UP to cover 90% loan in new goat rearing scheme for SC families

Lucknow: The UP govt on Wednesday introduced a goat rearing scheme under which scheduled caste farmers can avail themselves of the benefits. In every district of the state, 10 families will be shortlisted and provided with a subsidy to rear five female goats and one buck. Out of the estimated expenditure of Rs 60,000, which will be spent on buying the livestock and getting them insured and vaccinated, the state will provide Rs 54,000 to the beneficiaries. Rolled out by the animal husbandry department, the scheme has been launched under the national livelihood mission and is expected to generate additional revenue streams for the marginalised classes. Out of the budget of Rs 4.5 crore earmarked for the 2025-26 financial year, 90% of the cost will be borne by the state govt (Rs 4.05 crore). Officials said that preference will be given to landless farm labourers, those with small land holdings, widows and individuals suffering from extreme poverty. Special secretary Devendra Kumar Pandey said that Rs 10,000 will be earmarked for buying a buck, while Rs 9,000 will be spent on buying a female goat. Those who gained training from govt-run institutes to rear livestock will also be roped in as volunteers or trainers in the initial phase to support the selected families with no experience in rearing animals. Individuals with disabilities will have a 3% reservation. A district-level committee, under the chairmanship of the chief development officer, will shortlist the eligible families and individuals.
