Japan, S. Korea to allow 2nd working holiday visas to boost ties

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan and South Korea will start allowing their citizens to apply for a second working holiday visa from October, removing the existing one-time-only limit, to promote bilateral exchanges and deeper ties, government sources said Thursday. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung are expected to agree on the change during their summit in Tokyo on Saturday, the sources said. South Korea will become the ninth country with which Japan has an arrangement to issue second working holiday visas, following Austria, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand and Slovakia. Bilateral relations between Tokyo and Seoul have been improving in recent years, after hitting a low due to issues related to wartime history and territory. The Asian neighbors are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties this year. Working holiday programs allow visa holders to work while on holiday in another country. Young people aged between 18 and 25 are eligible to apply for the reciprocal program between Japan and South Korea. After the launch of its first working holiday program with Australia in 1980, Japan now has similar arrangements with 30 countries and regions, according to the Foreign Ministry. Last year, about a third of the total number of working holiday visas issued, or around 7,400, went to South Korean nationals, the ministry said, with the number remaining on an uptrend. Japan is a popular destination to visit for South Koreans and vice versa. Japan took in some 8.8 million visitors from South Korea, the largest among other places in 2024. Ishiba and Lee, who is set to visit Japan for the first time as South Korean president, are expected to affirm the importance of stronger bilateral ties, enabled by such means as reciprocal visits at the summit level.

Nissan eyes selling HQ office to U.S. investment fund for 90 bil. yen

TOKYO - Nissan Motor Co. is likely to sell its headquarters building in Yokohama, near Tokyo, to U.S. investment fund KKR & Co., sources close to the matter said Thursday. The Japanese automaker plans to use funds from the deal, expected to be worth around 90 billion yen ($609 million), to cover business restructuring costs, the sources said. The company is overhauling its operations to restore profitability by reducing its global workforce and production capacity. KKR is believed to have submitted the highest bid in a tender conducted by Nissan for the "sale and leaseback" of the building. The automaker is expected to officially decide by late September whether to move forward with the sale, according to the sources.
