Lottery player wins big on $1 second chance ticket in Maryland. ‘Wait a minute'
Whenever a Maryland man buys a Powerball ticket, he always spends $1 more buying a second chance ticket.
'If you are going to play, you should give yourself a second chance to win,' the Baltimore man told Maryland Lottery officials in a May 23 news release.
Double Play is a second drawing that follows each Powerball drawing that gives 'players a chance to win up to $10 million with the same ticket numbers,' lottery officials said in an April 1 news release.
Using numbers 'based on family birth dates and times,' the medical worker bought his Powerball and Double Play ticket at Horseshoe Casino for the May 21 drawing, lottery officials said.
The man visited the lottery website to check the winning Powerball numbers but only matched one number and the Powerball, lottery officials said.
He sat tight for 30 more minutes, waiting for the Double Play results to roll in, lottery officials said.
'I looked at the numbers and then said 'wait a minute' I think I have a match,' he said in the release.
While the player didn't have a match for the game's top prize, he 'had four out of five numbers and the Powerball for a third-tier prize of $50,000,' lottery officials said.
The winner told lottery officials he plans to spend his prize paying off some bills.

Powerball jackpots to insane amount
A staggering $100m jackpot will be up for grabs next week after no claims were made for the Powerball division one prize in Thursday night's draw. This is the first time the top prize has reached this amount since November 2024, and the 12th time Powerball has offered a $100m jackpot in the game's 29-year history. This year alone, eight Powerball division one winners have taken home more than $210.8m – three in Queensland, two each in NSW and Victoria, and one in Western Australia. Last year, a man from South Australia claimed a whopping $150m, the game's biggest individual lottery win in Australia. While there were no division one winners on Thursday night, six lucky Aussies took home $127,979 each in the division two prize pool. The winning numbers were 1, 30, 12, 34, 24, 9, 6 and the Powerball 10. Tickets for the upcoming Powerball are available for purchase until 6pm next Thursday in-store, online or via the Lotto mobile app.

Lottery player wins big — and plans to hit the mall. ‘I'm refreshing my wardrobe'
A lucky lottery player already has plans for some of the $50,000 he won playing Bonus Match 5 in Maryland. The Baltimore man, who works as a program counselor, has a shopping spree in his future, according to a June 4 news release from the Maryland Lottery. He told lottery officials that, 'I like clothes and I'm refreshing my wardrobe.' The man bought the Bonus Match 5 tickets at a food mart in Baltimore, lottery officials said. He scanned his tickets at a gas station later on, 'and the one said to 'Take to the Lottery,'' the man said, per lottery officials. He looked for guidance from the cashier, who 'told him he won big,' lottery officials said. The man, 'in disbelief,' kept running errands, but he did make one immediate purchase: getting his car detailed. 'I just wanted my car right and I got the works,' he told lottery officials. 'I didn't care how much it cost.' Along with the mall trip, the man may buy his wife a new car with the windfall, and he plans to save, lottery officials said.
