The Webb telescope's look at an Earth-size alien planet was bleak
Researchers who used the James Webb Space Telescope, a joint partnership of NASA and its European and Canadian counterparts, determined the third planet from the TRAPPIST-1 star is unlikely to have air. For anyone keeping count, that's strike three for the system, which lies about 40 light-years away from Earth in space.
The new findings on exoplanet TRAPPIST-1d, published in The Astrophysical Journal on Wednesday, mirror similar results for TRAPPIST-1b and TRAPPIST-1c, which orbit closer to their red dwarf host, a tiny-yet-violent type of star found throughout the galaxy.
"On a personal level, of course, there's a part of me that would have loved to see signs of air on TRAPPIST-1d," Caroline Piaulet-Ghorayeb, a University of Chicago fellow and lead author of the paper, told Mashable. "Science isn't about hoping for a yes, it's about finding what's real. So here we've learned that TRAPPIST-1d is not an Earth twin."
Astronomers discovered the TRAPPIST-1 system about eight years ago with the now-retired Spitzer Space Telescope. Soon they made the swarming exoplanets a priority for investigating their potential for life, with all seven roughly the size of Earth.
Scientists were particularly interested in finding out whether the TRAPPIST planets have atmospheres, because red dwarfs are the most ubiquitous kind of star in the Milky Way. If these planets can retain atmospheres, even while subjected to close-range blasts of stellar radiation, perhaps an abundance of other worlds out there could, too.
When TRAPPIST-1b and TRAPPIST-1c didn't appear to have atmospheres, the research community wasn't deterred, as neither sibling planet was predicted to have one, given how close they are to the star.
But TRAPPIST-1d, which circles the star every four days, is a different story. This exoplanet is on the cusp of the star's theorized habitable zone — the region of space where worlds might be able to have lakes and oceans on their surfaces.

Webb observed TRAPPIST-1d with a method called transmission spectroscopy. When a planet crosses in front of its host star, starlight should shine through its atmosphere, if there is one. Molecules within an atmosphere absorb certain light wavelengths, or colors, so astronomers can look for missing segments of the rainbow to figure out chemicals in its composition. The researchers looked for things like water vapor, methane, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide.
But first, the team had to account for so-called "stellar contamination." Just like the sun, red dwarfs can get sunspots, so their starlight isn't completely uniform. Variability in the light signals can obscure or even imitate signals coming from a planet. After correcting for this problem in the data, the researchers found no clear signs of gases.
That means scientists can rule out certain types of atmospheres, like the thick hydrogen-rich atmosphere of Neptune, or a cloud-free atmosphere akin to that of early Earth. But a few other potential scenarios could explain the results without the planet having to be a barren rock. It could have an extremely thin atmosphere, sort of like Mars, that would be difficult to detect with this method, Piaulet-Ghorayeb said, or it could have thick, high-altitude clouds blocking atmospheric signatures, perhaps like Venus.
"We also learned something about what the best way to even look for water in the atmosphere of these temperate planets might be," she said. "Maybe transmission spectroscopy isn't it."
Whether red dwarf stars, sometimes called M-type, can harbor planets with atmospheres is a key question for Webb to answer. The observatory has begun a massive study of rocky worlds, first reported by Mashable, specifically to figure out if planets orbiting closely around them could have air. Rather than transmission spectroscopy, the survey will rely on a different method, called the secondary eclipse technique, which avoids some of the stellar contamination issues.
The team says not to give up on the TRAPPIST system just yet. After all, planets E, F, G, and H could have a better chance of holding onto their atmospheres because they're farther from the star's flares, which can strip away a planet's atmosphere. In particular, TRAPPIST researchers are looking forward to studying E, the fourth planet from the star.
The challenge for Webb will be overcoming the planets' more extreme distance and colder environments, which make atmospheric readings more difficult.
What makes Piaulet-Ghorayeb hopeful about the continued quest for rocky worlds with water and air is the milestone achieved.
"For the first time, if there had been an Earth-like atmosphere on a temperate terrestrial planet, we could have found it," she said. "And I don't think that in any study before, with any instrument that we had before, we could really get to that level of precision."

Want to see the planet parade? Here's when to view the last show of 2025
Did you miss the start of the planetary alignment last week? Well, don't worry, you'll still have a few more days to see it before the month is up. But this will be your last chance for the year. Usually, people can look up at the bright sky and spot at least one planet. Two or three planets are also commonly hanging out in the night sky, according to NASA. But what about when four, five, or even six planets are visible? Well, from Saturday, Aug. 16, to Wednesday, Aug. 20, six planets will be visible, according to Andrew Fazekas, the Communications Manager for Astronomers Without Borders. Stargazers hoping to see all of the planets will have "a very short window of time" to do so, Fazekas said. As Mercury will be more difficult to see the further we get to the end of August, and only a few of the planets will be visible with the naked eye. Here's what you should know about the planetary alignment, also known as the planetary parade or planet parade, and what you need to see it. Stargazers have another chance to view the planetary parade The planet parade, where all six planets are aligned, started on Aug. 10. They include Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus. For those behind, Aug. 16 to Aug. 20 will become crucial to stargazers scared of missing out, according to Fazekas. From Aug. 19 and Aug. 20, the crescent moon will line up with Jupiter and Venus and be a "great guidepost" to help people spot the planets, Fazekas adds. The planetary parade will be visible around 45 minutes before sunset and the next one won't happen until Feb. 28, 2026, according to Starwalk. What will you be able to see? Six of the seven planets visible from Earth will be in the night sky if you're looking at the right time. "You can actually see all of them if you have, of course, binoculars and telescopes handy," said Fazekas. You will be able to see the following planets during the planetary parade: What do planets look like? Fazekas asks would-be stargazers to be wary of what they see online, especially now, as content created by AI becomes more prominent. Fazekas is worried people are "expecting too much. Because when you're talking about planetary parade, people think, 'oh, I'm going to see all these planets all together. I can't believe I'm going to see all of these things.' And really, to the untrained eye, the planets... just look like bright stars." What is a planetary parade? When multiple planets are visible in the night sky, people refer to it as a planetary alignment or parade, according to Fazekas and NASA. They can create an optical illusion that looks like there is a straight line. True planetary alignment is "virtually impossible." "The term planetary parade is a colloquial term. It's not an official astronomical one," said Fazekas. "It just simply means that the planets are visible in, generally, the same area of the sky." What equipment do you need to view a planetary parade? Certain planets will only be visible with binoculars or a small telescope. Those interested in purchasing equipment should steer clear of telescopes that cost less than $500 and opt for Celestron, Robert Lunsford, the American Meteor Society's newsletter editor and fireball report coordinator, told USA TODAY. He advises beginners to opt for a telescope with a lens instead of a mirror, and for those seeking a more affordable option, he recommends purchasing a pair of binoculars instead. Scientists Discover Oldest-Known Black Hole In The Universe
Astronomers have discovered the most distant black hole ever confirmed, formed 500 million years after the Big Bang. The breakthrough, led by the Cosmic Frontier Center at UT Austin, offers a rare glimpse into the universe's earliest days. 'This is about as far back as you can go with current technology,' said Anthony Taylor, lead researcher on the discovery. While distant black hole candidates have been found, none have shown the crucial spectroscopic signature for confirmation. The team used data from the James Webb Space Telescope's CAPERS program to identify the hole. CAPERS, focused on distant galaxies, provides unprecedented views of the farthest reaches of the universe. The team is now focused on obtaining higher-resolution data from JWST to learn more about this ancient cosmic object.

The Prototype: AI Tools May Degrade Doctors' Skills
In this week's edition of The Prototype, we look at the risk of depending on AI to 'think' for you, mass-producing satellites, a startup helping NASA avoid space junk, and more. The researchers tested doctors' abilities to find certain abnormalities in patients for three months before using AI, then tested them again after they'd used the tool for three months. They found that doctors' ability to spot those abnormalities on their own degraded after using AI. And while that might not be a big deal a few decades down the road when AI-assisted detections are the norm, it does pose a problem right now, because these tools aren't universal. A doctor accustomed to using AI at one hospital might find their performance declines working at a hospital that hasn't adopted it yet. It also raises larger questions about letting AI do your 'thinking' for you, because what's lost might be more than one particular skill. Studies have shown, for example, that overreliance on GPS for driving could degrade your spatial memory. As we enter a brave new world of AI, it will be increasingly important to not only know how to use it, but also when not to use it. Stay tuned. Apex Wants To Bring Henry Ford-Style Mass Production To Satellites S atellite manufacturing has long been a bespoke business with spacecraft customized for the missions they are sent on. Elevated costs and delays come with the territory. With more and more small satellites being launched into low-Earth orbit, Lost Angeles-based Apex has developed standardized spacecraft it says are a faster and more affordable option. The company is marketing three standardized satellite bodies with power and control systems that can be quickly customized by clients with sensors and payloads. Like, say, weapons to shoot down intercontinental ballistic missiles, as envisioned for President Trump's Golden Dome. Similar to automakers, Apex offers different versions of its satellites, with options like more power, a fancier communications system and a choice between electrical or chemical propulsion. A recent study explored how creativity varies between groups when one has access to the internet and one doesn't. 244 people were divided into small groups with half of them given access to a search engine. The groups were tasked with coming up with as many ideas as possible for using a particular object. One object didn't have many results on Google when searching; the other had many. The researchers found that those who didn't use Google tended to come up with more creative and effective ideas than those who did. What's more, when there were a lot of Google search results, the groups tended to converge on the top answers given rather than coming up with their own creative responses.
