BYD Seal 06 plug-in hybrid on the cards for Australia after UK launch
Tesla arch-rival BYD will launch the Seal 06 DM-i plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sedan and wagon in the United Kingdom (UK) as the Chinese brand expands its range of right-hand drive models – with the local arm telling CarExpert it's evaluating an Australian launch.
The Chinese car brand will launch the Seal 06 DM-i as a rival to the BMW 3 Series and Skoda Superb – both offered with plug-in hybrid tech in the UK – sometime in 2025, but has not announced prices or exact timing.
It's expected to be priced similarly to the BYD Sealion 6 PHEV SUV currently offered in the UK (sold as the 'Seal-U') at £33,000 ($68,700) – and priced from $42,990 before on-road costs in Australia.
BYD has not yet confirmed the Seal 06 DM-i for local showrooms, but a spokesperson for the automaker told CarExpert the Seal 6 DM-i is under evaluation for Australia in both sedan and wagon body styles.

The sedan was introduced in China in May 2024 boasting a claim of 2100km total driving range and fuel efficiency of 2.5L/100km.
The 20mm longer Seal 6 DM-i wagon – measuring 4850mm on the same 2790mm wheelbase as the sedan – was revealed at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show.
The front-wheel drive sedan/wagon uses the DM-i 5.0 architecture, distinctly different from the e-Platform 3.0 Evo underpinning the rear-wheel drive electric BYD Seal already in Australian showrooms.
The latest gen BYD hybrid tech – badged 'DM-i' which stands for 'Dual Mode-intelligence' – sees the Seal 06 powered by a 74kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The standard configuration uses a 120kW electric motor and 10kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery pack for a claimed 53km of electric driving, with an optional 160kW motor and 16kWh battery extending range to 83km.
The Sealion 6 was the most popular plug-in hybrid in Australia in 2024, with strong competition expected from a new-generation Toyota RAV4 PHEV arriving in 2026.
The Sealion 6 was overtaken by the Ford Ranger -rivalling BYD Shark 6 as the best-selling plug-in hybrid in Australia in the first three months of 2025.
BYD is expanding its hybrid offering globally as changes to upcoming internal combustion engine bans in Europe and the United States (California specifically) may be pushed back.
'Our target is really to have people in daily use using the EV [mode], but then if they want long distance, given a chance to charge, they have the freedom to go to anything,' said BYD executive vice-president, Stella Li.
It joins other car makers such as Honda, Volvo, Porsche and Kia that have switched focus to hybrid vehicles, revising previous electric vehicle sales targets.

BMW X5 to gain range extender EV option
The next-generation BMW X5 will have the option of a range extender EV as this drivetrain continues to gain popularity, especially in China. Range extenders have gained popularity there as they allow for primarily EV operation during regular commutes, and freedom from range anxiety and worrying about charging infrastructure during road trips. According to Autocar, BMW is working with transmission specialist ZF on a range extender setup for the new X5 with a target total range of over 965km (600 miles). Supplied Credit: CarExpert Given the upcoming second-generation X7 will once again be closely related to the new X5, it's no surprise BMW will also add a range extender option to its flagship SUV. The Bavarian automaker is also considering adding range extender drivetrain options to the current X3. The next-generation X5 and X7, as well as the existing X3, are all based on BMW's CLAR architecture, which supports mild hybrid petrol and diesel engines, as well as traditional plug-in hybrid, and pure EV drivetrains. If this report proves to be true, it will be the first time range extender option in a BMW since the demise of the i3 tall-boy hatchback (below). In all i3 models an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack was solely responsible for driving the wheels. For the REx (range extender) variants a 0.65L two-cylinder petrol engine making just 25kW, and a small 9L fuel tank were added to the vehicle. Whenever the i3's battery ran low or hit a preset level, the little petrol engine would sputter to life and recharge the traction battery. We also don't know whether the range extender option will be offered in addition to or as a replacement for the X5's plug-in hybrid setup. In a traditional plug-in hybrid drivetrain, both the electric motor can drive the wheels by itself or in tandem with the petrol engine. The sixth-generation X5 was last spotted by our spy photography agency back in June 2024. Anthony Albanese says Labor will fight ‘frustration' in government and deliver on election promises, in National Press Club address
Anthony Albanese will use his first major speech since winning a second term to promise to fight against growing cynicism and 'frustration' in government. The Prime Minister will put forward his second-term agenda in an address to the National Press Club in Canberra on Tuesday, vowing to 'make a real difference to people's lives'. That includes delivering on Labor's policies to boost bulk-billed GP appointments, decrease student debt and other cost-of-living measures. While he will acknowledge the 'significant global uncertainty' and 'economic instability' currently underpinning the world, he says Labor will be a 'practical and positive alternative' and delivers on its 'vision for a stronger, fairer Australia'. 'It is the more corrosive proposition that politics and government and democratic institutions, including a free media, are incapable of meeting the demands of this moment,' he is expected to say. 'Our responsibility is to disprove it. 'To recognise that some of this frustration is drawn from people's real experience with government – be it failures of service delivery, or falling through the cracks of a particular system. 'To counter this, we have to offer the practical and positive alternative.' Mr Albanese's comments on a volatile international environment comes as he is expected to have his first face-to-face meeting with US President Donald Trump when he travels to Canada for the G7 Leader's Summit over the weekend. Labor faces a heavy policy agenda when parliament finally sits on July 22 for the first time since the May 3 election, with Mr Albanese promising to legislate a 20 per cent discount of student debts as its first priority. Mr Albanese will also highlight Labor's election vow to ensure 90 per cent of GP visits are bulk-billed by 2030, progress on reaching net zero emissions by 2050, and its continued target to build 1.2 million new homes through the Housing Accords as other key areas for 'delivery' in Labor's second term. 'Our second term agenda has been shaped by the lives and priorities of the Australian people. And it is built on Australian values,' he will say. 'It is the mission and the measure of a Labor government to give those enduring ideals of fairness, aspiration and opportunity renewed and deeper meaning, for more Australians. 'To deliver reforms that hold no-one back – and drive progress that leaves no-one behind.' The government will also expand its First Home Guarantee scheme to all first home buyers, regardless of income caps, which allow them to purchase an eligible property with a 5 per cent deposit, while also avoiding lender's mortgage insurance. Labor has also committed to investing $10bn to build 100,000 new homes which will be earmarked for firsthome buyers. Since Labor's election landslide on May 3, it has faced attacks on its plan to bring in a 30 per cent tax on superannuation balances over $3m. While the Greens have already flagged it will work with Labor to most likely pass the tax in the Senate, the Coalition have criticised the policy as a 'grab for revenue'. However Jim Chalmers has rebuked changes to the tax, calling the changes 'modest' and 'methodical,' which will make a 'meaningful difference to the budget'.
