Eleven from Rajasthan among victims of Air India crash after take-off from Ahmedabad
Eleven persons from Rajasthan were among the passengers on board the Air India flight that crashed shortly after take-off from the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday (June 12, 2025). The victims from the State included five members of a physician's family from Banswara, who were relocating to London.
Software professional Pratik Joshi and his physician wife Komi Vyas were travelling to London with their three children on the ill-fated flight. Dr. Vyas had recently resigned from a private hospital in Udaipur, intending to begin medical practice in London and reside with her husband, who had moved there in 2016.
Two siblings, Shubh Modi and Shagun Modi, from the family of a marble businessman in Udaipur, were also among the passengers. After completing their business administration studies, the two had joined their father's business. They were travelling to London for leisure.
Udaipur Collector Namit Mehta visited their residence in the city to meet the family. Mr. Mehta said Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma had enquired about the victims and assured the family of all possible support.
In a statement, Mr. Sharma said Rajasthan, being a neighbouring State, was ready to provide all possible assistance to the Gujarat government in this hour of grief. He also expressed condolences on the death of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in the plane crash. Mr. Sharma spoke to the families of the victims from Rajasthan over the telephone and consoled them. The district administration, which remained in touch with the bereaved families, ensured all possible help.
Two other passengers from Udaipur district, Vardhichand Menaria and Prakash Menaria, employed in the culinary sector in the United Kingdom, had returned to India on holiday. They were en route to London to resume work.
Abhinav Parihar from Bikaner and Khushboo Rajpurohit from Balotra were also among those on board.
Governor Haribhau Bagade, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, and Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani expressed grief over the deaths.
As a mark of respect for the deceased, both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Opposition Congress suspended their scheduled programmes until further notice. The BJP had planned political events including rallies and press conferences to mark 11 years of the Narendra Modi government, while the Congress had scheduled 'Samvidhan Bachao' rallies in Pratapgarh and Banswara.

Communal strife: K'taka govt inaugurates Special Action Force unit in Mangaluru
Mangaluru (Karnataka): The Karnataka government has officially inaugurated a Special Action Force (SAF) unit, the Communal Violence Control Force, in Mangaluru, aimed at preventing communal strife and serial revenge killings in coastal Karnataka and Malnad (hilly) regions of the state, thereby ensuring law and order. State Home Minister G. Parameshwara inaugurated the unit on Friday at the District Police Parade Ground in Mangaluru. Several dignitaries and police officers attended the event. The Congress-led government created this special force following incidents of revenge killings, mob lynching, and a series of stabbing incidents in the Mangaluru region. These crimes threatened the law and order system in the communally sensitive Mangaluru district. The entire coastal region had become tense, and these incidents threatened to disrupt peace in the state. Speaking after inaugurating the Special Action Force, HM Parameshwara stated that the SAF is necessary in Mangaluru, Udupi, and Shivamogga districts. HM Parameshwara acknowledged that many might criticise this task force but emphasised that peace in Mangaluru district would translate into peace across the entire state. He urged the people of the district to cooperate with the work of this task force and also mentioned that, if necessary, this task force would be established across the entire state. This unit has been formed with the objective of conducting rapid operations in communally sensitive areas. A total of 248 police personnel have been deployed in this unit, and the team will be divided into three companies. Speaker U.T. The government has also announced that the personnel serving in the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) will be reassigned to the Communal Violence Control Force. The government order released on May 29 in this regard states, among the total available total 648 posts in the ANF, 248 officers and staff are shortlisted to establish the SAF. The order states: "The new SAF will have three companies and they will be established in Udupi, Shivamogga and Mangaluru districts. The functions and responsibilities of this force include establishing an Intelligence unit with a technical cell to monitor and collect information from the media, social media, and Intelligence sources regarding hate speech, provocative incidents, and communal-related activities. 'To create an alert system for potential communal violence through surveillance and human Intelligence; to undertake confidence-building measures through effective outreach and influence; to implement measures to identify and monitor radicalisation." The IGP of the zone will take the necessary steps to deploy Special Task Force officers/personnel during instances of communal riots, it says.

NEW DELHI: An Air India flight from London to New Delhi had just entered Iranian airspace when Israel launched a wave of missile strikes on Iran's military and nuclear sites. The flight was rerouted over Iraq before arriving in India one hour late, according to an AFP report. In a statement, Air India said: 'Due to the emerging situation in Iran, the subsequent closure of its airspace and in view of the safety of our passengers, the following Air India flights are either being diverted or returning to their origin. Global airlines suspended flights to Tel Aviv and Tehran as air traffic over the region thinned out overnight. Israel said the strikes were a direct response to the growing threat from Iran's missile and nuclear capabilities. Iran retaliated by launching a wave of drones toward Israeli territory.
