Italian sportsman Mattia Debertolis dies after competing at World Games in China
International Orienteering Federation president Tom Hollowell said in a statement on Tuesday that he was 'not able to adequately describe in words the unfathomable depth of sadness in this tragic loss of life.'
World Games organizers had previously said that Debertolis, 29, fell unconscious while participating in a men's middle-distance event last Friday.
Debertolis was a member of the Italy team and had participated in several World Championships and World Cups. He placed fifth in the 2022 World Cup final relay.

Carlisle man wins gold at World Games
A MAN from Carlisle has won gold in the World Games, a multi-sport event for sports and disciplines that are not in the programme of the Olympic Games. The games take place every four years, like the Olympics, and have been held in Chengdu, China, this year. Joe Birch, a joiner from Carlisle, won a gold medal at the games in Tug of War, as Team GB beat the Switzerland team in the final. Joe said: "I'm so emotional, when you put so much sacrifice, so much discipline and so much training into something, and then you feel the elation knowing it paid off, you can't describe it. "It's possibly not even sunk in yet." Many sports from the World Games have been integrated into the Olympics, as the Olympic committee watches the evet closely. The gold medal that Joe received has a pendant within it that can be made into a necklace, to be passed onto the younger generations to inspire future athletes in a specific sport. He said: "That set me off a bit, I have two wonderful young kids , and I hope I can inspire them." The World Games are seen as the pinnacle of the Tug of war sport, and the qualification process is difficult. "To get to the games was even an achievement in itself, but to get to that level is years and years of work, it doesn't just happen overnight." Joe has been participating in the sport for over 15 years, he began while he was in his Young Farmers club. Joe said: "90 per cent of 'pullers' come through Young Farmers, so we are very lucky in Cumbria to have such a fantastic Young Farmers structure." Joe works for Kirkaldy and Roe, a building and construction company in Carlisle, who support the gold medal winner by allowing early finishes and days off to travel to competitions and training.

During his three seasons with the Golden State Warriors, Juan Toscano-Anderson was the only Mexican-American player in the NBA. Now, his professional basketball career is taking him out of North America entirely. He was athletic enough to participate in the NBA's Slam Dunk Contest, and in 2021 made one of the most impressive out-of-bounds saves you'll ever see. While we're here, let's watch him dunk on Andre Drummond. Toscano-Anderson signed with the Los Angeles Lakers before the 2022-23 season, but didn't find his niche like he did as a Warrior. He was a throw-in in the deal that sent Russell Westbrook out of L.A. in exchange for Forever Warrior D'Angelo Russell at midseason. JTA finished the season with the Utah Jazz, played a few games for the Sacramento Kings in 2023-24, then spent last season with the Mexico City Capitanes of the G League. JTA will be forever beloved in the city of Oakland and among Warriors fans, and it's truly impressive to carve out a 10-year pro career anywhere after going undrafted. But it goes to show how difficult it is to stay in the NBA. If Malcolm Brogdon, the Sixth Man of the Year two years ago, still can't find an NBA home, it's incredibly tough for a guy like Toscano-Anderson. He'll be able to see a former Warrior teammate in Serie A. Nico Mannion plays for Olimpia Milano, who competes in both Serie A and the EuroLeague, though the Warriors have held onto his rights. We wish Juan Toscano-Anderson a fond, 'Arrivederci!' Let's hope that Serie A has a dunk contest.
