Coach Deion Sanders' return to Colorado lifts team spirits after his battle with bladder cancer

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — To Colorado defensive back Carter Stoutmire, Deion Sanders is more than just a coach. He's like an uncle who's been in his life since pretty much the day he was born.
So hearing his coach's booming voice back in meetings and seeing his coach's swagger at camp this week, well, it lifted his spirits. Not just for him, but the entire team in the wake of Sanders announcing news of his private battle with
bladder cancer
.
'Whatever hardship trials he goes through, he always makes it through,' Stoutmire said after practice Wednesday. 'Seeing him back, just a breath of fresh air for the whole team.'
It's been a few months since they've seen their coach after Sanders stepped away to deal with
his health
. He revealed Monday that doctors removed his bladder to ward off an aggressive form of cancer. He had a section of his intestine reconstructed to function as a bladder.
'Honestly, just having Coach Prime's presence back in the building is an amazing feeling,' said safety DJ McKinney, whose team opens the season Aug. 29 against Georgia Tech at Folsom Field. 'I feel like everybody just has a chip on their shoulder.'
Namely, to work as hard they can for him.
'I mean, it hit different for me, just because that's like family to me,' Stoutmire said. 'That was like real, genuine concern.'
Stoutmire's father, Omar, played for the Dallas Cowboys with Sanders in the 1990s. His dad and Sanders have been longtime friends, which is why he considers him an uncle.
'First time I met him? I don't remember — he was in my birth room,' Carter Stoutmire said of Sanders. 'We've just got a whole lot of history, so it's hard to remember the first genuine time I really met him.'
He's had a big impact, too. So much so that Carter Stoutmire was part of Sanders' inaugural high school recruiting class at Colorado.
Asked if his coach's bravado was indeed back at practice, Stoutmire simply responded, 'Oh yeah. Ain't no question about that.'
Upon his return to campus, Sanders tried to pick up right where he left off. Defensive coordinator Robert Livingston said he met with Sanders last week and the first thing Sanders inquired about was Livingston's family. He wanted to know about his son, Luke, who's playing baseball.
Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Famer who also played Major League Baseball, wanted to hear all about it.
'Prime's talking about his stance and all these things, and he wants to know how that's going,' Livingston recounted. 'His leadership is one of one. He's the Pied Piper — the world will follow him if they just listen to him.'
Livingston's first reaction to the news?
'Scared, just like everybody,' he said. 'We're talking about a life here. This football stuff, that doesn't really matter at the end of the day.
'He was away and we were working and just knowing that when he comes back, he's going to hit the ground running. That first staff meeting went about like you thought it would, 'Hey, we're going to do this. We're going to do that.''
Sanders missed a series of camps in Boulder this summer due to his health. His veteran staff, which includes Pat Shurmur, Warren Sapp and Marshall Faulk, held things down.
'The conversation was never had, like 'if, then,'' Livingston said. 'We knew he'd be here day one.'
The Buffaloes are coming off a season in which they went 9-4 and played in the Alamo Bowl. They have big holes to fill with quarterback Shedeur Sanders now part of the Cleveland Browns and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
'When you're a phenomenal leader as Coach Prime is, you establish a culture, a situation where people just go to work,' Livingston said. 'And that's what it was. It was a joy to see.'
Sanders preached checking in with a healthcare provider in his news conference Monday, something that helped him. His cancer was discovered when he went for an annual CT scan as a precaution given his history with blood clots.
It's a message that resonated with Livingston.
'Too often in this profession, we worry about what happens inside these walls more than we worry about what happens outside in being a husband and being a father and taking care of yourself,' Livingston said. 'It's eye-opening for sure.'

Shedeur Sanders Time In Cleveland? Browns To Reportedly Start QB In Preseason Opener

National Football League Shedeur Sanders Time In Cleveland? Browns To Reportedly Start QB In Preseason Opener Published Aug. 5, 2025 5:26 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Shedeur Sanders is the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback … for Week 1 of the preseason. The fifth-round rookie will start in the Browns' preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on Friday, reported. Sanders is also reportedly expected to get first-team reps during Wednesday's joint practice with the Panthers. The Browns' decision to start Sanders in their preseason opener comes as they've been dealing with multiple injuries at quarterback. Kenny Pickett and third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel both recently suffered hamstring injuries, while the Browns plan to sit Joe Flacco for Friday's game. As a result of the recent injuries to Pickett and Gabriel, the Browns signed quarterback Tyler Huntley on Tuesday. If Sanders takes the field with the Browns' starting offense on Wednesday, it'll mark the first time in training camp he's taken first-team reps. He's practiced with the second- and third-team offenses in camp, and he was listed as the fourth-string quarterback when the Browns released their first unofficial depth chart on Monday. Sanders was also briefly sidelined in camp due to injury. He didn't participate in team drills in Saturday's practice because of arm soreness, but was back in team drills for Monday's practice. ADVERTISEMENT While Sanders hasn't played Cleveland's top offensive unit yet, he has gotten some reps against his team's top defensive unit. He took snaps with the second-team offense against the first-team defense in the Browns' practice on July 30, completing 2 of 3 passes. The Browns haven't named a starting quarterback yet. However, the 40-year-old Flacco is viewed as the favorite for the job, receiving the most first-team reps to this point. The fact that he's sitting out the preseason opener might also be an indicator that Flacco is the favorite for the job. As for Sanders, he's likely battling for a roster spot based on his placement on the unofficial depth chart and his practice reps. When sharing why he told his father, Deion Sanders, why he doesn't want him at Browns practice yet, Sanders told reporters that he doesn't feel he's where he needs to be with his play quite yet. "I don't want him coming to see me right now because I want to get to where I want to go, then for him to see me," Sanders told reporters on Monday. "I don't want him to come and see me get a couple reps, and he is cheering like a good dad. Like, nah, you can't be proud of me right now. I got to get to where I'm going, and I know it's a lot I got to do to get there. "It's kind of like I just want everything that I'm doing is just focus on this time, and I don't want no distractions because we know how the media, we know how everybody would take it and take away from the team, just from him being my own dad showing up. So, it is a gift and a curse at the same time." Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Colin Cowherd ridicules Cowboys coach for fashion faux pas

The Dallas Cowboys made one of the more surprising decisions of the offseason NFL coaching carousel cycle. After firing coach Mike McCarthy following a disappointing 7-10 season, Dallas interviewed several candidates before ultimately opting to promote offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to replace his former boss. It remains to be seen how the Cowboys will look on the field in Schottenheimer's first season, but he's already drawing the ire of Fox Sports radio and TV personality Colin Cowherd for his stylistic decisions. Schottenheimer was sporting a backwards visor as he spoke to the media during Dallas' training camp, and Cowherd — who is vocally critical of backwards hats — didn't hold back. "You know I don't like backward hats?" Cowherd said. "What's worse is a backward visor. That's a two-win team. I'm taking away four wins. "So when you sit in front of a podium, you're representing the Cowboys, you're representing Bank of America, you're representing a $12 billion corporation. I think you've got to do better as a head coach than a visor backwards." Schottenheimer isn't the first person Cowherd has criticized for wearing a backwards hat. He's gone on similar rants previously about Carson Wentz and Baker Mayfield, the latter of which masterfully trolled him in return. Cowherd wasn't done with Schottenheimer there, though. "There's a reason that country clubs and private clubs, you have to wear collared shirts and jackets. There's a reason for that. There's a standard. I don't want to look like a guy that's here to move my couch. I want you to do better than that. That's awful. That's so bad." As a franchise that is looking for its first trip to the Super Bowl since its championship in 1996, Cowboys fans almost certainly care more about substance than style when it comes to their new head coach. But as far as first impressions go, it seems Schottenheimer made a bad one on Cowherd.

Tony Romo Makes His Stance On President Trump Very Clear

Tony Romo Makes His Stance On President Trump Very Clear originally appeared on The Spun. With the NFL regular season roughly a month away, it won't be long before fans are talking about Tony Romo's commentary for CBS. Right now though, he's making headlines because of his politics. Romo, who played for the Dallas Cowboys from 2004-2016, has remained a notable figure in the NFL world since his retirement. To be fair, he calls every marquee game for CBS alongside legendary broadcaster Jim Nantz. Back when Romo was on the Cowboys, he received a few encouraging words from Donald Trump. At that time, he wasn't the president of the United States. "The fact that Tony Romo got hurt is a terrible thing for the Dallas Cowboys," Trump said in 2015. "I think Tony's a great guy, I know him and he's also a great football player and it certainly will hurt Dallas." Trump also complimented Romo's skills as a golfer. "I played golf today with a really good golfer: Tony Romo. Do you know Tony Romo?" Trump said. "He may be a better golfer than a football player. I don't know." Despite all the praise that Romo received from Trump, he never really voiced his support for the president. Well, that all changed this month. This past Thursday, Trump signed an executive order to revive the Presidential Fitness Test. He also brought back the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. "The revitalized President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition will create school-based programs to reward excellence in physical education and support the development of a Presidential Fitness Award — working in partnership with athletes, coaches, teams, and schools to champion access to fitness and healthy living for all Americans," the government said. "The Council will also play an important role in restoring tradition to college athletics, including reforming the broken transfer portal and keeping men out of women's sports." Believe it or not, Romo is a member of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Romo isn't the only NFL star forming an alliance with Trump. The President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition also includes Saquon Barkley, Nick Bosa, Harrison Butker, Tua Tagovailoa and Lawrence Taylor. Only time will tell if Romo takes on a bigger role with the Trump Romo Makes His Stance On President Trump Very Clear first appeared on The Spun on Aug 3, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 3, 2025, where it first appeared.
