Boost for Mabul Island conservation efforts
KOTA KINABALU: Efforts to protect coral reefs and endangered sea turtles in Mabul Island, off Semporna, have received a timely boost through two new conservation initiatives.
The year-long programmes, carried out in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah's Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI-UMS) and conservation group One Ocean Empire, aim to restore marine habitats using scientifically proven strategies.
'The initiatives include the development of coral nurseries, propagation of 200 corals and protection of two turtle nests.
'We also provide skills training for local communities to support marine conservation, sustainable fishing and eco-tourism,' said Sawit Kinabalu Group deputy chief executive officer Datin Stella Ambrose.
She presented mock cheques worth RM10,000 and RM20,000 respectively to BMRI-UMS, represented by assoc prof Dr Zarinah Waheed, and One Ocean Empire, represented by founder, Monica Chin, at a recent ceremony.
Sipadan, Malaysia's only oceanic island is world-renowned for its rich marine biodiversity and top-tier diving.
Located off Sabah's east coast, its coral reefs are teeming with turtles, barracudas, reef sharks and more.
Strict conservation rules, including daily permit limits and no overnight stays, are in place to safeguard its fragile ecosystem.

New task force needed to monitor animal-to-human disease risks, say experts
KOTA KINABALU: Experts from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) have called for the formation of an interdisciplinary task force to address the growing threat of zoonotic diseases in Borneo. They said the task force should include representatives from government agencies, academic institutions and conservation bodies. In a joint statement, UMS Biotechnology Research Institute's Professor Dr Vijay Kumar and Associate Professor Dr Zarina Amin said that while Borneo's biodiversity is unparalleled, increasing infrastructural development has raised the risk of zoonotic spillovers - where pathogens jump from animals to humans. "In Sabah, where human-wildlife interactions are frequent, biosurveillance must remain a priority. "The spread of infectious diseases not only threatens public health, but also tourism, agriculture and conservation efforts." A well-documented example is Plasmodium knowlesi malaria, transmitted from macaques to humans by mosquitoes. In addition, several previously unknown coronaviruses - similar to SARS and COVID-19 - have been detected in bats in Sabah, highlighting the risks faced by tourists and locals visiting bat-inhabited caves. Sabah's poultry farms have also experienced outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in 2018, while neighbouring Sarawak continues to battle rabies, which accounts for nearly all reported cases in Malaysia. Livestock and wildlife diseases are an increasing concern. Strains of Newcastle Disease Virus and Infectious Bronchitis Virus have impacted Sabah's poultry industry, while African Swine Fever has devastated wild and farmed pig populations. Marine wildlife is not spared either. On Mabul Island and surrounding waters, an increasing number of sea turtles are suffering from fibropapillomatosis, a herpesvirus-linked disease. Melioidosis, which thrives in Sabah's tropical soil, has infected humans and wildlife - including orangutans and macaques. Leptospirosis also remains a persistent threat. "Looking ahead, large-scale developments such as Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara, in East Kalimantan could significantly disrupt Borneo's ecosystems. "Increased deforestation, agricultural expansion, and hydropower projects will likely escalate human-wildlife conflict, habitat loss and disease spillovers." The experts urged for a strengthened One Health approach, combining genomic surveillance, AI analytics, public education, enforcement against poaching, sustainable land-use policies, and better policy integration and funding.

Melaka allocates RM700,000 for 'Bijak SPM' initiative
MELAKA: The Melaka government has allocated RM700,000 under the 2025 State Budget to implement an excellence programme for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates through the SPM Smart Initiative, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the implementation of the initiative involved 95 secondary schools and would benefit 12,757 SPM candidates in the state. 'The main goal of this initiative is to support schools in implementing various excellence programmes, including answering technique workshops, final preparation workshops, and the provision of SPM learning materials, to help students face the exam with greater confidence and readiness. 'We will also hold high-tech workshops to ensure students are well-prepared to face the challenges of an increasingly technology-driven world,' he told reporters here today. He said this after opening the 2024 SPM Excellent Student Appreciation Ceremony and the 2025 Melaka Bijak SPM programme, which was also attended by Deputy State Investment, Industry and TVET Development Committee chairman Datuk Khaidirah Abu Zaha According to Ab Rauf, the state government is allocating RM381,100, through the Melaka Education Trust Fund (Tapem), this year for the Bijak Sejarah dan Cemerlang SPM initiatives. He said that under the initiative, students who obtained straight A+'s would receive an incentive of RM1,000 and students who obtained straight A's would receive RM500, while students who obtained an A+ in History would receive RM200. 'This year, the state government also allocated RM200,000 for the implementation of the Free Tuition Programme for SPM and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) students, especially those from the B40 group,' he said. In another development, he said that as part of efforts to expand access to education, the state government is taking steps to establish itself as the National TVET Centre, providing more opportunities for Melaka's youth to master high-tech skills aligned with current industry demands. 'Melaka currently has 61 TVET institutions offering various skills-based courses, and the confidence of foreign nations in the potential of local youth was recently demonstrated when the Chinese government offered 15 TVET scholarships to Malaysia, with five awarded to students from Melaka. 'This indirectly proves that Melaka is now ahead of other states in TVET development, convincing foreign countries to prioritise opportunities for our people,' he said.

Sabah Agro-Industrial Park enters new phase with agro-pharma firms

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Agro-Industrial Park (Saip) has entered a new phase of development with two leading companies, Callabio Manufacturing Sdn Bhd and Sanomedical Asiapac Sdn Bhd, officially commencing operations at the high-tech facilities in Kimanis. Callabio Manufacturing Sdn Bhd will operate the Herbal Processing Facility (HPF) and Product Manufacturing Facility (PLF), producing nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, herbal-based food products, and isotonic drinks. Meanwhile, Sanomedical Asiapac Sdn Bhd will manage the Cosmetic Laboratory, focusing on the manufacturing of medical and healthcare products. The lease agreements between Saip Sdn Bhd and the two companies were signed by Saip Directors Datuk James Wong and Datuk Dr Ramzah Dambul. Callabio was represented by its Chief Executive Officer Dr Shahir Suhaimi, while Sanomedical was represented by its General Manager Helgah Veronica Smith Lagadan. Both companies committed deposits of RM125,000 and RM100,000 respectively to begin operations at Saip. Present at the signing ceremony was the Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship who is also the Chairman of Saip Sdn Bhd Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe. He said this development aligns with the State Government's goal to position Saip as an incubation hub for local agro-industry and biotechnology entrepreneurs. 'Saip is more than just an industrial park, it is a platform for talent development, innovation, and high-value manufacturing that will propel Sabah forward in the agro-biotech sector,' Phoong said. During the event, CAIQ Biosecurity Sdn Bhd also presented a proposal for a joint venture with Saip to establish the industrial park as a key centre for testing, inspection and registration of food, supplements, agricultural, and aquaculture products from Sabah for export to China.
