FCS football likely moving to 12 game schedule

Miami Heralda day ago

FCS football programs, including many HBCU schools, are one step closer to expanding their regular-season schedule to 12 games starting in 2026. The NCAA FCS Oversight Committee recently approved a key recommendation that would make the 12-game schedule standard every year.
What's Changing for FCS Football?
Currently, FCS football teams play either 11 or 12 games depending on the calendar. When there are 13 weeks between Labor Day weekend and the FCS playoff selection show - typically aired the Sunday before Thanksgiving - teams are allowed to play 12 games. In years with only 12 weeks, teams play 11.
Under the new proposal, FCS programs would shift to a consistent 13-week schedule. The season would begin annually on the final Thursday in August, giving teams the opportunity to play 12 regular-season games every year.
Why the Change Matters for HBCU football
The committee cited the importance of aligning FCS football with FBS standards. FBS teams have played a consistent 12-game schedule since 2006, regardless of calendar shifts.
"Standardizing the start date and number of contests in FCS football enhances the overall experience and provides FCS football student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in the same number of regular-season contests as FBS football student-athletes, regardless of the calendar year," the committee stated in its report.
Impact on HBCU Football Programs
This change will have a significant impact on HBCU football programs, many of which compete at the FCS level in conferences such as the SWAC and MEAC. These programs often build their schedules around major classics, rivalry games, and revenue-generating matchups against FBS opponents.
A guaranteed 12-game schedule every year could offer more flexibility for:
Scheduling marquee events like the Bayou Classic, Florida Classic, and Magic City ClassicIncreasing revenue opportunities through additional home games or high-profile matchupsEnhancing exposure and recruiting by ensuring more consistent national and regional visibility
This change could also help level the playing field, allowing HBCUs more chances to match the scheduling advantages already enjoyed by FBS and some FCS peers.
What Happens Next?
The final decision will be made at the upcoming NCAA Division I Council meeting next month. Approval is expected, which would make the 12-game FCS football schedule official starting with the 2026 season.

Philadelphia Eagles legends Jackson, Vick to face off in HBCU showdown at Lincoln Financial Field

Two of the most electrifying players in Philadelphia Eagles history will return to Lincoln Financial Field — not as teammates, but as head coaches on opposite sidelines. First year head coaches DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick will go head to head at Lincoln Financial field on Oct. 30 when Jackson's Delaware State Hornets host Vick's Norfolk State Spartans in a high-profile HBCU matchup. Jackson and Vick were both named head coaches following the 2024 season. The Thursday night game between the two Division I programs was announced Thursday in a press release from the Philadelphia Eagles. Delaware State's Athletic Director Tony Tucker called it "a potential paradigm shift for HBCU football." "This is more than just a football game," Tucker said. "It's a celebration of talent, leadership, and a vision for the future of HBCU athletics." The release said tickets are set to go on sale June 17 at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster. "I came to Delaware State University to start a new phase of my career with a unique institution that cares about its students and is helping to transform their futures," Jackson said. "I know Coach Vick feels the same way at Norfolk State." "This is a tremendous opportunity for our student-athletes to play in a world-class venue on a world-class stage," Vick said. "Coach Jackson and I made so many unforgettable memories together at Lincoln Financial Field. This stadium holds a special place in my heart, and I'm thrilled to return for such a historic moment." Dr. Melody Webb, Norfolk State's director of athletics, praised the partnership. "A game of this magnitude deserves a national platform," Webb said. "I commend the Philadelphia Eagles for providing us with an amazing venue for this highly anticipated event. This matchup will highlight the talent and legacy of HBCU football." Both Jackson and Vick are part of a growing wave of former NFL players filling coaching jobs at HBCUs. Jackson's staff features several former NFL players, including former NFL rushing standout Clinton Portis as running backs coach, and Vick's Norfolk State coaching staff features six-year NFL veteran Terence Garvin as defensive coordinator among other former NFL players. Other former NFL players who've recently coached at HBCUs include Terance Mathis at Morehouse College and Philadelphia native Eddie George, who was the head coach of Tennessee State University from 2021 to 2024. Before hiring Jackson, DSU posted a 2-21 record over the past two seasons, while the Spartans haven't had a winning season since 2012 when they went 6-5. Jackson and Vick's bond with Philadelphia runs deep. In 2010, Jackson became the first player in NFL history to earn Pro Bowl honors at two different positions in the same year — wide receiver and punt returner. In that same season, Vick earned the AP Comeback Player of the Year award. The release says HBCUs represent only about 3% of colleges nationwide, but they graduate 40% of Black engineers, half of Black teachers, 70% of Black doctors and dentists, and 80% of Black judges. Delaware State is the only HBCU is Delaware. Pennsylvania is home to the two oldest HBCUs in the county, Cheyney University and Lincoln University of Pennsylvania.

Lions offer 'conservative' timeline on LB Malcolm Rodriguez's return from torn ACL

Lions offer 'conservative' timeline on LB Malcolm Rodriguez's return from torn ACL "Rodrigo" tore his ACL on Thanksgiving, and he might not return to action before that same game in 2025 It's apparently going to be some time before linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez returns to action. Lions head coach Dan Campbell offered a "conservative" timeline for Rodriguez's return to action from a torn ACL suffered late last season. Rodriguez, a key reserve LB and special teams fixture, tore the ACL in his knee on November 28th in the Thanksgiving win over the Chicago Bears. He has been away from the team during the recent OTAs rehabbing from the surgery. Ahead of Thursday's final OTA session, Campbell was asked about "Rodrigo" and his potential timeline to return. 'Yeah. He's not going to be starting the season out (in action)," Campbell stated. "If I - conservatively, November. Or maybe that's - yeah, that's probably the best way to say it. Probably November. Somewhere in there.' That more conservative timeline meshes with what our Dr. Jimmy Liao laid out earlier this offseason. More: Health updates from Dan Campbell's end-of-OTA press conference

Philadelphia Eagles legends to battle as HBCU coaches in stadium

Former Philadelphia Eagles stars Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson are bringing their HBCU squads to their former NFL stadium. Originally slated for Saturday, Nov. 1 at Delaware State's Alumni Stadium, the game will now take place at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30 at Lincoln Financial Field – home to the Philadelphia Eagles. The decision comes after unprecedented anticipation for the matchup between two well-known head coaches – Michael Vick and Desean Jackson. The close friends excelled together as teammates on the Philadelphia Eagles, providing one of the most popular quarterback-wide receiver connections of the 21st century. "While we are both excited about the game, this is more than that," Norfolk State President Javaune Adams-Gaston and Delaware State President Tony Allen said in a joint statement. "It is an opportunity to showcase our talented students on and off the field, as well as the great many faculty, staff, and coaches whose work is a labor of love. The measure of this game's success will be in the light it shines on the power of our HBCU community; we are the best return on investment in higher education." "I came to Delaware State University to start a new phase of my career with a unique institution that cares about its students and is helping to transform their futures," Jackson said. "I know Coach Vick feels the same way at Norfolk State. A part of that transformation is opening our students and scholar athletes up to a whole new set of experiences at the highest level. For our teams to be playing in Philly, at Lincoln Financial Field, on the field Coach Vick and I called home for many years will be special for our players, our coaching staffs, our Alumni and fans, and for HBCU culture around the country." "This is a tremendous opportunity for our student-athletes to play in a world-class venue on a world-class stage," Vick added. "Coach Jackson and I made so many unforgettable memories together at Lincoln Financial Field – this stadium holds special meaning in my NFL career. I am thrilled to be a part of this historic moment and want to thank the Philadelphia Eagles, Norfolk State, and Delaware State for their collaboration to make this happen." Tickets will go on sale at later date. The post Philadelphia Eagles legends to battle as HBCU coaches in stadium appeared first on HBCU Gameday. Copyright HBCU Gameday 2012-2025
