Flash Floods Inundate Southeast Wisconsin, 9 Inches Of Rain Triggers Life-Threatening Situation
Last Updated: The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for southeast Wisconsin on August 10, causing severe flooding in Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee, and Washington counties. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for parts of southeast Wisconsin on August 10. The latest alert, covering southern Washington County and southern Ozaukee counties, has been issued until 8:15 a.m. as heavy rain slowly moves north. According to Country Herald, some areas have already received 5 to 9 inches of rainfall overnight, with additional downpours expected before sunrise. Due to the severe flash floods that impacted the Milwaukee area, the Wisconsin State Fair was forced to close early on Saturday. Flooding affected multiple counties in southeast Wisconsin on Sunday morning, with videos online showing vehicles stranded in high water, fairgoers evacuating, and others enjoying the rain despite the conditions. Officials announced that Tunnel Entrance F was closed due to the storm and advised visitors to use the Main Stage or Turn 4 exits to reach the state fair parking lots. Severe flooding swept across much of southeast Wisconsin from the evening of August 9 through the morning of August 10, with some parts of the metro area receiving over 6 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. Anyone in an impacted area is advised not to travel unless fleeing a flooded area or following evacuation orders. In Wauwatosa, the Menomonee River overflowed its banks, damaging the 68th Street bridge. At its peak overnight, the river reached a height of 14 feet. According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, flash flood warnings remain in effect until at least 5:30 a.m. for Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties. Additional rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is possible, worsening already dangerous conditions. As of 10 p.m. Saturday, We Energies reports nearly 10,000 people in Milwaukee County are without power. In neighbouring Waukesha County, more than 8,000 customers are also experiencing outages. Residents are advised to stay off the roads, avoid driving through flooded areas, and watch for basement flooding and rising creek levels. Flooding at night is particularly dangerous because of reduced visibility. Get breaking news, in-depth analysis, and expert perspectives on everything from geopolitics to diplomacy and global trends.
