Cornish surgeon who had legs amputated accused of falsely claiming he had sepsis
A vascular surgeon from Truro who carried out hundreds of amputation operations before having his own legs removed has been charged with fraud. Neil Hopper, 49, who worked for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust for 10 years until 2023, claimed his leg injuries were the result of sepsis. He has also been charged with encouraging someone else to remove the body parts of others. Hopper is due before Magistrates in Bodmin on Wednesday accused of two counts of fraud by false representation, and a charge of encouraging or assisting in the commission of an indictable-only offence, namely grievous bodily harm. It is alleged that on dates between June 3 and June 26 2019, Hopper dishonestly made a false representation to insurers claiming that his leg injuries were the 'result of sepsis and were not self-inflicted'. It is also alleged that between 21 August 2018 and 4 December 2020, Hopper bought videos from The EunuchMaker website showing the removal of limbs, which 'encouraged Marius Gustavson to remove body parts of third parties'. Hopper has not worked at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust since March 2023. The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service's interim orders tribunal placed restrictions on his practice the following month while the General Medical Council investigated, and he has been suspended from the medical register since December 2023. A Devon and Cornwall Police spokeswoman said: 'The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, where Mr Hopper has been employed, has worked closely with Devon and Cornwall Police throughout the investigation.' A hospital trust spokesman added: 'The charges do not relate to Mr Hopper's professional conduct and there has been no evidence to suggest any risk to patients. 'Mr Hopper worked at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals from 2013 until he was suspended from duty in March 2023, following his initial arrest.

Chinese actor Zhang Yiyang reportedly executed for murder of teenage girlfriend
Chinese actor and singer Zhang Yiyang was reportedly executed last year for murdering his teenage girlfriend in 2022. He is the first known entertainer in mainland China to be executed for such a crime, Channel News Asia reported. According to records from the Intermediate People's Court of Xianyang City in Shaanxi province, Zhang, then 30, lured his 16-year-old girlfriend into a remote forest near Xingping City under the pretence of a birthday celebration on 26 February 2022. They had a dispute and Zhang attacked her with a folding knife, killing her. Zhang allegedly attempted to conceal his crime by disposing of his clothes and the victim's phone in a reservoir and then checked into a hotel intending to take his own life. Hotel staff intervened and alerted authorities, who arrested him soon afterwards. Zhang had started dating the victim in September 2021, according to The Standard, and reportedly coerced her through their relationship by threatening to die by suicide when she wanted to break up. A local court handed down the death sentence to Zhang which he appealed. The sentence was upheld, however, and the actor was executed about six months later on 18 December 2024, Channel News Asia reported, citing court statements. After local media began reporting on Zhang's case, commentators on social media platforms such as Weibo and Douban expressed both anger and shock at the brutality of the crime and the lack of a formal industry response. In particular, commentators were upset with the entertainment industry for the continued availability of Zhang's works, including The Sound of Music, a film also known as Jieyou Sound Hall which premiered in March 2025. Zhang, unlike other celebrities implicated in misconduct, has not been added to China 's official 'bad artist' blacklist nor have his works been removed from streaming platforms. Zhang, born 1 May 1990 in Xingping, started his career by appearing on a reality TV show in 2012 and went on to release songs such as 'I Only Care About People Who Care About Me' and 'Crying Man' and hold minor acting roles in webseries and low‑profile TV shows.

Murder victim's brother welcomes apology personally delivered by PSNI chief
A terminally ill man has welcomed the personal delivery of an apology by the chief constable over police failings following the murder of his brother. It describes Paul Thompson's murder as 'tragic and senseless', and pays tribute to his brother and mother Margaret, who has since died, for 'great courage and resilience in their journey for the truth about his murder'. 'That dedicated action may have prevented Paul's murder,' the apology states. It also acknowledges the original police investigation did not identify or pursue all lines of inquiry and significant disclosure delays at the inquest. 'The police service apologises unreservedly to Eugene for the above failings on the part of policing which impacted adversely both on the delivery of justice for Paul and on his family's quest for the truth,' it said.
