The parenting lesson that Bruce Springsteen says he learned too late
Bruce Springsteen says it took him time to learn the importance of being present with his kids.
During an interview on Wednesday's episode of the "IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson" podcast, the musician spoke about balancing his career with fatherhood.
Springsteen has been married to Patti Scialfa since 1991, and they have three children: Evan, 34; Jessica, 33; and Sam, 31. He credits his wife for teaching him one of the most important parenting lessons.
"And one of the things that Patty taught me was, she says, 'Listen, you can't just be here. You've got to be present,'" Springsteen told Michelle Obama.
The musician said that he used to prioritize his work over spending time with his kids.
"I used to think, 'Well, wait a minute, I got a song to write.' I'm thinking these great thoughts. Come on, you're going to get in the way of my great thoughts, you know?" he said.
But over time, his perspective shifted because he realized that his children were growing up quickly.
"And I learned that if you've got a good song, it's going to be there tomorrow," he said. "But the kids, they're going to be gone."
Childhood is brief, and the time they have to make memories as a family will pass quickly. Even if he remains close to his kids, they have their own lives to lead once they get older, he added.
Springsteen recalled a conversation with his eldest son that made him realize his son had picked up on his own habits of being unavailable.
"Like if I asked him to do something, I had signaled him that I wanted him to say no. If I asked you to do something, it's always 'Maybe later, Dad.' I think I taught him to do that," Springsteen said.
After that incident, he decided to prioritize time with his kids over his work.
"You know, so I realized that parenting is pennies in the bank. It's that time when you were working and you didn't want to stop, but you did," Springsteen said. "That made a huge difference to me because I always felt if I had failed with my kids, I would have failed tremendously in life."
Springsteen isn't the only celebrity who has spoken about the difficulties they faced in balancing their personal and professional lives.
In January, Cameron Diaz, who took a decadelong hiatus from Hollywood, said she spent those 10 years " trying to stay alive just like every other mother."
In May, Michelle Williams said on the "Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard" podcast that balancing her career and motherhood is like figuring out "which master you're going to serve."
A representative for Springsteen did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular hours.

Combs' ex said he sulked after she went to another rapper's sex performance

When Sean "Diddy" Combs learned his girlfriend went to another rapper's freak off, he freaked out, the woman testified. "Jane" — the pseudonym for one of Combs' accusers at his sex-trafficking trial — said on the witness stand this week that Combs sulked and threw a fit after discovering she attended a sex party hosted by another hip-hop star months earlier. In her testimony, Jane said she attended the event, hosted in a Las Vegas hotel room in January 2024, when she believed her relationship with Combs was on a break. Combs' lawyer Teny Geragos revisited the incident while cross-examining Jane on Thursday. "Mr Combs again started saying, 'I can't believe you went outside of us, I can't believe you went to another man's freak off,'" Geragos said, recounting the incident. Jane responded, "Yes." Neither Jane nor any lawyers uttered the name of the other high-profile rapper in open court. On Thursday, Geragos said the rapper was "very close with Mr. Combs" and was "an icon in the music industry." Combs and the other rapper "had an ongoing personal and professional relationship," Geragos said. Jurors were asked about their knowledge of a list of other celebrities who had some connection to the trial. Prosecutors haven't accused any of them of wrongdoing in the case. Jane called them "hotel nights." Combs' attorneys have said that his relationships were consensual and that the sex was part of a "swinger lifestyle." The January 2024 incident in Las Vegas indicates that at least one other celebrity hosted a sex performance, which Jane understood Combs saw as a "lifestyle." Jane said she was invited on the trip while speaking to a friend who is the rapper's cousin. The group was going to Las Vegas to celebrate the birthday of the rapper's girlfriend, and she joined them on his private plane, she said. After they landed, the group went out to play and to a celebratory dinner, she said. To Jane's surprise, another person at the dinner was a man named Antoine, with whom she had sex during Combs-arranged freak offs, she said. After a post-dinner trip to a strip club, the unnamed rapper invited Jane to a hotel room, she said. There, she saw Antoine having sex with another woman on a bed while a small group of people watched, she said. The rapper's girlfriend was also present at the sexual performance, she said. "I remember I walked in and Antoine was having sex with a woman, and everybody was watching," she testified. Jane said she and the rapper engaged in "a little flirtatious banter" and that she left after 20 minutes. "He said something along the lines of that that he thought I was beautiful, and he always wanted to blank me," Jane said Thursday, censoring herself. Jane said she and Combs were "on a break" and it was "unnecessary" to tell him about the incident. Combs learned about anyway it in June of that year, she said. The two were spending time with each other again and had invited Antoine to her home for another sexual performance. Jane testified that the two had gotten into a heated argument with each other earlier, yelling and throwing objects at each other, and that Combs physically beat her multiple times. "A woman's power does not override a man's," Jane testified Thursday. After that fight, Combs saw text messages on her phone referencing the Las Vegas sex performance involving the other rapper, she said. As Antoine was arriving, Jane told Combs about the event, she said. He felt betrayed, as Jane described it. "I feel like his heart sank. And he just was like 'I can't believe what you're telling me right now,'" Jane said. "Like, 'Do you have this porn star having something over on me? Did you just cheat on me? Did you just slip away from us?" Combs pulled her into the bathroom and handed her a pill of ecstasy, she said. "I remember him opening his hand with a pill in it, and he said take this fucking pill. Take this fucking pill. You're not going to ruin my fucking night," she said, quoting Combs. Jane said that after she had sex with Antoine while Combs watched, Combs remained emotionally distant. She said the moments after freak offs were when she and Combs could "connect" and "cuddle" with each other. But that night, Combs remained upset about the Las Vegas sex performance and considered it cheating. "He just said, like, 'I can't believe you cheated on me, I can't believe you went outside of us,'" she said. Jane said Combs believed it was a violation within the "lifestyle" for her to attend another man's sex performance. "I understood that he was trying to reference that we were part of some sort of lifestyle and that I betrayed him by being a part of someone else's lifestyle moment, this porn type of thing," she testified Monday.

'Sunday Love,' a Bruce Springsteen ballad that's premiering today that's officially coming out as part of the Tracks II: The Lost Albums box set, finds the singer-songwriter in crooner mode. With horns and strings, the song recalls the best of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's melodramatic production, while the way his vocal performance flirts lightly with the swinging drums suggests he was interested in Jimmy Webb western pastiche while writing it. 'Each night I pray, each night I pray to God above,' Springsteen sings, 'I never had a Sunday love.' (It also sounds a little like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.) The E Street Band's Max Weinberg, Patti Scialfa, and Soozie Tyrell back Springsteen up on the song. Other contributors include as producer Ron Aniello and Western Stars collaborators Kaveh Rastegar and Scott Tibbs. 'At one time it was either a double record [with Western Stars] or they were part of the same record,' Springsteen said of the song. 'I love Burt Bacharach and I love those kinds of songs and those kinds of songwriters. I took a swing at it because the chordal structures and everything are much more complicated, which was fun for me to pull off. All this stuff could have come right off of those Sixties albums.' Springsteen previously released a song 'Repo Man,' from the box set. That country-rock song appears on Somewhere North of Nashville, the album's fourth disc, which he recorded at the same time as 1995's The Ghost of Tom Joad. Rolling Stone's latest cover star Sabrina Carpenter told the magazine that female artists are under more scrutiny than ever. The interview landed the day after the singer announced her new album "Man's Best Friend," alongside its suggestive artwork featuring Carpenter on her knees as a man grabs her hair. Though the cover fist the singer's brand — she is known for wearing risque outfits and playfully leaning into her sexuality — it still sparked debate online, with some accusing the singer of degrading herself. Representatives for Carpenter did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the Rolling Stone interview, Carpenter addressed her reputation of being overly sexual. "I don't want to be pessimistic, but I truly feel like I've never lived in a time where women have been picked apart more, and scrutinized in every capacity," she said. "We just have to grow thicker skin, but they don't have to learn how to shut their mouths," Carpenter added. Addressing criticism that her shows — in which she acts out sex positions — are too sexual, she said: "They're like, 'All she does is sing about this.' But those are the songs that you've made popular. Clearly you love sex. You're obsessed with it. It's in my show. "There's so many more moments than the 'Juno' positions, but those are the ones you post every night and comment on. I can't control that." Carpenter joins a long list of female celebrities who have been criticized for making sexuality central to their brand. In 2024, Carpenter told Time stars such as Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, and Britney Spears, paved the way for her career. "But you'll still get the occasional mother that has a strong opinion on how you should be dressing," Carpenter said. "And to that I just say, don't come to the show and that's OK." Carpenter told Rolling Stone that she looks up to Dolly Parton, with whom she collaborated on a duet version of her 2024 single "Please Please Please," as an example for dealing with public scrutiny. "She's always dealt with it with wit and humor," Carpenter said.
