'There has to be a step up' - Sheehan looks to go to next level with Lions

The 422 days ago
THIS HAS ALREADY been an impressive season for Dan Sheehan, even though he missed the first half of it.
His comeback from an ACL injury has been outstanding, with the Leinster and Ireland hooker hitting the ground running. He hasn't slowed up since.
With 14 tries in 14 appearances for province and country, as well as all of his class and power around the pitch, Sheehan has reestablished his position as one of the game's leading hookers.
A Lions series is one of the best places to copper-fasten that status, even if Sheehan and his team-mates insist it's all about the collective. Sheehan will look to take his game to the next level and so will everyone else on Andy Farrell's Lions team.
'We've talked about it, there has to be a step up,' said Sheehan this week in Brisbane.
'What we've done so far has been great and I think we've done a good job doing it. But we talked about, there has to be a visible difference this week and this is why we're here.

'I think we should be able to feel the energy off people. You should be able to see the collisions, the carries. I think everything is just going to be up a level.
'With that, you have to somehow bring the accuracy with you which can be the tricky part when you get psyched up for a game of this intensity. It's trying to bring the accuracy which we've struggled at times over the last couple of games. That will be crucial. Bringing both accuracy and physicality.'
Farrell's Lions team are all about changing the recent record of the touring side. The last series that the Lions won was in 2013, their last visit to Australia.

So all this group is worried about is leaving with a series victory.
'A win,' said Sheehan when asked what legacy they want to leave.
'It would be a good story and a good legacy to have a winning series. We haven't delved too much into the wider picture. We did at the start when we were trying to frame the mindset, but this week has been all about Saturday, and how our prep goes into winning this game on Saturday, and we're going to throw everything at that.
'There's going to be no holding anything back, or waiting for the next two Tests. It's all about Saturday.
'I think we're in a good spot. Lads are hungry, and we're expecting the Wallabies to be hungry. I think it'll be a good Test and fireworks on Saturday.'
And Sheehan said the Lions are convinced that winning is the only true way they can repay their travelling support in Australia.
'Performance is the way to do that. Yeah, we can give them a cheer and a clap after the game but ultimately that's not what they came for, they came for a good game of rugby,' said the Irish hooker.
'If we do that, they'll feel part of it. That's a goal of ours, to make sure if we have a big crowd on Saturday which we probably will, that we bring them into the game and make it feel almost like a 50/50 game that could be anywhere in the world.
'But I still think it's down to what we put out on the pitch, that's how you get the crowd in behind you.'

Schmidt hopes Wallabies side will keep the Lions 'honest' in opening Test clash

Did Joe Schmidt really say he hoped his Australia side would 'at least keep the Lions honest'? While the Australian rugby public do not seem to have a complete handle on their Wallabies head coach, seasoned Joe watchers in Ireland will know that the disrespectful moniker 'Sleepy Joe' handed to him by an Aussie headline writer could not be further from the truth. Australia may be underdogs in this upcoming three Test series with the British & Irish Lions, starting at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, but whatever about the quality of the players at his disposal, the Wallabies' secret weapon is undoubtedly Schmidt himself. Even more so now that he has lost three of his key frontline players to injury in fly-half Noah Lolesio, lock Will Skelton and flanker Rob 'Bobby V' Valentini. Schmidt named his team on Thursday for the first Test against the British & Irish Lions, bad luck forcing him to hand a first start at number 10 to 22-year-old playmaker Tom Lynagh, son of Australian great Michael Lynagh in just his fourth Test and award an international debut to flanker Nick Champion de Crespigny. Was he rattled? Of course not. Here was a man who took down the All Blacks in Chicago in 2016, won a series against a much better Wallabies side than he is in charge of currently two years later and then as New Zealand attack coach unpicked the Irish with some choice starter plays in a World Cup quarter-final two years ago. 'I'd be pretty pragmatic about that (underdog tag) and I'd hope that the team are as well,' he said on Thursday. 'We try not to base our whole game around any individual that we share the load. We share the excitement of the opportunity and I think those things are still shared across the group, and they're excited about the opportunity. I'd like to think that we can still go out, probably sharing Tom Lynagh's quiet confidence that we can put a game together that at least can keep the British and Irish Lions pretty honest on the day.' Irish Examiner rugby columnist Donal Lenihan joins Simon Lewis in Australia to discuss Andy Farrell's team selection and look ahead to the first Test with the Wallabies. If Schmidt can convince the Lions his ambition is to keep Andy Farrell's team 'pretty honest' at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday then the tourists are walking into one hell of an ambush. But of course Farrell and a Lions coaching ticket including defence coach Simon Easterby, attack coach Andrew Goodman and kicking coach Johnny Sexton knows Schmidt's coaching style only too well. Which makes this series all the more intriguing. Schmidt was asked how hard it was to stay a step in front of the opposition whena rival coaching staff knew him so well. 'I'm not sure I ever got ahead in the first place,' he said. 'I've got massive respect for those guys. They're a super coaching crew. 'Andrew Goodman, I brought him across to Leinster and he already had a really good head for the game. Simon Easterby I worked with for so long, Faz obviously. Even in terms of analytics, Vinnie Hammond, he's a superb analyst. I've no doubt he's analysed anything that we've done so far. 'Across the board, they've got a great coaching crew. I had a really good chat with Richard Wigglesworth, who I've never worked with after we played England last year. Again, he just seemed to have a really good handle on the game and unpicked us pretty well. 'I've no doubt that they will have their players really well prepared - and that's part of the challenge. What I can't control, I wouldn't try to overly focus on. 'I think for us, we've had one Test match, we've got 15 this year. We go from the Lions test, six days later we leave to play a test on the Highveld in Joburg. We thought we'd ease our way into the year – and that's the magnitude of it really. I'm looking forward to seeing those guys and catching up with them.' With Schmidt involved one wonders who is going to buy the drinks when the dust settles on this Test series.

Lions v Wallabies: First Test winners and losers

WINNERS Tom Curry Congratulations to Curry who has held off the claims of Jac Morgan, Henry Pollock and Josh van der Flier to wear the number seven jersey at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday. Both Morgan and van Flier have spent more time in that jersey in the preceding tour games with Curry having had just one start at openside flanker. He also has inferior tackle stats to Morgan and van der Flier and has turnover Lions ball more times than his rivals, making almost 50 per cent fewer metres from the same number of carries as Wales's Morgan. Yet Curry is a proven Lions Test starter who started at seven in all three Tests against South Africa four years ago. Sione Tuipulotu Scotland's captain may well have started this opening Test at inside centre alongside compatriot Huw Jones regardless, but Garry Ringrose's concussion against the Brumbies nine days ago brought an end to hopes of an all-Irish midfield pairing. Tuipulotu has not been pulling up trees so far on this tour and positional rival Bundee Aki has performed better but the Australian-born 12 appears to have benefitted from the desire to play an established pairing rather than mix and match. Hugo Keenan Keenan's selection at full-back caps a remarkable rebound from a nightmarish start to his first Lions tour. Arriving in Australia injured, the Ireland back then contracted a virus that left him reeling for 12 days. He still had the bug when he made his Lions debut against the Waratahs a fortnight ago and his poor performance in Sydney might have ended his Test hopes there and then. Yet Keenan has been nothing if not resilient and he grabbed his second chance, aided by injury to Blair Kinghorn, with both hands with an impressive display last Saturday in Adelaide against an AUSNZ Invitational XV. LOSERS Jac Morgan A nation weeps with Morgan's omission from the Lions matchday 23, as Wales fail to provide a Test player to the famous touring side for the first time since 1896. There is some justification for Welsh frustration given his productivity at openside flanker in three tour games. Josh van der Flier You could say the same for van der Flier as was mentioned about Morgan, as the 2022 World Rugby Player of the Year gets ready to watch the first Test at Suncorp Stadium from the stands. Both men seem to have lost out to more powerful back-row rivals, with Tom Curry starting at openside flanker, backed up by fellow Englishman Ben Earl, whose versatility across the back row and as an auxiliary centre make him an ideal bench replacement. Yet having started 50 of the 56 Ireland Tests under Andy Farrell's watch, this omission will sting. Bundee Aki The Connacht and Ireland centre has the solace of a place on the bench as the outside backs replacement alongside Marcus Smith, who can cover 10 and 15, but Aki's candidacy for the number 12 jersey was possibly compromised when his Irish midfield partner Garry Ringrose was concussed against the Brumbies in Canberra nine days ago and stood down for 12 days.
