UFC on ESPN 69: Alonzo Menifield post-fight interview
UFC on ESPN 69 winner Alonzo Menifield talks to MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight after his decision victory over Oumar Sy in Atlanta.
ATLANTA – Alonzo Menifield came through as a massive underdog on the UFC on ESPN 69 main card, but wishes he didn't have to endure a few more eye pokes.
Few gave Menifield (17-5-1 MMA, 10-5-1 UFC) a chance to win the main card light heavyweight fight at State Farm Arena against Oumar Sy, who came into the bout undefeated. The hard-hitting Menifield pulled off the victory on the scorecards to hand Sy (11-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) his first career loss.
During the fight, Menifield received a few eye pokes, which caused visible damage. For whatever reason, this frequently happens to Menifield.
"If affects me because I'm telling you, every fight I'm in, I'm seeing multiple people," Menifield told reporters at a post-fight news conference. "And it's like, sometimes it's a knuckle, and I'm like, 'Alright, it probably was a knuckle.' But when it's clear, it's clear. I'm yelling to you, 'finger.' Yeah, it's a problem because he's doing it more than once. That's why I started protesting. But I gamed through it, got the W, so it is what it is."
Menifield told referee Blake Grice repeatedly that Sy had his fingers in his eye, but he managed to work through the fouls to get the victory and make it back-to-back wins. If Menifield gets his wish next, he wants to run it back with Azamat Murzakanov, the man who handed him his most recent loss last August.

UFC's Rodolfo Bellato issues statement on 'actor' accusations after appearing to flop

Rodolfo Bellato takes umbrage with the notion that he wanted out of his fight with Paul Craig at UFC on ESPN 69. This past Saturday's light heavyweight bout between Bellato (12-2-1 MMA, 1-0-1 UFC) and Paul Craig (17-9-1 MMA, 9-9-1 UFC) was ruled a no contest after Bellato was illegally upkicked with just one second remaining in Round 1. As soon as he was struck, Bellato complained to referee Kevin MacDonald, then fell back to the canvas as he appeared knocked out. He immediately regained consciousness and tried to wrestle MacDonald, which had many people – including the ESPN broadcast team – accusing him of milking the extent of the damage. Advertisement Well aware of the criticism, Bellato released a statement on Instagram. "I saw some things on the internet, saying I was an actor there and stuff," Bellato wrote. ".. the moment i was on the ground, i didn't expect to get kicked in the face (illegally).. it was a strong kick, when I looked at the judge to complain, my whole body began to tingle and my vision disappeared.. after that i dont remember anything "Anyone who's known me the longest knows I would NEVER do this, I've never run from war. I hit 2x in less than 30 days, 2 trips in a row. Why would I fake something after all I been through and on top of that winning the first round?" Craig refused to accuse Bellato of quitting and took full responsibility for throwing the illegal upkick that caused the fight-ending sequence. More welterweight bout during the UFC Fight Night event at State Farm Arena on June 14, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC) Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman ended a three-fight losing skid on Saturday night in the main event of the UFC Atlanta card, cruising to an upset decision win over the younger and favored Joaquin Buckley. The win was Usman's first victory since his final defense of the UFC 170-pound crown in November 2021. Usman's route to victory was to avoid Buckley's heavy hands, score takedowns, and rack up ground control with his heavy top game. Usman picked up one takedown in each of the first four rounds, which was all he needed. Once he had Buckley on his back, Usman kept him on the mat for the rest of the round, picking up 12:26 of control time over the first 20 minutes of the fight. Usman did not get a takedown in the fifth stanza, but he did not need it, as he was ahead on all three scorecards heading into the fifth. It will be interesting to see how the UFC books the 38-year-old Usman after his dominant performance on Saturday night. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 14: Rose Namajunas reacts after finishing three rounds against Miranda ... More Maverick in a women's flyweight bout during the UFC Fight Night event at State Farm Arena on June 14, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC) Rose Namajunas fought a smart three-round battle against Miranda Maverick in Atlanta. Her striking was on point, and her top game was hard for Maverick to deal with. The win won't answer questions about Namajunas's ability to compete with the top women in the 125-pound division, but she'll at least hold on to her No. 7 ranking in the division. The next fight card on the UFC schedule is the UFC Baku event, which takes place on Saturday, June 21.
