Jets Look To End Three Game Slide Against The Flyers

Jets Look To End Three Game Slide Against The Flyers

Yahoo06-03-2025

The Winnipeg Jets will take on the Philadelphia Flyers tonight as they look to end their three-game losing streak.
The Jets' offence has struggled as of late, scoring two or fewer goals in four of their last five games. Their three losses have been by one goal in each game, losing in a shootout against the Flyers on Saturday.
One bright spot against the New York Islanders on Tuesday was the power play coming alive. Both goals came from the top unit, ending a long drought. Unfortunately, the 5-on-5 offence couldn't generate enough scoring chances in a tight-checking game, ultimately resulting in a 3-2 loss.
The Flyers have been inconsistent since returning from the 4 Nations Face-Off break, looking strong against the Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins before blowout losses to the Penguins and Calgary Flames. In the middle of those games was the 2-1 shootout triumph.
Consistent hockey at all three levels will be the key tonight for the Jets. John Tortorella expects his teams to be defensively sound and difficult to play against. Starting the game slow against the Flyers is a recipe for disaster and makes picking up the two points extremely difficult.
Eric Comrie will get the start tonight against Samuel Ersson. Comrie has been stringing together multiple quality starts and is deserving of the extra ice time. Rasmus Kupari has been placed in the concussion protocol and will be replaced by David Gustafsson. Dylan Samberg will also return to the lineup after missing Tuesday's affair due to "family reasons." Haydn Fleury will be a healthy scratch once again.

The Jets' history that brings hope for a strong Aaron Glenn Year 1

Aaron Glenn doesn't blink in the face of history: The Jets' suffocating 14-year playoff drought, that agonizing 56-year-and-counting Super Bowl drought. His mission from Day 1 has been rallying a shell-shocked franchise to believe with him that they are the Freakin' New York Jets, and they're built for this. The laser-focused Glenn will only put stock in the here and now and doesn't give a damn about what happens in Pittsburgh or anywhere else outside Florham Park, but he should be heartened to know that there is history on his side as well. Every rookie coach arrives talking about sustained success, and too many of them fail. But it doesn't preclude catching lightning in a bottle as a novice.

Jets' Jermaine Johnson embracing high expectations for injury return — with Aaron Rodgers bonus

Jermaine Johnson was texting former teammate Aaron Rodgers on Monday night. Johnson would not say if the two discussed Week 1, when Rodgers will lead the Steelers into MetLife Stadium to face the Jets. Advertisement But he acknowledged that he can't wait to face him. For Johnson, it will mean more than just getting a chance to sack Rodgers. It will be his first game back after tearing his right Achilles tendon in Week 2 last season. 'Obviously, I'm excited. He's excited. It was a pleasure having Aaron around. I wish him the best,' Johnson said. 'When I get between those lines, there's no friends. I think he knows that and he feels the same. I'm excited. It's just another game, but for me it's going to be my first game back. There's going to be a lot of emotions. When my emotions run high, I tend to play pretty well.' Advertisement Johnson's locker was near Rodgers' in the Jets locker room in Florham Park. Rodgers often held court at his locker and Johnson was one of the players who often was hanging with him. When Johnson tore his Achilles last September, it was Rodgers who gave him advice after dealing with the same injury the year before. 4 Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson talks to the media at minicamp in Florham Park. Bill Kostroun/New York Post That was the beginning of the long road back for Johnson. On Tuesday, Johnson was on a side field with trainers, pulling a weighted sled behind him as his teammates opened up their three-day minicamp. Advertisement The Jets expect Johnson to return at some point in training camp and definitely in time for the regular season. Johnson said he's learned about himself during this process. 'I learned that I'm a pretty good handyman,' Johnson joked. 'I don't got to pay somebody from Task Rabbit to do things around the house anymore.' Then, Johnson really answered the question. 'I've always been pretty good at patience,' Johnson said. 'You all know it, it wasn't the easiest or shortest ride getting here. It was just another thing. I've never been seriously injured. Oddly enough, it added some confidence to me. I would always see guys get season-ending injuries and be like, 'Dang, I don't know if I've got what it takes to do that.' Now, going through it, it's like obviously I do. I just feel so confident right now.' Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post The Jets are counting on Johnson to return to his pre-injury form. He had 7.5 sacks and made the Pro Bowl in 2023. He was expected to be a big piece of the 2024 defense, then the injury happened. New Jets coach Aaron Glenn is familiar with Johnson, having coached him in the 2022 Senior Bowl. 'There's things that stand out going back to college and even at the Senior Bowl when I had a chance to coach him then,' Glenn said. 'He's a hard-nosed, physical, violent player that's very athletic, that has the ability to win off the edge and make plays on the quarterback. Listen, you don't get a lot of guys that has the athleticism that he does but still be strong and powerful to hold up against the run. I'm excited to see that player get out there in training camp and going into the first game. He's going to be a huge part of what we're doing.' 4 Quarterback Aaron Rodgers of the Pittsburgh Steelers participates during mandatory minicamp at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on June 10, 2025. Bill Kostroun/New York Post The new Jets regime showed its belief in Johnson when it picked up his fifth-year option this spring. That guarantees him $13.4 million in 2026 if the Jets and Johnson don't agree to a long-term deal before then. 'It's a big investment,' Johnson said. 'They've seen enough of me and heard enough about me that they're willing to dive into that for at least one more year. It means a lot to me. I'm always a man of my word and a man of honor. To me, that's them lifting their end of the cup and now it's my turn to lift my end of the cup.'

Oddsmakers apparently priced in Aaron Rodgers long-rumored Steelers signing. After months of flirtation between the two sides, Pittsburgh's Super Bowl odds stayed the same despite bringing in the future Hall of Fame quarterback over the weekend. Before officially signing Rodgers, the Steelers were +4500 to win the Lombardi Trophy at BetMGM Sportsbook, the 17th-best odds in the league. That number didn't budge after finally landing their starting signal-caller, suggesting Vegas bookies assumed all along the ex-Jets QB was heading to Pittsburgh. The Steelers are once again being priced as a middle-of-the-pack team heading into the season. BetMGM has their win total at 8.5 with the juice on the under, implying that Pittsburgh could be headed for their first losing season in the Mike Tomlin era. They are +145 to make the playoffs and a +600 long shot to win the AFC North. Getty Images The Steelers are hoping Rodgers can get them over the hump of a near-decade of playoff incompetence. The franchise has lost six straight postseason games, including a wild-card round loss in four of the last five seasons. Rodgers heads to Pittsburgh after a disappointing 2024 season for the 5-12 Jets, during which he threw for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Betting on the NFL? He replaces Russell Wilson, who is expected to take the starting job with the Giants. Rodgers will throw to a revamped receiving corps after the Steelers traded for star pass-catcher D.K. Metcalf and dealt away George Pickens to the Cowboys.
