rates). Meadow also comes with a big shared kitchen, free tea and coffee, lockers and bike storage and business services such as printing. The property is also a friendly, sensibly priced hotel, with natural wood finishes, artisan tapestries, custom-made ceramics, Moroccan pots and interesting, earthy sculptures. Of its 332 bedrooms, 300 are studios with Hypnos mattresses, clever under-bed storage, decent hanging space, desk/dining tables and fully equipped kitchenettes (with thoughtful touches including a filled olive oil dispenser and Origin coffee). These start at about £200 per night, but can drop to as little as £76 when staying for a month or more, which a surprising number of people do. My Classic Studio was perfect for me and would have been fine for two, although all beds are doubles so couples who both like to sleep star-shaped might struggle. Hotel guests also get to use a big cosy 10th-floor lounge with deep, comfy sofas, spectacular panoramic views of London, two terraces and a large kitchen and dining area, should you want to cook 'at home' but not in your room. Then there's The Grounding, a guest-only subterranean wellness floor with a 15-metre pool naturally lit through big round skylights, steam rooms with cold-water therapy bucket showers, a fully equipped gym, movement studio offering yoga, Pilates and Boxfit classes and a treatment room, where I enjoyed (through the pain) a knot-busting, 60-minute deep tissue massage. 'I didn't really know what to expect when I turned up – my daughter-in-law found it online,' said Grace Shaw, a guest from Michigan who works in pharmaceutical compliance and was staying for a month while visiting a relative. 'It's hard to be in an unfamiliar city surrounded by strangers but the set-up here is perfect for me, both as a solo traveller and a remote worker. 'If I feel like being social, I pop up to the 10th floor to cook my dinner but I've also made quite extravagant soups in my room. I'm also loving the events programme.' The ground-floor lounge and bar and a pop-up shop selling everything from ceramics to a new memoir by Jazzie B, is open to all, as is the new canal-side seasonal modern European restaurant Canal, with its sun-drenched terrace, by the people behind Crispin and Bistro Freddie. Here, I sipped icy French rosé from a reasonably priced list, feasted on a flavour-packed bream crudo with cherries and chilli, a delicate ricotta-filled agnolotti with courgettes, lemon and parmesan, and while waiting for all that, nibbled on little slices of a 'table cheeseburger' to share. Anyone can attend the various free events (I counted about 20 scheduled in July alone, ranging from interviews with musicians in the Listening Lounge – I caught a riveting Q&A with Barbados-born British dub-reggae legend Dennis Bovell the night I stayed – to kayaking on the canal) by booking a space in advance via the app. The plan is to gradually build more hubs in more cities, eventually expanding into European cities such as Berlin and Lisbon, as well as adding smaller boutique guest houses and rural outposts for urbanites wanting to move the other way. While the likes of Amazon and JP Morgan Chase have made headlines in recent months by insisting their staff return to the office full time, Mason & Fifth's unique model seems to speak to the significant numbers of people around the world for whom remote or flexible working, and the nomadic lifestyle generally, is here to stay. Francesca Syz travelled as a guest of Mason & Fifth, Westbourne Park, which has doubles from £170.

Christmas attraction tickets are ALREADY selling out – here is how you can still book

WRAP IT UP Plus, what Lapland UK is really like IT barely feels like men have been wearing shorts and yet Brits are already thinking about Christmas. As we quickly approach autumn, many families are turning their thoughts to their Christmas plans. 3 3 Tickets for many of the UK's biggest festive events are launched months in advance. And keen Christmasphiles, there is an urge to quickly jump on booking tickets. Seemingly, that is exactly what has already happened for some Christmas events. For example, Christmas at Kew will return to Kew Gardens on November 14 with new installations. Each year there is a trail that features innovative new installations as well as a festive funfair. There are three different ticket types for different entrances - and multiple dates for admission with parking have already sold out. This type of ticket is fully sold out between December 19 and 23. There are two other entrances - Kew Gardens Underground and Kew Bridge National Rail - which both have some availability in this period. So if you want to head to Kew at Christmas, close to Christmas itself, you may need to book soon or opt for a ticket from one of the public transport entrances. There are also several dates selling out fast for parking entrance tickets, notably most weekends in November. The Sun visits the Kew Gardens Orchid Festival inspired by Madagascar Tickets for the experience cost from £31 per adult and £18 per child. And it is even worse news for Lapland UK fans, as according to the experience's website it is fully sold out for this Christmas at both the Ascot and Manchester sites. There are other Christmas events that are yet to release tickets - such as Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London. And other popular Christmas events still have a lot of availability, like Hogwarts in the Snow for example. The event will run from November 15 to January 18, 2026 and costs from £56 per person. However, the extremely popular adult-only Yule Ball at the attraction is sold out. The Christmas event with dinner in the Great Hall runs on December 8, 9 and 10. The tickets usually cost £275 per person and sell out within hours of going on sale. What is LaplandUK like? THE Sun's Caroline Iggulden headed to LaplandUK last Christmas - here's what she thought… LaplandUK promises to transport children on a magical Christmas adventure without need of a plane or even flying sleigh. Nestled in Whitmoor Forest near Ascot, Berkshire, even the walk through the car park manages to be exciting with lights twinkling in the trees as you approach the cluster of Finnish-style cabins at this magical destination in the woods. It is the fine details that really set this woodland wonderland apart. From the miniature doorways, just for 'small folk' to use, to the beautifully fashioned individualised costumes worn by all the elves- and the big man himself-details are styled to perfection. And the experience of meeting Father Christmas is a far cry from a quick grip and grin at the shopping centre. It was pure joy to watch their jaws drop when Santa started congratulating them on recent achievements and quoting small details about them, thanks to an online form you fill in about each child before you go. Whilst LaplandUK is not a cheap day out, it certainly comprises many activities which would add up considerably for a family of five if you did them separately over the holidays. We enjoyed a top-notch theatre show experience, crafting, skating, a grotto visit and the children came away with two beautiful toys and a lot of amazing memories. TUI is also launching 'extreme day trips' to Lapland from 11 UK airports – including first-time regional base. Plus, one person quit their job and remortgaged their home to make the UK's own Lapland – people said it was a midlife crisis but biz is booming. 3

'They wouldn't let me into Anfield... but they did at Goodison'

This week, we are asking you to share your stories and photos about why you fell in love with is a selection of your submissions: Michael: I went to Liverpool with my family once when I was about five or six years old. We went to see both stadiums. Liverpool had their side gates open - I could see the pitch glowing green and it looked magical. I asked a groundsman if I could have a quick look in. They answered no, unfortunately. My dreams were walked over Stanley Park to Goodison. They also had their gates open. It looked amazing, the green grass, blue seats and iconic white pillars. Someone by the gate in a yellow hi-vis was on site. I asked once again if I could go in, expecting a no but God loves a trier. He replied with: "Of course, mate, just don't go on the grass!" I remember looking back at my mum as I was walking around and saying: "I want to support Everton, mum! These are nice!"Some 31 years later and we won't play again at the ground - but the memories will always live on. Send us your pictures and stories here
