South Berwick man told police he accidentally shot and killed girlfriend

Yahoo28-03-2025
Mar. 28—A South Berwick man accused of killing of his girlfriend told police that the shooting was a "bad mishap" during a dispute between the couple, according to court documents.
Jeremiah Godfrey, 43, was arrested several days after 37-year-old Sherri Sweet died in the hospital from a gunshot wound to her head. He faces one count of murder and is currently being held in York County Jail without bail. He appeared in York County Superior Court for his initial appearance on Friday afternoon but was not yet required to enter a plea.
An affidavit for his arrest describes Godfrey telling investigators that he takes responsibility for pulling the trigger and firing a single shot that hit Sweet in the back of her head.
The two had gotten into an argument at their home on Brattle Street on Saturday evening when Godfrey went upstairs to retrieve his Glock pistol, which he told police he uses for protection from local wildlife like fisher cats and coyotes, according to court documents. He said he planned to go to an outbuilding on their property, where he "usually goes when he needs to leave the residence after an argument."
But before he could leave the house, Godfrey said, Sweet was walking down the stairs in front of him and turned around to grab the gun. He told investigators that she was facing him and that he didn't point the weapon at her, but said his finger was on the trigger when it went off.
"I just held onto it as she grabbed it and went to pull as she walked down the stairs," he said in a police interview, according to the affidavit written by Maine State Police detective Justin Huntley.
At various points in the interview, investigators noted that he described the shooting as a "bad mishap" on his behalf.
Godfrey's attorney did not return messages asking to discuss the case Friday afternoon.
When South Berwick police officers arrived at the scene, they found a small child lying on the living room couch and arranged for a family member to remove them from the house.
Sweet was brought to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where she died a day later. While she was on life support, detectives located a bullet fragment on the staircase. The autopsy, which was completed on Monday, determined her death to be the result of a homicide from a gunshot wound to the back of her head.
State police arrested Godfrey on Wednesday afternoon after requesting and obtaining a warrant that same day.
It's not clear why police did not immediately arrest Godfrey. A spokesperson for the Maine State Police had declined to provide further information about the investigation.

LSU football's JT Lindsey surrenders after being accused of allowing murder suspects to stay in his dorm

LSU freshman running back JT Lindsey surrendered to campus police on Friday after a warrant was issued for his arrest on two felony counts of accessory after-the-fact to second degree murder, his attorney told WAFB-TV. He is accused of allowing two individuals — 17-year-old Shemell Jacobs and 18-year-old Keldrick Jordan — wanted on murder charges to stay in his LSU dorm room earlier this year, according to the arrest warrant obtained by the outlet. Jacobs and Jordan are accused of killing 17-year-old Corey Brooks in a fatal shooting in Alexandria, La., in May. 7 JT Lindsey surrendered to campus police on Friday. His bond was set at $5,000 and he was released later on Friday, per WAFB-TV. 7 Shemell Jacobs and Keldrick Jordan are accused of second degree murder. Alexandria Police Department 'On 8/4/25 LSUPD was contacted by the U.S. Marshals Service, asking for help in locating the suspect,' the arrest warrant said. 'LSUPD was able to quickly locate Jacobs via surveillance footage and found him to be in and around Riverbend Hall. At approx. 1815 hrs LSUPD, along with assisting law enforcement agencies, were able to locate both Jacobs and Jordan in apartment 4071 of Riverbend Hall. 'In addition to this, Jacobs had Lindsey's LSU ID on his person and was able to provide Lindsey's personal pin code, which allowed him to come and go from the apartment and dorm building. When reviewing recorded surveillance footage, Lindsey can be seen in the dorm building with Jacobs and Jordan as far back as 7/24/25 and on multiple occasions, Jacobs and Jordan come and go without Lindsey, using his LSU ID to access the building.' 7 JT Lindsey catches a pass during LSU practice on Aug. 1, 2025. WAFB Perret also said Lindsey is not alleged to be involved in 'the alleged crimes of the arrested individuals.' 'He is fully cooperating with authorities and looks forward to clearing his name as quickly as possible. …He was unaware that the individuals arrested had committed any crimes or that they had been accused of any crimes, or that they were wanted by the police for questioning when he allowed them to stay at his apartment. Feds, state authorities charge 41 with gunrunning, weapon possession, other crimes as part of 2-month crackdown

When Chicago police responded to a shots-fired call at Riis Park in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on a May afternoon, witnesses told them a young man standing next to a scooter had fired a gun onto the park's football field. The man, later identified as Eddie Arguelles, took off on the scooter, court records show, only to be arrested a few minutes later. Police records allege that the 20-year-old had a gun on him: a loaded, black .40-caliber Glock pistol with an extended magazine attachment and a switch conversion device. Arguelles, 20, faces federal charges of machine gun possession alongside state-level felony charges already brought against him. He is one of 41 defendants who have been arrested in a two-month crackdown on illegal guns and switches, federal authorities announced Tuesday. Switches turn ordinary handguns into fully automatic weapons that can fire dozens of rounds each time the trigger is pulled. Federal officials said in a news release they'd recovered 171 weapons and 64 switches during the effort, which Chicago police Superintendent Larry Snelling said was meant to combat the 'proliferation' of the devices in the city. According to the news release, authorities traced 'a significant number' of the recovered weapons to violent criminal activity that took place in and around Chicago over the last eight years. Among the 18 federal defendants arrested as part of the push is Melvin Doyle, the father of drill rapper Mello Buckzz. Doyle was charged with gun possession last month in a case unrelated to a drive-by rifle attack that apparently targeted people attending his daughter's album release party and led to one of the worst mass shootings Chicago has seen in recent memory. Two minors are also among the accused at the state level, according to the news release. Most of the federal charges allege machine gun possession or firearm possession by a felon, the news release stated. Defendants at the state level face charges of armed violence, gunrunning and machine gun possession among other allegations. Federal prosecutors, Chicago police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives, the Cook County state's attorney's office, and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul's office were all involved with the push, per the news release. Though Chicago is currently seeing a dip in violent crime after a spike during the COVID-19 pandemic, how to address persistent gun violence remains a major theme of city and state politics. Cook County State's Attorney Eileen O'Neill Burke has spent much of her first few months in office seeking to take a tougher stance on gun crimes and last winter directed prosecutors to seek prison sentences for every felony case involving machine gun-type weapons. That order met a warm reception from Snelling and concerns about 'mass injustice' from Cook County Public Defender Sharone Mitchell. Former U.S. Attorney John Lausch called conversion switches a matter of utmost concern. 'Machine guns pose a dangerous threat to public safety and have no place on Chicago-area streets,' Lausch said in 2020, just as switches were beginning to flood the black have recovered more and more weapons with switches since 2019, according to ATF data provided to the Tribune by the state's attorney's office. In 2023, Chicago-area authorities recovered 564 such weapons and 604 in 2024 — up from 40 in 2019. Nationwide, according to the National Firearms Commerce and Trafficking Assessment, the number of switches recovered has increased by almost 800%.
