Chanel mainstays Lily-Rose Depp, Riley Keough, Phoebe Tonkin, Ava DuVernay and H.E.R. were in attendance, as were Mick Jagger, Lupita Nyong'o, Danielle Deadwyler, Elle Fanning, Dakota Fanning, Kim Kardashian, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Patrick Dempsey, Maude Apatow, Willem Dafoe, Molly Gordon, Rita Ora, Gayle King, Michael Keaton, Natasha Lyonne, Olivia Munn, John Mulaney, Olivia Wilde, Zoey Deutch and many more.
The courtyard outside the Polo Lounge was lit with heat lamps and scattered with waiters bearing trays of skinny margaritas, as well as red and white wine. Fiennes was the first to arrive, in a crisp navy suit, and was somewhat charmingly handed a black wristband, which he gamely slipped on before heading to the bar.
'Do I look cute?' Odessa Young asked a photographer as she tried a few poses.
Keough, dressed in a feathery white Chanel mini, was momentarily stumped when asked to describe the dress in one word.
'It's great, it's a great look,' Felicity Jones offered as she walked by.
The Fanning sisters caught up with King as they waited for their moment on the carpet, each in a caped dress look.
'Always a treat, never a chore,' Lyonne quipped as she adjusted her leather jacket around her red curls before hopping in front of the cameras. She posed with boyfriend Bryn Mooser as Regé-Jean Page began his turn for photos.
'They're both my boyfriend,' she said, motioning between the two.
Mulaney looked on from afar while Munn posed for photos.
'Oh good, the only two troublemakers in Hollywood,' Lyonne said as soon as she spotted them.
Maude and Judd Apatow had a father-daughter moment, with Maude attempting to give Judd some guidance on how to button his jacket for photos.
At an event filled with people accustomed to seeing the most famous of the famous, the arrival of Jagger still managed to cause a commotion. The legendary musician indulged the crowd for some photos before giving a little wave and heading off into the room with girlfriend Melanie Hamrick in tow.
Kardashian, new to the Chanel party circuit, walked the step-and-repeat twice, so as to give her Claudia Schiffer-inspired hairstyle and archival look their proper due. Jeff Goldblum had a Chanel fashion moment in an oversize blazer and a lapel-full of camellias, while Miguel opted for tweed and a Chanel western ribbon tie.
Toward the tail end of the cocktail hour, Finch gathered everyone's attention in the garden by standing atop a ledge and addressing the crowd.
'It is a difficult time, as you know, I'm prohibited [from] making long political speeches,' Finch said, before moving into safer territory.
'It's not about that tonight. It is about the greater movies that happen here and the great people that are here tonight. We have nominees, we have amazing filmmakers. The party started really many years ago, 30 years ago, when you were all children. And it was a night where we welcomed really independent filmmakers to come and have free food,' he said. 'Nothing has changed. My passion for cinema remains the same.'
After cheers-ing (and one final pointed remark from the host: 'We will not give into tyranny'), it was time to find seats — and Finch took a fork to a plate to corral people as such.
'I didn't see you at Diane von Furstenberg,' a gentleman said by way of greeting to another guest.
'I don't go to day events,' came the reply.
'Are you here?' Elle Fanning asked Depp as she and Dakota slid over into their booth to make room for her.
Those who skipped the cameras popped up at tables inside the restaurant: Al Pacino and his much-younger companion, who waved off photographers on the actor's behalf; Stan and his girlfriend Annabelle Wallis were late arrivals, and lingered outside deep in conversation with Dan Stevens; Leonardo DiCaprio materialized, black baseball hat on, taking a seat at a round table in the back, which he requested. The only pictures he took were for Brody's mother, who snapped a few of her son and DiCaprio on her iPhone.

New 'Old Skool' Vans shoes sell out, listed for hundreds on resale market
Squeaky clean sneakers may just be a thing of the past. Sold out in less than 24 hours, Vans' new sneaker features a pre-worn style with muddled coloring, tweed fringe detailing, and laces and soles that appear dirty – though they are brand new. The Premium Old Skool Shoe in Souvenir Warm Brown went live on the Vans website late July 30 and by the next day, the sneakers were already sold out. The Vans website, as of July 31, states that 118 people had purchased the sneakers. Originally $125, the limited-edition sneakers are now available for between $500 to $1,600 on eBay. Here's what we know about the Premium Old Skool Shoe and what Vans fans think about them. 'Y'all getting these???': Nike is releasing dirty Air Force 1s, social media is perplexed Vans Warped Tour: First few bands for 2025 comeback following hiatus What do the Old Skool 36 'Souvenir' Vans look like? The canvas of the low-top skate sneakers appears spraypainted with brown leather overlays. The sneakers feature multicolored tweed strip detailing and Vans-themed pins on the sides for "bag-like embellishment." The laces are a dark, off-white and the white soles appear dirty, though they are brand new. The sneakers appear to be inspired by Chanel's On the Pavement messenger bag, a part of the designer's Graffiti Collection, first introduced in 2014. The messenger bag, which is only available for high-dollar resale prices online, features the same spraypainted, muddled brown coloring, multicolored tweed detailing, vintage-style pins and overall distressed apperance. A version of the messenger bag is available on the Sotheby's website for $15,150. Vans brushed off comparisons in a statement to USA TODAY, saying the shoes were rooted in its creative branding. What are people saying? On Instagram, some of the comments on a vague Vans Instagram post promoting the sneaker's launch July 30, criticized the shoe's design. "I want 'em and get the reference. Very good creative direction, but take one step back and they do lowkey look like barf," one Instagram user commented on the Vans' post. Other creators and social media users are upset that the shoes were sold in such a limited run, with the sneakers going live on the Vans' website, and available in some retail stores, ahead of the date and time Vans promoted on social media – 9 a.m. ET on July 31. Back to school: Top shoe deals from Hoka, Rothy's, Nike and more Vans in its statement told USA TODAY that the official launch of the sneaker was July 31. The pre-worn trend Vans is certainly not the first brand to tap into the pre-worn style. Actually, Golden Goose is known for the trend, releasing its popular line of distressed sneakers in 2007, which continue to dominate the "pre-worn" market. Golden Goose's top-selling Super-Star sneaker, which sports a "dirty, scuffed" sole, is nearly $600. In 2021, New Balance released its "Protection Pack," a line of sneakers that appear to have torn fabric. Last year, Puma released a collaborative sneaker with A$AP Rocky called "Inhale Distressed." The $130 sneakers, now sold out, came in a grungy box and appeared covered in grease. And earlier this year, Nike released its Air Force 1 Low in "Dirty Triple White." The $130 sneakers appear dirty, creased and scuffed despite being brand new. Greta Cross is a national trending reporter at USA TODAY. Story idea? Lynette Howell Taylor elected new president of the motion picture academy
Hollywood's most exclusive club has a new leader. Producer Lynette Howell Taylor has been elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the group's board of governors announced Thursday, becoming the 37th person to hold the post in the academy's 97-year history. Howell Taylor, a member of the organization's producers branch since 2014, succeeds Janet Yang, who was elected in 2022 and is stepping down after three consecutive one-year terms. Howell Taylor takes the helm alongside CEO Bill Kramer as the organization continues to confront a rapidly shifting landscape for the Oscars and the broader film industry. An academy member since 2014 and, at 46, the youngest president named to the post in decades, the British-born Howell Taylor brings both deep production experience and long-standing involvement in academy leadership. Over the past two decades, she has produced more than 25 films, including 'A Star is Born,' which earned her a best picture nomination in 2019. Her other credits include 'Captain Fantastic,' 'Blue Valentine,' 'The Place Beyond the Pines' and the upcoming 'Roofman.' In 2020, she co-produced the 92nd Oscars ceremony with Stephanie Allain, receiving an Emmy nomination for the broadcast that was capped by a historic win for Bong Joon Ho's 'Parasite.' Within the academy, Howell Taylor served three years as vice president and chair of the powerful awards committee, where she played a key role in shaping the Oscars' direction in a time of institutional change. In a meeting at the academy's Beverly Hills headquarters, the 55-member board also elected a slate of officers for the 2025–26 term. Composer Lesley Barber, producer Jennifer Fox, documentary filmmaker Simon Kilmurry, actor Lou Diamond Phillips and screenwriter Howard A. Rodman will serve as vice presidents, with Kilmurry also taking on the role of treasurer and Rodman serving as secretary. Barber and Rodman are returning officers; the others are serving in officer roles for the first time. As president, Howell Taylor will be expected to help steer the organization through a period of reinvention and uncertainty not just for the academy but for the industry as a whole. The academy continues to wrestle with declining Oscars viewership — this year's telecast averaged 19.7 million viewers, up from the previous year but still less than half what the show pulled in at its peak in the 1990s. The presidency is an unpaid, largely ceremonial role but it has taken on added weight in recent years amid growing scrutiny of the academy's decision-making, including, most notoriously, in the aftermath of Will Smith's 2022 Oscars slap. 'Lynette has been a vital part of the Academy Board of Governors for many years, most recently revitalizing our awards work as chair of the board's Awards Committee,' Kramer said in a statement. 'I so look forward to working with her as our new Academy President, as well as with these incredibly dedicated and strategic board officers. This is an exceptional group of Academy members who will advance the Academy's mission, support our membership around the world, ensure our long-term financial stability, and celebrate the achievements of the global filmmaking community.'

‘A Star Is Born' producer Lynette Howell Taylor elected president of Oscars org
Veteran producer Lynette Howell Taylor has been elected president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Taylor will succeed Janet Yang in the role, presiding over the organization that puts on the Oscars, film academy CEO Bill Kramer said Thursday. An academy member since 2014, Taylor has served the organization in several high-profile positions, including as vice president and chair of the awards committee. She's also a prolific film producer whose works include 'A Star Is Born' (2018), 'Blue Valentine' and 'The Accountant.' She also produced the 92nd Oscars broadcast. Taylor is now the fifth woman to lead the film academy. The outgoing president, Yang, was elected to the position in 2022 and served in the role for the maximum of three years. Kramer said in a statement that Taylor has been a vital part of the board of governors and singled out how she 'revitalized our awards work.' Several officers were also elected by the board, including actor Lou Diamond Phillips as chair of the equity and inclusion committee and producer Jennifer Fox, who will chair the awards committee. 'This is an exceptional group of Academy members who will advance the Academy's mission, support our membership around the world, ensure our long-term financial stability, and celebrate the achievements of the global filmmaking community,' Kramer said. After years of declining ratings, the Oscars have been on an upswing the past few years. March's broadcast, in which 'Anora' won five Oscars, drew some 19.7 million viewers, a slight uptick from the ceremony the year prior, when 'Oppenheimer' dominated. The organization has already announced that Conan O'Brien will return as host in 2026 and has made several big changes for the future, including adding a stunt design award, starting with films released in 2027, and one for casting directors, which goes into effect this year.
