Chilliwack, B.C., man found not criminally responsible for wife's stabbing death
The court ruling posted online Wednesday says Joseph Berkiw, now 70, killed his wife, who can't be named under a publication ban, while believing he was 'saving her' from being tortured or raped by people who were targeting the couple.
It says Berkiw worked as a machinist and had become 'preoccupied' with concerns about not getting paid from his job, and began acting in unusual and paranoid ways in the lead-up to the killing.
The ruling says the couple lived with their adult son, who had called police over his father's 'bizarre behaviour' on Jan. 8 and Jan. 12, 2024, but officers determined he didn't meet the criteria to be apprehended 'under the Mental Health Act because nobody indicated he presented an immediate risk to himself or anyone else.'
The court ruling says Berkiw attacked his wife with a knife on Jan. 17, stabbing her before being taken to the ground by his son, and she called police in 'extreme distress,' telling the call-taker that her husband was mentally ill and 'trying to kill everybody.'

The ruling says Berkiw broke free of his son's grasp and got another knife, slashing his wife's throat and cutting his son, who had tried to protect her, and the court found he was suffering from a mental disorder that included 'delusional beliefs' that rendered him 'incapable of knowing that his actions were morally wrong.'

Woman charged after police allege she was driving in wrong lanes in fatal crash
EDMONTON – A driver in Edmonton has died after his car slammed into a light pole, which police allege was caused by an impaired driver going the wrong way. The Edmonton Police Service says its officers were dispatched early Saturday to the city's southeast, where a Chevrolet Cruze reportedly struck a light standard along the southbound portion of Anthony Henday Drive and caught fire. Police say witnesses pulled the 23-year-old male driver from the car and attempted lifesaving measures, but he died at the scene. Investigators later got reports that another vehicle, which police say they believe caused the collision, had been seen travelling north in the southbound lanes of the arterial highway. The 23-year-old woman at the wheel of the Cavalier was arrested and is facing charges of dangerous driving causing death and impaired driving. Montreal police investigate assault of Jewish father caught in part on video
MONTREAL – Montreal police are investigating after a Jewish father was attacked in the city's Villeray—Saint-Michel—Parc-Extension borough on Friday afternoon, caught partly on video by a bystander. Police say no arrests have been made as the 32-year-old man who was with his three children was struck several times by a suspect around 2:45 p.m. The alleged assault was first reported by the Journal de Montréal, which released a video showing a man being beaten by another man, alongside young children. Const. Manuel Couture says the reasons behind the assault are not known and the injuries suffered by the victim are deemed non-life-threatening. Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante says in a social media post that she was troubled by the 'violent and unacceptable attack' and says Montreal police will get to the bottom of the incident. Federal Health Minister Marjorie Michel, who represents the Papineau riding in the House of Commons where the attack took place, said on X she strongly condemns the 'unprovoked assault of a Jewish father, attacked in front of his children.' Christopher Skeete, Quebec's minister responsible for the fight against racism, also took to X, noting the hatred on display must stop. 'I am deeply disturbed by this video showing a member of the Jewish community being attacked for no reason in front of his child, whose cries can be heard,' Skeete said. Iran International network says two journalists working in Canada targeted by regime
OTTAWA – Two journalists working for Iran International in Canada are among dozens who have been targeted by regime officials in recent weeks, the network says. Iran International is a prominent online broadcaster that covers news in Iran and its diaspora, including anti-government protests that advocates say are censored within Iran. Network spokesman Adam Baillie says Canadian law enforcement officials have instructed one journalist to take security precautions after receiving messages implying that he could be kidnapped and taken outside of Canada.
