Wild moment teenager who 'stole taxi' crashes on road spikes - before cop performs a dramatic takedown

Dramatic footage has captured the moment police used road spikes to apprehend the 17-year-old driver of an allegedly stolen taxi during a high-speed chase.
Queensland Police allege the teenager broke into multiple Cairns homes across Edmonton, Mount Sheridan and Woree in the early hours of Monday morning.
The Mooroobool boy, who police said is a well-known youth offender, is alleged to have first stolen a Mitsubishi Outlander from a Savage Close address about 11.15am.
He allegedly abandoned that vehicle after driving over police spikes on Links Drive before he stole a nearby Toyota Camry taxi after forcibly removing its driver.
The 59-year-old taxi driver suffered a minor back injury and was taken to Cairns Hospital for treatment.
The teenager then allegedly drove the taxi dangerously around Cairns before hitting a second set of road spikes on nearby Mayers Street at around 11.35am.
In footage obtained by Seven News, an officer could be seen hiding behind a boat parked on a suburban road before he threw the spikes across both lanes.
The teenager attempted to avoid the spikes, but clipped the edge and crashed into a parked Hyundai, sending the unoccupied vehicle careening out of frame of the camera.
The officer who deployed the spikes could then be heard repeatedly yelling for the boy to get out of the vehicle.
Moments later, the teenager exited the crumpled vehicle and was tackled to the ground by the officer, and a struggle ensues before he restrained him.
'Get your f***-ing hands behind your back c***,' the officer shouted.
'Do not f***ing move.'
A second officer arrived to assist, and the teenager was placed under arrest as emergency vehicles converged on the scene.
The 17-year-old was charged with two counts each of attempted enter dwelling with intent, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a vehicle whilst adversely affected and speeding more than 40km/h and one count of robbery.
He was refused bail and appeared in Cairns Children's Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to unlawful entry, unlawful use of motor vehicle, dangerous driving while intoxicated and attempted unlawful entry, the Courier-Mail reported.
A local businesswoman Gillian Tap claimed her daughter was almost hit by the runaway taxi when it ran a red light.
'If she was seconds quicker she could have been killed. She was shaken up from it, this is just terrible,' she said.
The boy is expected to be sentenced for non-indictable offences on July 15 while more serious offences will be dealt with by way of committal mention.
No application for bail was made.
He was treated at Cairns Hospital for a minor head injury.

How mum of murdered teen is keeping her spirit alive as search for her remains continues

A mother continues to drive a car covered in posters and images dedicated to her missing daughter, 12 years after the young woman vanished. Leisl Smith, 23, was last seen on August 19, 2012, getting into a car at Tuggerah, on the NSW Central Coast, before she was never seen or heard from again. Her former on-and-off boyfriend, James Scott Church, 48, was arrested in 2019 and charged with her murder. Police alleged he lured her into a car and disposed of her body at an unknown location. Church pleaded not guilty before taking his own life in custody in 2022 and criminal proceedings were discontinued. An inquest is ongoing. Ms Smith's mother, Sandi Harvey, said a dozen years on from her daughter's disappearance, she has been driving across NSW and Victoria in the decorated silver hatchback in the desperate hope that it will lead to new information. The car has been adorned with a large image of a dragon, Ms Smith's missing persons poster, and the words 'find Leisl Smith' since the day her daughter disappeared. 'I hope that somebody sees it and goes, 'Oh, I remember hearing something about that', or, 'I remember somebody told me something',' Ms Harvey told Ben Fordham on 2GB. 'And they can get in touch with either the Wyong police or Crime Stoppers and let them know... because not knowing is the worst thing ever.' Ms Harvey also distributes business cards and staples missing person posters to trees in an effort to raise awareness She said Church's death had left her without answers. 'It was just devastating. Absolutely devastating,' she said. 'You know, part of my heart is missing. Although she was living with her father, she's still my daughter.' Ms Harvey said the moment Ms Smith's accused killer died was like 'a hole opened up' and she fell through it. 'Unfortunately, or fortunately for some, innocent until proving guilty, and that's not good enough for me because I know the evidence and I know in my mind,' she said. She said the coronial inquest had provided some information on Church's previous abuses of women. 'When I look at that and look at what my daughter was subjected to, it was definitely a domestic violence situation,' she said. 'Part of my heart is missing, although she was living with her father she was still my daughter. She was just a lovely girl, she loved animals, she was looking forward to the birth of her foal, she's just, she's just not there anymore.' When Church was first arrested in 2018, police said he had been a person of interest since he was first questioned by detectives in April 2013. His home, and four others linked to him bordering the Golden Highway in Merriwa in the Hunter Valley, were searched by cadaver dogs and some items seized but no body found. Police gave no indication of why they waited so long to charge him. Ms Harvey at the time said officers told her the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions reviewed the case and said there was enough evidence to charge him. 'Police have kept information very close to their chest the whole time, which is infuriating but I understand,' she said. Leisl's father Storm Smith had also previously criticised the police investigation. Church's home, and four others linked to him bordering the Golden Highway in Merriwa in the Hunter Valley, were searched by cadaver dogs (above) but no body was found 'I don't think the truth will ever come out. When they find the body, I'll believe there's hope,' he told Daily Mail Australia. Leisl was last seen on CCTV leaving her car at Tuggerah Railway Station that night, before getting into a white ute, owned by Church, and driving away. Her Honda Accord was found abandoned at the station car park on September 26, 2012. Anyone with information has been told to contact Wyong Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

EXCLUSIVE Cops reveal fresh charges over 17-year-old girl's alleged western Sydney gang rape ordeal at Wheat Park, Sadleir - as Adam Abdul-Hamid launches Supreme Court bid

More than a week after it was first revealed four teenagers had been charged with the gang rape of a 17-year-old, a clearer picture is emerging of what was allegedly done to the girl. News that four teens, then aged 14, 16, 17 and 18, had been accused of repeatedly violating the girl in a six-hour rampage across south-western Sydney last year horrified Australians. But the number of charges the alleged 'Wheat Park gang rapists' are facing is higher than originally disclosed and the details of their alleged crimes are even worse than first understood. Wheat Park at Sadleir is about 5km from where police say the girl's nightmare began at Liverpool's Westfield shopping centre, and where many of the alleged sexual assaults occurred. It is also where she was allegedly abandoned when the attacks were finally over. Adam Abdul-Hamid is the only one of the accused rapists who can be named because the three others were juveniles at the time the alleged outrage occurred. Daily Mail Australia can reveal Abdul-Hamid has lodged an application seeking bail in the NSW Supreme Court, seeking to overturn a magistrate's decision to keep him locked up. All four accused gang rapists have had birthdays since the girl reported being attacked in December and are now aged 15, 17, 18 and 19. Daily Mail Australia will use their ages at the time of the alleged rapes and call them Teen 14, Teen 16 and Teen 17. When police issued a press release on June 17 they referred to the four teenagers facing a total of 48 charges but that total number is now 69. Abdul-Hamid is charged with the fewest offences: five counts of aggravated sexual assault in company and maintains his innocence. Teen 17 is charged with nine counts of the same offence. Teen 16 is charged with 34 offences including 18 counts of aggravated sexual assault in company and two counts of aggravated sexual assault in company causing actual bodily harm. He is further charged with nine counts of sexual intercourse without consent, four counts of sexually touching a person without consent and one aggravated sexual touching offence. Teen 14 - the youngest alleged rapist - is charged with 21 offences including 18 counts of aggravated sexual assault in company, and one of aggravated sexual assault in company causing actual bodily harm. He is further charged with one count each of aggravated sexual touching of a person without consent and sexual touching. Abdul-Hamid and Teen 17 both faced court on Tuesday when submissions made during their unsuccessful bail applications exposed more information about their alleged roles. Police have previously said Teen 16 approached the 17-year-old, who was not known to him, at Westfield Liverpool about 5.30pm on December 15. Teen 16 allegedly followed the girl to her car and she reluctantly let him aside before he began sexually assaulting her. A short time later, Teen 16 allegedly asked to be driven to Wheat Park and the girl agreed on the understanding he would get out of the car when they arrived. At Wheat Park, two of the other teens allegedly got into the car and sexually assaulted the girl. The fourth teen arrived in another vehicle and the sexual assaults allegedly continued as the girl was driven around. Police allege the teens eventually left the girl in her car and about 11.30pm she contacted a friend who took her to Liverpool police station. It is alleged snippets of video were recorded while the girl was being driven through the suburbs of Sadleir and Miller while she was assaulted. Teen 16 was arrested five days later, about 7.20am on December 20, at a home in Condell Park. About 15 minutes later, Teen 14 was arrested at a home in Miller. Six months later, about 6am on June 17, police simultaneously executed search warrants in south-west Sydney, arresting Teen 17 in Sadleir and Abdul-Hamid in Heckenberg. When Abdul-Hamid appeared at Campbelltown Local Court on Tuesday, DPP solicitor Abby van der Velde said he had been the only adult present during a 'prolonged and sustained sexual assault'. She told the court the barber shop employee had not tried to intervene and had taken the girl's phone to send himself a text message. Barrister Troy Edwards SC said the case against Abdul-Hamid was 'weak' and there was no evidence his client had agreed to participate in the alleged crimes. According to a police statement of facts tendered in court, Abdul-Hamid had been asked, 'Do you want to have a turn?' and replied, 'No, I'm all right.' Two of the charges Abdul-Hamid is facing involve the alleged use of a hairbrush. Mr Edwards told magistrate Peter Thompson the onus was on prosecutors to prove Abdul-Hamid was part of a joint criminal enterprise. When Teen 17 appeared in Parramatta Children's Court later in the day he was also represented by Mr Edwards, with Ms van der Velde again acting as prosecutor. Ms van der Velde said Teen 17 had been with Teen 16 when the girl was first approached at Westfield Liverpool and had later engaged in 'quite serious assaults'. Asked by magistrate Rosheehan O'Meagher about the strength of the Crown case against Teen 17, Mr Edwards said: 'It's not submitted it's a weak prosecution case.' Mr Edwards said the strength of the prosecution case depended in part on whether the person seen with Teen 16 at Liverpool Westfield was the same person who later assaulted the girl. Ms O'Meagher said the case against Teen 17 appeared 'strong' and if the rape allegations were proven he had been 'well and truly involved, in my view, including in some of the more serious offending'. Abdul-Hamid and Teen 17, both of whom have clean criminal records, were refused bail. Detective Superintendent Doherty told 2GB's Ben Fordham last week the age of the teens accused of the pack rape 'beggars belief'. Abdul-Hamid will return to court on August 13. Teen 16, Teen 14 and Teen 17 will face court on August 11.

Gang of wayward youths caught on camera destroying local restaurant

A devastated shopkeeper has revealed the grim reality of being terrorised by eshays for year after year, as damning new footage emerges of the teenage gangs in action. Tasmanian business owner Sam Fu, who owns Bento Glenorchy in Hobart, revealed how he had been targeted in repeated attacks on his premises in recent years. The attacks have seen booths in his restaurant wrecked by the young hoodlums who then tried to set a bathroom on fire using hand sanitiser and toilet paper, and frequently smash his front window. In another incident in the town, an elderly woman in a wheelchair was pushed down an escalator by the teenage thugs, who locals say are armed with tasers, knives, hammers and screwdrivers. Even buses aren't safe from the lawless reign of terror, with drivers now instructed not to accept cash after repeated hold-ups for the petty sums they carried. The nightmare has now seen some locals take matters into their own hands, with one resident punching one of the kids in the face - but locals face the wrath of the courts if they fight back. Mr Fu's shocking video footage showed several teenagers storming his Japanese restaurant on several occasions to menace his young female staff. The out-of-control teens were seen fighting and vandalising a booth at the back of the diner, stealing drinks and hurling abuse and even a wooden spoon at staff. The footage showed one child carrying a long stick - which appeared to be a broomstick handle - concealed down the leg of his jogger pants. Mr Fu also shared pictures of an incident in which one local youth destroyed his bathroom when they set alight hand sanitiser and toilet paper. The shocking images come after Daily Mail Australia revealed that Glenorchy, just north of Hobart's CBD, is besieged by youth eshay gangs. The subculture is characterised by groups of boys and young men who revel in their anti-social behaviour, crossbody bags, and distinctive hairstyles and fashion. Glenorchy eshays appear to especially enjoy harassing vulnerable people including women, girls, the elderly, and shopkeepers. Locals are living in fear of the children, some as young as ten, with one child recently suspected of carrying a stun gun. Another recounted how an elderly wheelchair-bound woman suffering from multiple sclerosis was pushed down an escalator in the local shopping mall. The terrifying incident left her in hospital for weeks recovering from severe injuries. The youths congregate within Glenorchy's town square and bus mall, and in recent days bus drivers have been told not to carry money in their drawers or accept cash fares to reduce the risk of the kids trying to steal the loose change. Security patrols the area, with checks increasing from 3pm when most of the problematic behaviour begins. Mr Fu is so sick of the kids destroying his business that he shared the CCTV footage with Daily Mail Australia to bring national attention to the town's eshay siege. In many videos, he can be seen attempting to reason with the youths but to no avail. Particularly harrowing footage showed several eshays brawling in a red booth at the rear of his premises, resulting in damaged chairs and wallpaper. He has removed several booths after years of vandalism, and revealed he has to frequently replace his glass windows after kids smash them. 'The windows cost $800 to replace every time, and it has driven the insurance premiums up,' he said. Sam revealed that in 2022, 'a kid went into the toilet and put hand sanitiser on toilet paper and lit it up'. It resulted in huge damage to the bathroom, which was blackened with smoke. The fearless eshays play up to their notoriety, and are often heard gleefully telling local security guards that they 'can't touch them'. One fed-up patron of Bento Glenorchy recently retaliated against the vandals. 'One of the kids here was being a nuisance, so a man punched him,' Sam said. A local council worker, who asked not to be named, said other locals have been taking matters into their own hands. 'The little buggers will steal things, make a mess, and laugh at security guards because [the kids] know they can't do anything,' said the source. 'As soon as the guards put their hands on the kids, they shout about 'child abuse'. 'But one day a member of the public was in the food court watching this and he said, 'They might not be able to do anything, but I can'. And he punched the kid. 'It's not good. Innocent people are going to get hurt.' Local worker Tina, 52, said she fears for her safety when she knocks off from work and needs to catch a bus home. She said the young people approach her in the bus mall and ask for money or cigarettes. On one occasion, they asked if they could come home with her and attempted to board her bus home. On Monday, a group of young boys were heard screaming vile comments at passing teenage girls, calling them 's***s'. Some locals were quick to note that things had improved 'slightly' recently, due in part to the cooler winter weather keeping kids indoors, but also a recently launched Tasmania Police taskforce. Taskforce Respect is a new community campaign involving high-visibility patrols in Glenorchy. Inspector Jason Klug said officers are targeting recidivist offenders and anti-social behaviour, with police data showing just 57 people made up 50 per cent of youth crime charges across the state in 2024. 'Our message to these people is simple - if you are offending in the Glenorchy area, then we will be looking out for you,' Inspector Klug said. 'Our aim is to ensure a safer, more welcoming environment for businesses, residents and visitors.'
