‘Moon Man', Gandhi kin among Opposition V-P picks, decision today
'A meeting of leaders of all Opposition parties in Parliament will be held at 12:30 PM Tuesday, Aug 19, at 10, Rajaji Marg,' wrote Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on X.
Sources said that the names that came up in the meeting included former ISRO scientist M Annadurai, who is known as the 'Moon Man of India' and is a Padma Shri awardee, as well as Tushar Gandhi, great-great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. The Opposition's candidate will be vying with the NDA's pick, Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan.
The sources said that senior DMK leaders have proposed the name of Annadurai, who hails from Tamil Nadu, for the vice president's post.
The name of senior DMK leader Tiruchi Siva is also doing the rounds, but discussions have yet to be held with other opposition leaders. Siva, however, refused to comment, saying his leadership will take a call on the issue.
NDA nominee Radhakrishnan hails from Tamil Nadu, which will go to the polls in 2026.

Amid the furore over senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 'vote chori' allegations against the Election Commission, Tejashwi Yadav, leader of its key ally Rashtriya Janata Dal, exhorted the people of Bihar to make the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha the next Prime Minister of the country. Yadav made the remarks during the third day of Congress' 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' in Nawada. Posing a striking challenge for the Centre, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar urged the youth to 'root out the NDA' in the Assembly polls scheduled later this year and compared their governance to a rickety old car ('khatara'). 'In the upcoming Assembly polls, we shall root out the NDA, which has been running a government comparable to a rickety old car ('khatara') for the last 20 years. And in the next Lok Sabha polls, we shall make Rahul Gandhi the Prime Minister,' said Yadav, triggering applause from the crowd. Yadav, who was accompanied by Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders, termed the Rae Bareli MP as the one 'who has given sleepless nights to Prime Minister Narendra Modi' by holding the state-wide yatra. The march, which began in Sasaram on Sunday, has been held amid intensified protests against the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. Ahead of the march, Gandhi slammed the EC, alleging that its 'latest conspiracy' was to 'steal the election in Bihar through the SIR of electoral rolls.' In a counterpoint, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar asked the 55-year-old leader to either submit his allegations in a sworn affidavit within a week or apologise to the nation. Firing another salvo at the BJP, Yadav said, 'They have colluded with the Election Commission to deprive the people of Bihar of their right to vote.' Many people who are alive, who had voted in the last Lok Sabha polls, have been declared dead and their names are being deleted from the electoral rolls, he claimed. Continuing his vehement opposition against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Yadav termed it an exercise to 'snatch' people's right to vote. 'The SIR is dacoity of votes and we will not allow that to happen. It's a conspiracy of the ruling dispensation to disenfranchise voters in Bihar,' the 35-year-old leader alleged. 'The BJP and the EC think they can take the people of Bihar for a ride. But they need to know that in Bihar, we mix lime with khaini (raw tobacco) and swallow it without a fuss. We are Biharis. And as the saying goes, a Bihari can take on anybody,' the RJD leader said. The yatra, which will also pass through Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Munger, Bhagalpur, Katihar, Purnea, Araria, Supaul, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, East Champaran, West Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Chhapra, and Ara, is scheduled to conclude with a rally in Patna on September 1.

Radhakrishnan meets NDA MPs at Parliamentary Party meet, PM seeks support for him
NDA Vice-Presidential nominee C P Radhakrishnan met the ruling alliance's MPs during its Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed his public life and appealed for consensus, including from the Opposition, on his candidature. Later in the day, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge announced former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy as the joint Opposition candidate. Modi introduced the Maharashtra governor, a seasoned BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, to the NDA MPs, talking about his long public life in which he served in different capacities. NDA MPs congratulated Radhakrishan, who will likely file his nomination Wednesday, and presented him with bouquets and shawls. While Union minister Kiren Rijiju conducted the meeting, which lasted for about an hour, PM Modi addressed the delegates. After the meeting, Rijiju said: 'The NDA candidate for the Vice Presidential election, C P Radhakrishnan, was introduced in the meeting. The floor leaders, MPs of the NDA, warmly welcomed CP Radhakrishnan ji, congratulated him and thanked the Prime Minister. His introduction was given by Prime Minister Modi in the meeting of the NDA Parliamentary Party. Along with the introduction, Prime Minister Modi has appealed that the entire party and all the MPs of the parties should come together and unanimously support the candidate decided by the NDA for the Vice Presidential election.' Recalibrate export strategy with manufacturing focus: Parl Panel
The Standing Committee on Finance, in its report tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, recommended recalibrating India's export strategy with a greater focus on manufacturing competitiveness and achieving market diversification amid evolving geopolitical dynamics and ongoing economic uncertainties. The report stated that India is well-positioned to navigate current global disruptions and advance toward becoming a high-income economy faster than many of its regional counterparts. 'India's economic roadmap must aim not only for a short-term $5 trillion economy but also for sustained, inclusive, and resilient long-term growth,' the committee, chaired by Member of Parliament Bhartruhari Mahtab, said. The finance ministry informed the panel that, given geopolitical uncertainties and the evolving global trade landscape, the government's growth strategy is rooted in policies that promote resilient, inclusive, and sustainable domestic growth while staying responsive to emerging global and domestic challenges. The report, titled 'Roadmap for Indian economic growth in light of global economic and geopolitical circumstances,' noted that India is well-placed to navigate current global disruptions and advance toward becoming a high-income economy faster than many of its regional counterparts. The parliamentary panel emphasised the need for effective reforms and deregulation to become a high-income economy. The panel also stressed the pivotal role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data for effective governance, suggesting the establishment of an indigenous, government-owned AI server to address privacy concerns, improve efficiency, and harness data for informed policy-making. It expressed concern about "digital deserts" in rural and underserved areas and recommended scaling up digital infrastructure in remote locations. The committee highlighted that the investment rate in the economy must rise to around 35 per cent of GDP from the current 31 per cent to meet the ambitious growth target of 8 per cent annually for at least a decade. While acknowledging the importance of sustained capital expenditure for accelerating long-term productivity and job creation, the panel stressed the need to improve public investment efficiency to enhance output per unit of capital. On the issue of fiscal discipline at the sub-national level, the committee recommended tailored fiscal reforms in highly indebted states to improve their fiscal health while maintaining their capacity to invest in critical infrastructure and social development. The parliamentary panel also advised market regulators to be cautious about the influence of foreign investors and their potential impact on market volatility. 'To mitigate these risks, the Committee recommended prioritising domestic economic resilience through fiscal consolidation and encouraging SEBI and the RBI to continue streamlining regulations and improving market infrastructure,' the panel said, also suggesting diversification of India's investor base and promoting strategic sectors to attract committed FDI. The Committee suggested regular monitoring and evaluation of poverty reduction programmes to ensure responsiveness to emerging challenges and demographic shifts.
