UK tax authority warns of fake social media posts
The video has been circulated widely in the Middle East, causing alarm among British nationals overseas and UK residents.
It claims that from August 4, a new branch of HMRC and the Home Office – called the Mobility Oversight Unit – will check whether a person's employment status and tax record match their lifestyle.
This is part of an 'enhanced customs monitoring' programme to tackle benefit fraud and tax evasion, the video and other related social media posts claim.
HMRC said the information contained in the video was false. 'This video is disinformation, designed to cause undue alarm and fear. Anyone wanting information on rules around taxation should go to gov.uk or seek advice from a tax professional,' an HMRC spokesperson said.
Many social media users commented under the video that the information was false, but that did not stop it being widely shared.
Fact-checking charity Full Fact traced the video back to a TikTok account, where the post had been shared more than 66,000 times and liked by 57,200 accounts.
The video claimed the information was first reported by The Guardian, but there was no evidence of this on the newspaper's website.
Full Fact added that while there are existing restrictions on the length of travel for people claiming benefits, the system in described in the video does not exist.
The Home Office was contacted for comment.
British government departments are being targeted with misinformation. One widely shared post on social media says 'the UK government is hiring' for a 'Shariah law administrator'.
A separate post claimed 'the role is for the Department of Work and Pensions' alongside a screenshot of a – now deleted – listing for Manchester Community Centre.
The job description says the successful candidate will 'provide all admin and secretarial work for Manchester Shariah Council'.
In fact, the advert was not for a government job and the administrator was being hired using money a mosque said it had raised through donations.
The job was advertised on a portal run by the government, where private employers can post.
It is not known whether any of the posts are part of a hostile state-backed cyber campaign. UK government bodies have repeatedly warned of threats from online and phishing operations by actors in Russia and Iran.
Earlier this year the UK's National Cyber Security Centre exposed a cyber campaign by military unit 26165 of Russia's GRU intelligence directorate against western logistics providers and technology companies that had been running since 2022.

Huge police operation in London to deal with weekend of pro-Palestine demos
London is bracing itself for a weekend of pro-Palestinian protests as well as demonstrations against migrants being housed in hotels in the city. The Met Police is warning of a busy period of simultaneous protests and events requiring a significant policing presence. They will include a protest where demonstrators intend to intentionally break the law by declaring support for Palestine Action, which has been proscribed as a terrorist group by the UK government. The organisation is currently mounting a legal challenge to that decision. Extra officers have been deployed from Friday afternoon near hotels accommodating migrants in Islington in the north of the city and in Canary Wharf in the east, in anticipation of a possible protest and counter protest. Officers will be present until Sunday afternoon. Officers will also be policing local protests in opposition to continued Israeli military action in Gaza, in Tower Hamlets, Putney and Westminster. On Saturday the regular march through the centre of London will take place, organised by the Palestine Coalition, made up of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Stop the War and other groups. This Saturday's route will be from Russell Square to Whitehall, where there will be speeches. The Met Police says another protest is also expected on Saturday in Parliament Square, organised by Defend Our Juries. Demonstrators are expected to intentionally break the law by holding up placards expressing support for Palestine Action. A total of more than 100 people have been arrested at previous such protests. Supporters suggested this week that police were shying away from prosecutions after no one was charged. However three people were then charged on Thursday. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, who will lead the policing operation, said: 'What sets this protest apart from others is participants are coming out not just to express a view, but with the aim of being arrested in very large numbers to place a strain on the police and the wider criminal justice system.' He warned: 'Anyone showing support for Palestine Action can expect to be arrested.' Sunday afternoon will see a National March for the Hostages in central London organised by Stop the Hate and a number of Jewish organisations. There will be a policing and security operation in place to ensure the safety of participants, the Met said. The FA Community Shield match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace will take place at Wembley on Sunday. The Met said police will be deployed to central London where Crystal Palace fans are expected to gather before the match.

Reliance likely to switch back to Middle East oil if Russian supply dries up
Reliance Industries is likely to shift back to its traditional Middle Eastern sources for oil if India yields to pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to cut Russian imports, trade sources said. India became the biggest buyer of seaborne Russian crude in the aftermath of Moscow's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and is under heavy pressure from Washington to cut its energy ties with Russia. India's biggest buyer, Reliance, operates the world's largest refining complex at Jamnagar in Gujarat where it can process about 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd). "If Reliance stops buying Russian crude, they will most likely turn to Middle Eastern suppliers due to geographic proximity. The good news is that OPEC is increasing crude output as part of its plan to unwind voluntary cuts," said Anh Pham, a senior analyst at LSEG. "Any hit to Russian supplies will increase their participation (in the spot market) and that would tighten spot market and raise prices. They are a giant player," said Tushar Tarun Bansal, senior director at oil consultancy Alvarez and Marsal. "They have to take more of Middle Eastern grades, mainly from Saudi Arabia and UAE. Also, they would look at buying more from Latin America such as Brazil. At times (in the past) they also bought some of the North Sea stream, they could also go back to them," Bansal said. Reliance did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comments. "Reliance has the flexibility and trading know-how to revert to pre-Ukraine war procurement, so they may agree to change sourcing," said Harry Tchilinguirian, group head of research at Onyx Capital Group. Indian state refiners paused Russian purchases in late July, Reuters reported, though Reliance continues to buy under a 500,000 bpd deal signed with Russia's Rosneft last year. The port of Sikka in western India, which handles Reliance imports, is scheduled to receive 22 cargoes from Russia this month, LSEG data shows. The state refiners were responding to threatened tariffs from Trump. On Wednesday the United States imposed an additional 25% tariff on imports from India, citing its continued purchases of Russian oil. That was to take effect in 21 days and would raise duties on some Indian imports to as high as 50%. It has defended its purchases from Russia, which accounted for 35% of its supply in the first half of 2025, on economic grounds, and criticised the U.S. and the European Union for singling out New Delhi. Reliance, which is controlled by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, said in its annual report on Thursday that political and tariff-related uncertainties could hurt trade flows and the demand-supply balance.
