HAWANA 2025: Bernama's Fact-check Booth Raises Public Awareness On Misinformation

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- An interactive fact-checking exhibition by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) at the HAWANA 2025 Carnival aims to educate the public on how to identify and verify questionable content, particularly on social media.
The initiative is led by MyCheck Malaysia, Bernama's dedicated fact-checking unit, as part of the annual National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) celebration which starts today.
Unit head Fatin Najmi Mohammad Shah said the booth introduces Bernama's verification efforts and promotes critical thinking among media users.
'The goal is to help people quickly spot dubious claims and assess their authenticity before sharing them,' she told Bernama at the event held at Sunway Putra Mall here today.
She added that while platforms like MyCheck Malaysia are useful, individuals should also learn to conduct their own checks.
Visitors to the booth can take part in quizzes, interactive games and watch live sessions by MyCheck Malaysia on Bernama Radio.
A 'Pocket Talk' session scheduled for Sunday will highlight the importance of media literacy and fact-checking in today's digital landscape.
Visitor Nurjannah Najiah, 20, said the exhibition helped her better understand how to assess information credibility and appreciate the work that goes into verifying news.
'We've heard of Bernama, but I didn't know what it actually offers. Today, I learned that it has a fact-checking unit like MyCheck Malaysia,' said Nurjannah, a Diploma in Corporate Communication student at Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM).

King Charles Honours Air India Crash Victims at Trooping The Colour

Britain's King Charles and Queen Camilla ride a carriage as part of the Trooping the Colour parade which honours King Charles on his official birthday, in London, Britain, June 14, 2025. REUTERS/Isabel Infantes LONDON, June 14 (Bernama-PA Media/dpa) -- Britain's King Charles III wore a black armband in tribute to those killed in the Air India plane crash as the Trooping the Colour ceremony staged in his honour began. Charles' official birthday, reported PA Media/dpa news, was marked with a display of military pomp and pageantry but at the king's request the event acknowledged the aviation disaster that claimed the lives of 241 passengers and crew, including more than 50 British nationals, as well as around 30 people on the ground. The head of state and his wife left Buckingham Palace in a carriage at the head of a procession travelling along The Mall and into Horse Guards Parade where hundreds of guardsmen were on parade. bootstrap slideshow The appearance of the Prince and Princess of Wales' children sparked cheers when they were spotted in a carriage with their mother, Kate. Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis followed the King and Queen, with other coaches carrying the Duchess of Edinburgh, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. Riding behind Charles were the royal colonels, all wearing black armbands – the Prince of Wales, Colonel of the Welsh Guards; the Princess Royal, Colonel of the Blues and Royals; and the Duke of Edinburgh, Colonel of the Scots Guards. The royal procession was accompanied by the Sovereign's Escort of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, to the sound of the Band of the Household Cavalry, led by two shire drum horses bearing solid silver kettle drums. Senior officers taking part in Trooping also wore black arm bands as a mark of respect for the aviation victims, as did the coachmen and women from the Royal Mews, driving carriages carrying members of the royal family or riding on a coach's lead horse as a postilion. A minute's silence will be observed after the king has inspected the guardsmen on the parade ground. It will be signalled by a bugler sounding the Last Post and will end with the Reveille.

Son Reflects On Rozaid's Unwavering Dedication To Journalism

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) --The son of Rozaid Abdul Rahman, a respected journalist posthumously honoured with the Special Award at the 2025 National Journalists' Day (HAWANA), said his late father would never compromise on his principles or the quality of his work, always ensuring that he completed every assignment before going home. Roz Ariffin, 34, Rozaid's eldest son, told Bernama this after accepting the award from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, describing the recognition as a great honour for the family. "My family and I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the HAWANA organisers for this meaningful recognition. Honestly, I feel an overwhelming sadness as it should have been my late father standing here to receive this award himself," he said at the 2025 HAWANA celebration main event at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) today. Rozaid, who passed away on Aug 18, 2024, from a heart attack at the age of 59, is regarded as a towering figure in Malaysian journalism, with a career spanning over four decades. Born in Nibong Tebal, Penang, on Oct 1, 1964, Rozaid began his career as a cadet reporter with Utusan Melayu on April 21, 1984. He later rose to the position of chief reporter and, at the age of 27, made history as the youngest individual to be appointed as news editor of Kumpulan Utusan. Roz Ariffin, a part-time editor at a local media company, said his father consistently set an example for the family that hard work would always bring lasting rewards. That unwavering dedication, he said, was evident throughout his life. "Even while unwell, he continued to ask about daily assignments and work developments at the office. He kept up with current affairs and never neglected his responsibilities. "..In the two months leading up to his passing, he tired easily and lacked energy, yet even in that condition, he never once abandoned his duties. That has been a source of inspiration for all of us," he said.
