Japanese raider Prognosis, second in 2024 Cox Plate, retired to stud

News.com.au29-07-2025
Star galloper Prognosis has run his last race and is set to be retired to stud.
The Japanese galloper, who beat all but Via Sistina in last year's Cox Plate, injured a sesamoid ligament while preparing for a return to racing.
'After finishing second in the Hong Kong G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup in April, he had been ridden in preparation for his comeback, but swelling was observed in his right front leg and examination revealed inflammation in the sesamoid ligament,' a statement read.
'After considering the need for a long period of rest and the risk of recurrence, the decision was made to retire him. Discussions are underway with the aim of him becoming a breeding stallion in the future.'

While never saluting at Group 1 level, the son of legendary stallion Deep Impact went close in some big races with placings behind the likes of Romantic Warrior and Equinox.
His trainer Mitsumasa Nakauchida is certain Prognosis has a bright future in the next stage of his career.
'He came in second in his last race (Queen Elizabeth II Cup) and has always performed well no matter where he was,' Nakauchida said.
'I think he has done really well up until now. He will become a breeding stallion in the future and I believe he will pass on his strengths to his offspring.'

James McDonald says Hong Kong sprinter Ka Ying Rising is beatable in The Everest

Hong Kong's freakish Ka Ying Rising is an exceptional talent, a deserved The Everest favourite – but he's not unbeatable. This is the view of champion jockey James McDonald who has ridden against Ka Ying Rising enough times to know better than most what the sprinter is capable of. 'Ka Ying Rising is unbelievable,'' McDonald said. 'He toys with the opposition up there but it is a small pool. 'He still has to travel to Sydney and then handle Randwick. He has only had to race over a pretty fast, flat track at Sha Tin. 'So, there are some obstacles but he's very good and deserves to be favourite for The Everest, for sure.'' Ka Ying Rising, the world's No.1-ranked sprinter, winner of 13 of his 15 starts, is already the $1.80 favourite with TAB for the $20m The TAB Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick on October 18. Trainer David Hayes is likely to give Ka Ying Rising a comeback run at Sha Tin early next month to prepare for The Everest. But The Everest will be Ka Ying Rising's only Sydney start, with Hayes ruling out keeping the super sprinter here for the Russell Balding Stakes in early November. Hayes said Ka Ying Rising's owner is committed to Hong Kong racing and wants his sprinter to be at his best to defend his title in the Hong Kong International Sprint at Sha Tin in December. It's too early for McDonald to lock in his Everest ride but he has the likes of Joliestar, Sunshine In Paris and Lady Shenandoah to consider. McDonald also provided an update on Hong Kong's other great champion Romantic Warrior who has recovered well from fetlock surgery after successive narrow defeats in the Saudi Cup and Dubai Turf earlier this year. 'Romantic Warrior is well ahead of schedule, he looks phenomenal in terms of his condition,'' McDonald. 'I'm not saying he can be better but he's really well and I am hearing if 'Romantic' goes well in the Hong Kong (International) Cup in December then they have ambitions of going back to the Saudi Cup with him next year.'' Romantic Warrior, who won the 2023 Cox Plate, is aiming for an unprecedented fourth successive Hong Kong International Cup at Sha Tin in December.

'You might see us head towards the Group 1 Manikato Stakes and then potentially head to Sydney for the Sydney Stakes which is on Everest day,' Gollan said. 'Or we might even look to get him out to 1400m. 'I've got plenty of options with him, but I do want to try him again at Group 1 level at some stage during the spring.' TRANSATLANTIC Gollan has openly said for the last 12 months that Transatlantic has the capability to follow a similar trajectory as two-time Group 1 winning star Antino. Transatlantic didn't finish near them in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap when sneaking into the field but Gollan insists he is a proper horse. 'I'm pretty keen for him to do a pretty similar preparation to Antino in 2023, head towards a Toorak Handicap and then possibly finish in the $2m Five Diamonds in Sydney,' Gollan said. 'This horse has excited me for a while. 'I think a mile is probably his go and possibly further.' • Stable switch: Exciting Queensland filly bound for Victoria GOLDEN BOOM The sharp sprinter who has banked more than $1m in prizemoney had one run in Melbourne last spring when finishing runner-up to Mornington Glory in the Listed Carlyon Stakes at The Valley. He was well beaten in the Jimmysstar's Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield in February and hasn't been at the races since, but brained them in a Deagon trial earlier this week. 'He will head to the same race he was in last year, the Carlyon, and then hopefully go to the Group 1 Moir Stakes,' Gollan said. 'Whereas last year I just went to the one race in Melbourne for him, because he was coming off a winter preparation. 'This year we are fresh into a spring carnival preparation. 'After the Moir there are more options for him if he is going well.' • 'She is so humble': Proud mum revels in daughter's premiership feat FREEDOM RALLY Gollan has given this $1m earner three attempts at Group 1 level and he has been unplaced at each. However, he is keen to try something different this spring. 'We want to try to get him out to 2000m this preparation,' Gollan said. 'Whether that be in Melbourne or in Sydney, I don't really have a grand Group 1 goal for him. 'I probably just want to try to get him out in trip, under the top level. 'He will go to Melbourne in the first instance and his first two runs will be there.' • Bookmaker reveals biggest winners and losers in 2024-25 FLOOZIE The mare was one of the finds of the winter carnival, turning into a winning machine for Gollan after heading north from Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr who trained her in Victoria. She looked the one to beat in the Group 1 Tatt's Tiara, but finished fifth after looking like she had come to the end of her preparation. 'Later in the spring, you will see this mare head down to Sydney,' Gollan said. 'She will have two to three runs before she has a break with next year's winter carnival in mind. 'There are a few good options for her in Sydney, including The Invitation ($2m race for fillies and mares).'
