PoJK: Student leader abducted, tortured before exam in Rawalakot; condition critical
Rawalakot [PoJK], May 26 (ANI): A student leader from the Jhelum Valley in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), Javed Ishaq Chauhan, was abducted from his university hostel in Rawalakot and brutally tortured before being dumped by the roadside, according to a statement by United Kashmir People's National Party (UKPNP) spokesperson Sardar Nasir Aziz Khan.
Chauhan, currently enrolled at the University of Poonch in Rawalakot, was scheduled to appear for an examination at 11 am the following day. He is now fighting for his life and undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Rawalakot. His condition is reported to be critical.
Condemning the attack, Sardar Nasir Aziz Khan said, 'Abducting a student from his hostel and subjecting him to brutal torture, especially before an exam, is not only cruel but also an alarming indicator of rising oppression in so-called Azad Kashmir.'
Chauhan had been receiving threats for his active participation in a program organised by the Action Committee, a platform known for highlighting issues faced by residents of PoJK. The abduction appears to be a targeted act to suppress student activism and political engagement in the region.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage among local students and civil society groups, who have called for justice and accountability. 'On one hand, armed extremist groups roam freely, and on the other, peaceful student leaders are abducted and tortured. This hypocrisy must end,' said Khan.
He urged the people of PoJK to rise above fear and question the actions of local authorities and their handlers. UKPNP has called for an immediate and impartial investigation into the incident and demanded that those responsible be held to account. (ANI)

NEW DELHI: Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, the face of the Indian Army during Operation Sindoor, has been promoted as the deputy chief of army staff (strategy) and will continue to hold the appointment of director general military operations (DGMO), officials aware of the matter said on Monday. Last week, President Droupadi Murmu awarded Ghai the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal for distinguished service during conflict, a recognition of his work as the commander of Srinagar-based HQ 15 Corps. Ghai, along with his air force and navy counterparts, briefed the media twice, on May 11 and 12. The understanding between India and Pakistan to cease military hostilities was announced on the evening of May 10 after Ghai and his Pakistani counterpart, Major General Kashif Abdullah, spoke over the hotline and agreed to stop all military actions against each other on land, in the air, and at sea. The two DGMOs spoke again on May 12 to uphold the truce. The confidence-building measures then discussed included continuing the May 10 commitment that both sides 'must not fire a single shot' or initiate any aggressive action against each other, and consider troop reduction in forward areas. Between the launch of the operation in the early hours of May 7 and the ceasefire on the evening of May 10, Indian forces bombed nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK and killed at least 100 terrorists. The Indian Air Force struck targets at 13 Pakistani air bases and military installations. Last week, it emerged that India's targeting of locations within Pakistan during the May 7-10 clash was more extensive than was previously known, with a Pakistani document acknowledging that Indian drones had struck locations ranging from Peshawar in the northwest to Hyderabad in the south. Pakistan's Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, which was mounted in response to Operation Sindoor, 'folded in eight hours' on May 10, belying Islamabad's ambitious target of bringing India to its knees in 48 hours, chief of defence staff General Anil Chauhan said on June 3. I will show you my bank statement for the past 3 years. You will see that every month I have paid him his entire salary on time. So, the first sentence in the FIR is false that I never paid him salary on time, that's why he fought with me. His first sentence is false. Eight Punjab and Haryana HC judges take lead to boost Kashmir tourism post Pahalgam terror attack
Srinagar: To give a moral boost to Kashmir tourism post Pahalgam terror attack, eight judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court are visiting the valley along with their families. The visit of the legal personalities along with their families carries a powerful message for the revival of tourism in Kashmir, which got shattered after the Pahalgam terror attack. On April 22, Pakistan-backed terrorists of Lashkar-e-Kashmir (LeT) killed 26 civilians, including 25 tourists and a local pony owner. The pony owner sacrificed his life while trying to protect the tourists from the bullets of the terrorists. The terror attack caused outrage in the entire country, and to avenge the killings of innocent civilians, the Indian Armed Forces carried out airstrikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan under Operation Sindoor. In retaliation for India's attack on terrorist infrastructure, Pakistan resorted to heavy mortar shelling on civilian facilities in Poonch, Rajouri, Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora districts. Eighteen civilians were killed in Pakistan shelling, 13 of them in Poonch district, in addition to the destruction of scores of homes, shops, a temple, a mosque, a church and a Gurudwara. The itinerary of the visiting high court judges includes visits to the Mughal Gardens of Nishat and Shalimar, Shikara rides on the Dal Lake, a visit to the historic Pari Mahal and buying a few handicrafts at the local market. There could be no better omen for the revival of tourism in Kashmir than the decision of the honourable justices of the High Court to come here along with their families. Coinciding with the visit of these dignitaries, local tour and travel operators and hotel owners are reporting a gradual rise in the tourist bookings that had virtually stopped after the Pahalgam terror attack. Tour and travel operators and others connected with the tourist industry have expressed hope that the visit by the most respected legal dignitaries, like the high court judges, will restore confidence among visitors, both domestic and foreign, that Kashmir is a safe tourist destination.
