Trump calls for Netanyahu's corruption trial be scrapped, calls it a ‘witch hunt' after Iran war
WASHINGTON, June 26 — US President Donald Trump weighed in on ally Benjamin Netanyahu's long-running corruption trial Wednesday, urging for Israel's 'Great War Time Prime Minister' to be exonerated after the conflict with Iran.
'Such a WITCH HUNT, for a man who has given so much, is unthinkable to me,' Trump wrote in a long post on his Truth Social platform.
The US president, who himself faced an array of criminal charges and convictions that he argued were politically motivated, said he had 'just learned that Bibi' — a nickname for Netanyahu — 'has been summoned to Court on Monday.'
'Bibi and I just went through HELL together, fighting a very tough and brilliant longtime enemy of Israel, Iran, and Bibi could not have been better, sharper, or stronger in his LOVE for the incredible Holy Land,' Trump said.
'Bibi Netanyahu's trial should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero,' Trump urged.
Trump's lavish praise for Netanyahu came a day after the US leader angrily berated Israel in an expletive-filled rant for apparently preparing to attack Iran despite a ceasefire announced the previous night.
The unusual public display of anger at Israel saw Trump apparently trying to cajole his ally to call off warplanes in real time.
Moments later he said Israeli planes would 'turn around and head home.'
Netanyahu's trial has been delayed many times since it began in May 2020, with the Israeli leader requesting postponements due to the war in Gaza and later conflict in Lebanon.
In a first case, Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, are accused of accepting more than US$260,000 (RM1.1 million) worth of luxury goods such as cigars, jewellery and champagne from billionaires in exchange for political favours.
Two other cases allege that Netanyahu attempted to negotiate more favourable coverage in two Israeli media outlets.
Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing.
Before the agreement of a ceasefire on Tuesday, Israel had pounded Iranian nuclear and military sites over the course of 12 days of war, while Iran launched waves of missiles at its regional arch foe in their deadliest-ever confrontation.
The United States joined the fray in support of its ally, hitting two nuclear facilities with massive bunker-buster bombs over the weekend, while guided missiles from a submarine struck a third.
Trump announced the ceasefire shortly after Iran retaliated with strikes targeting a US base in Qatar that the president said had been fully defeated and forewarned.
'It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu,' Trump said in his social media post. — AFP

Last week, the 'Manu Regia', an official signed invitation from the monarch which signals the start of formal planning, was hand-delivered to the White House by British representatives, with confirmation of the exact date for the trip to follow. Initially there were expectations that Trump would first come to Britain for a short trip where he would meet the king for a private meeting, ahead of the formal state visit. But it had proved impossible to find a suitable date in their diaries over the summer so planning for the state visit has begun instead, a palace source said. British state visits usually include a carriage ride through central London and a lavish state banquet, but it is not clear yet where Trump will be hosted. The late Queen Elizabeth welcomed Trump to Buckingham Palace for a three-day state visit in June 2019 during his first term in office, during which he had a private lunch with the sovereign, as well as having tea with Charles, who was then heir. That visit already put Trump in a select group of US presidents, as only Barack Obama and George W Bush were afforded official state visits to Britain during Elizabeth's record 70 years on the throne. Trump was also invited to tea at Windsor Castle, the monarch's home to the west of London during a trip to Britain in 2018. Both his visits to Britain also attracted large protests, with his 2018 trip costing police more than £14 million as 10,000 officers were deployed from all over Britain.

(AP pic) WASHINGTON : US President Donald Trump wants a pay raise for troops, more high-tech missiles and drones in next year's defence budget, while cutting Navy jobs, and buying fewer ships and fighter jets to save money, according to budget materials posted yesterday. At US$892.6 billion, the defence and national security budget request is flat compared with this year. The budget, which also includes nuclear weapons-related activities carried out by the department of energy and increases funding for homeland security, puts Trump's mark on the military by pulling funds away from weaponry and services to fund his priorities. The White House said the funding will be used to deter Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific, and revitalise the defence industrial base. Most of the funding for Trump's marquee Golden Dome missile defence shield was included in a separate budget request and is not part of the latest proposal sent to Congress. In the 2026 budget, Trump requested fewer F-35 jets made by Lockheed Martin and only three warships. 'Procurement of a Virginia-class made by General Dynamics and Huntington Ingalls Industries and 15 other ships are expected to be included in a separate appropriation bill,' the Navy said. The budget asks for a 3.8% pay raise for troops, but also trims costs by retiring older weaponry including ships and planes that are more expensive to operate. Under the plan, the Navy will reduce its civilian employee workforce by 7,286 people. Compared to Biden's budget from his last year in office, which had asked for 68 F-35 jets in fiscal 2025, Trump's fiscal 2026 request seeks only 47 of the fighter jets. The budget has already sparked debate on Capitol Hill where the House Appropriations Committee's defence subcommittee's draft bill for fiscal-year 2026 boosts the F-35 buy to 69, one more than Biden's 2025 request. The Pentagon continues prioritising purchasing munitions and key weapons systems. The Air Force is continuing its investment the Joint Air to Surface Standoff Missile – Extended Range and Long Range Anti-Ship missile which have longer ranges and can be more effective in the Pacific. On the other hand, the budget seeks far fewer Precision Strike Missile, which will replace the Army Tactical Missile (ATACM) used in Ukraine. Lockheed Martin makes all three missiles. The budget also boosts spending on small drones – in part because of lessons learned in Ukraine where unmanned aircraft have proven to be an integral part of low-cost, yet highly effective warfighting. The detailed request comes as Republicans debate defence spending priorities in their sweeping US$150 billion defence package contained in the pending 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act'. The act has already been passed the House of Representatives and will give an initial US$25 billion boost to Trump's controversial Golden Dome missile defence shield. Defence spending usually accounts for about half of the US discretionary budget; the rest goes to transportation, education, diplomacy and other departments.

Israeli attacks kill at least 21 Palestinians in Gaza

(AP pic) CAIRO : Israeli gunfire and airstrikes killed at least 21 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip today, local health authorities said, as mediators reached out to Israel and Hamas to seek a resumption of ceasefire talks to end the war. Local health authorities said an Israeli airstrike killed at least nine people at a school housing displaced families in the Sheikh Radwan suburb in Gaza City, while another strike killed nine people near a tent encampment in Khan Younis in the south of the enclave. Three other people were killed by Israeli gunfire and dozens were wounded as crowds awaited UN aid trucks along a main route in central Gaza, medics said, the latest in a series of multiple fatalities at aid distribution points. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military on today's incidents. Israel says it is seeking to eliminate rebels from Hamas, which attacked southern Israel from Gaza in 2023, and free hostages still held by the group. The new deaths come as Arab mediators, Egypt and Qatar, backed by the US, reached out to the warring parties in a bid to hold new ceasefire talks, but no exact time was set for a new round, according to Hamas sources. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who leads a coalition with far-right parties, insists that Hamas, which has ruled Gaza for nearly two decades, release all hostages, relinquish any role and lay down its weapons to end to the war. Hamas, in turn, has stated it would release the hostages if Israel agrees to a permanent ceasefire and withdraws from Gaza. While it has conceded it would no longer govern Gaza, Hamas has refused to discuss disarmament. Hamas-led rebels killed close to 1,200 people and took 251 hostages when they attacked Israel on Oct 7, 2023, according to tallies from Israel, which launched a huge military campaign in response. Israel's retaliatory war has so far killed more than 56,000 Palestinians, according to local health authorities, and destroyed much of the coastal strip. Most of the hostages released so far have been freed through indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel.
