State rocked by 5.6 magnitude quake
Southeast Queensland has been rocked by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake. Geoscience Australia reported the quake at Kilkivan, northwest of the Sunshine Coast, at 9.49am on Saturday. The quake was measured at a magnitude of 5.6 and at as depth of 2km. There had been 28 'felt reports', according to Geoscience Australia. More to come.

Will Tropical Storm Erin Be A Major Swell Event?
The summer doldrums for East Coast surfers seems to be coming to the end with the arrival of the hurricane season thanks to increased storm activity in the Atlantic. Tropical Storm Erin is poised to be the first hurricane of the season as it moves across the ocean and gains steam and wave making energy. It goes without saying that hurricanes are a mixed bag of emotion, we love them for the good to epic swells they can create and also are wary of the extreme destruction that can come with them. It is our hope that Erin proves to be all swell and no fury for any homes throughout the Caribbean and along the East Coast. The storm formed just west of the Cabo Verde islands, off the western coast of Africa, and is moving west with what appears to be a very favorable track. With a bit of luck, Erin will not make landfall but will send barrels and stoke throughout the East Coast. "Early models show that the storm is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane by the time it nears the Caribbean islands and we'll be watching closely to see how things develop." Spots in the Caribbean, like Barbados, are expected to see rideable surf as soon as tomorrow while New England surfers will have to wait until next week when zones like Long Island, New Jersey, and Rhode Island will come to life and break the summer flat spell. Froth levels for the surf-starved are likely through the roof as Erin could be an all time swell maker not just for the East Coast of North America but also for Europe as it refracts back across the Atlantic Basin for our friends across the pond. Potential ‘100 Foot' Waves Headed for U.S. East Coast
It's official: Tropical Storm Erin has been upgraded to Hurricane status. As of Friday, the Category 1 storm (but expected to grow) is moving towards the Caribbean, then it's slated to curve northeast off the United States' East Coast by next week – bringing with it heavy rains, flash flooding, gusty winds, and most likely waves. Regarding the latter, some scientists are predicting potentially huge surf. Speaking to Newsweek, Jean-Raymond Bidlot, senior scientist in ocean modeling at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), said: "The latest forecast does indeed indicate that the largest significant wave height could reach values in excess of 50 feet with an associated most likely largest wave of more than 100 feet.' That' Of course, 100-footers aren't going to be hitting New Smyrna Beach, up to the Outer Banks, and beyond. But there will be swell, that's for sure. Meanwhile other experts, like AccuWeather's lead hurricane expert Alex DaSilva, downplayed the size potential of the waves. Yet still, it's significant. DaSilva said: 'While 100 feet can't be ruled out, I think they would only be possible if the storm become a Category 4 or 5 storm. I think waves near the center of 50-75 feet are much more realistic (assuming a Category 3 storm)."For more regarding the surf from Erin, here's a public advisory statement from NOAA: 'Swells generated by Erin will begin affecting portions of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by this weekend, and will likely spread to the western Atlantic next week. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local weather forecast office.' One thing's for certain, regardless of the superlatives and possible overhype, Erin will bring that familiar dichotomy of destruction and pumping surf, as often associated with East Coast hurricane season. One one hand, there will be waves for those who partake; on the other, there will be damage and danger for others.
