Ramaphosa disputes Trump's 30% tariff claim as 'not accurate'
President Cyril Ramaphosa has contested the United States' justification for imposing a 30% trade tariff on South African goods, describing the percentage as inaccurate and based on a flawed interpretation of trade data.
The dispute emerged after President Donald Trump announced the unilateral tariff imposition in correspondence received by South Africa on Monday.

South Africa was among several countries to receive similar communications from the US administration, signalling a broader shift in American trade policy.

Inmates busted using smuggled cellphones to run scams from prison
Prisoners at Baviaanspoort Correctional Centre were recently busted for using snuck in mobile phones to actively scam members of the public from within their cells.
The scams came to light after National Commissioner Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale led a specialised raid that revealed the criminal network operating in daytime.

The scamming operation relied on a system of hidden mobile phones that inmates had successfully smuggled into the facility.

Health minister weaponising racial bias report to push NHI, says IRR
The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) has accused Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi of using a report into the racial bias of medical aid compliance standards to further his National Health Insurance (NHI) agenda.
The report, compiled by a panel chaired by Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, concluded that medical aid schemes were unfairly discriminating against black practitioners when investigating fraud, waste, and abuse (FWA) claims.

To reach this conclusion, the independent panel relied on an equation devised by a mathematician with a PhD from the University of Cape Town.

Ramaphosa raises limit for private donations to political parties to R30m a year

Picture: Simphiwe Nkosi/EWN CAPE TOWN - President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially raised the limit for private donations to political parties to R30 million a year. He's acted on a resolution taken by the National Assembly in May after a revision of the limit and the threshold for declaring donations by Parliament's home affairs committee. Like the donation limit, the declaration threshold has also been doubled to R200,000. ALSO READ: • Perfecting the political funding arena still a work in progress - IEC • Symposium thrashes out solutions to strengthening political funding law • Godongwana thinks political parties should be wholly funded from national fiscus After removing the R15 million donation limit private donors could make to political parties and independent candidates just before last year's May elections, the Western Cape High Court forced Parliament to reinstate the limit in August last year and for political parties to backdate their declarations to the Electoral Commission until a new limit was set. The original limits were set in 2018 when the National Assembly passed the Political Party Funding Act. In a proclamation published in the government gazette, President Ramaphosa has now determined the new donation limit to be R30 million. All donations more than R200,000 will now also have to be declared. Speaking in the Western Cape last week, the IEC's manager for political funding, George Mahlangu said no party would be off the hook in declaring its donations, and even if below the declaration threshold, parties are expected to record these in their annual financial statements.

Ramaphosa arrives in Tokyo for African Development Summit
JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in Japan to lead South Africa's high-level delegation participation in the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development Summit. The summit will kick off in Yokohama on Wednesday. It's expected to strengthen ties between the African Union and Japan. This includes talks on trade and investment, as well as peace and stability. Ramaphosa said the summit comes when multilateralism and collective solutions to common challenges are crucial. He said the AU's discussions with the government of Japan present an opportunity for the two sides to engage in discussions that seek to foster collective solutions to these challenges. The spokesperson in the presidency, Vincent Magwenya, said, "President Ramaphosa will engage with leading captains of Japanese industry and business. Japan is one of South Africa's major economic partners with sizeable investments in the South African economy, and the potential for further investments exists.'
