PQA: charges cut in half for exporters

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Monday, announced cutting port charges at Port Qasim Authority (PQA) by 50 percent for exporters, aligning with the government's reform agenda to enhance trade and economic growth.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry made this announcement here, while chairing a high-level strategic roadmap meeting.
Chaudhry emphasised the government's commitment to creating opportunities for local businessmen and encouraging domestic trade through ports and fisheries.
The government's reform agenda in the maritime sector, including the charge reduction at Port Qasim, signals a strong commitment to supporting the business community, enhancing trade facilitation, and promoting economic development across coastal regions, he added.
He announced plans to establish an Aquaculture Industrial Zone aimed at promoting business activities in the marine and aquaculture sectors. He revealed that Pakistan's first-ever Marine and Aquaculture Policy will be introduced soon to provide a comprehensive framework for sustainable development in these areas.
The meeting also reported impressive achievements by the Marine Fisheries Department, which has met its export target of $410 million this year through fisheries and aquaculture exports. Additionally, the ship recycling industry has generated revenue of 6 billion Pakistani rupees, reflecting the growing potential of maritime industries in the country.
Chaudhry underscored the importance of green shipping initiatives, aligning with global trends to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable maritime practices. He stressed that the government is focused on modernising port infrastructure, streamlining customs operations, and fostering a business-friendly environment to enhance Pakistan's competitiveness in international trade.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs is actively working on reforms to unlock the economic potential of vast coastline and maritime resources. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to transform the maritime sector, boost exports, and contribute significantly to the country's GDP, he noted.

Can Iran really shut down the Strait of Hormuz?

Qatar suspending air traffic across the country and some western embassies advising their citizens in this Gulf state are some of the new developments that strongly reflect growing escalation in the Middle East. Iran's decision that it reserves the right to retaliate to US strikes on its nuclear installation has heightened fears in the world in general and in the Middle East in particular. It is now increasingly clear that the Strait of Hormuz, a shipping channel in the Gulf, will be shut for maritime traffic by Iran anytime soon. Needless to say, 20 percent of world's energy supplies pass through the strait, which is the only deep-water route capable of handling the world's largest crude tankers. It is therefore important to note that the US, a party to the conflict, has urged China to prevent Iran from closing the Strait of Hormuz after Iranian parliament approved a plan to close one of the world's most important shipping routes. But Iranian navy has not yet taken that step because the final decision lies with the country's Supreme National Security Council. Nevertheless, the shutting down of the Strait of Hormuz looks imminent owing to growing escalation in the Middle East. Sajid Rizvi (Dubai) Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

National EV Policy: Atlas Honda to launch electric scooter in Pakistan this fiscal year

Atlas Honda announced on Tuesday of launching an electric scooter tailored for Pakistani consumers in the current fiscal year. As per an official notice sent to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the company announced its intention following the government's announcement of the National Electric Vehicle Policy. As per Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan, the new EV policy was aligned with the prime minister's vision of promoting clean, sustainable, and affordable transportation while encouraging local industry and protecting the environment. Akhtar said one of the major targets under the policy was to ensure that 30% of all new vehicles sold in Pakistan by 2030 would be electric. The transition is projected to save 2.07 billion litres of fuel annually, amounting to nearly $1 billion in foreign exchange savings. Meanwhile, Honda said that it was working closely with regulatory bodies to secure permissions and approvals to ensure a smooth rollout. 'After completing the necessary quality and road tests, the company plans to launch the product in the current financial year,' the company wrote to PSX. Honda has tested Electric Vehicle (EVs) in the past. In 2023, the company unveiled its electric scooter 'BENLEY e' during a 'soft' launch at its Sheikhupura factory. Chief Officer of Motorcycle and Power Products at Atlas Honda Noriaki Abe said at the event that 'BENLY e' will be offered for test marketing while new products will be offered based on feedback.
