"Other players are going to want to do the things Yao Ming is doing" - When MJ predicted a surge of Asian talent in the NBA originally appeared on Basketball Network.
Michael Jordan acknowledged the remarkable evolution occurring within the NBA during his final return in 2001. One of the most striking observations MJ made was the emerging potential of Asian talent entering the league.

Jordan's keen insight led him to believe that the ascent of Yao Ming, who was rapidly gaining prominence as a star player, could represent the beginning of a significant breakthrough for Asian athletes in basketball. He recognized that this development not only had the potential to elevate the profile of Asian players but also posed substantial benefits for the NBA as an organization. By embracing this influx of talent, the league could diversify its appeal and strengthen its global reach, fostering a richer, more inclusive basketball environment.
"I think Asia, it will continue to grow with the talent that's in the league now, and the other players are going to want to do the things Yao Ming is doing,'' Jordan told reporters in Hong Kong back in 2004. "I think it's going to be very positive.''
"Those guys have started to show that the game has started to expand toward Asia,'' the former Chicago Bulls superstar added. "It helps the game of basketball to be able to globally be connected to so many different countries.''
Kobe saw the same thing
Before Yao, it was his compatriot Wang Zhi-Zhi who generated buzz in the NBA. Wang was the first Chinese player to compete in the NBA, and his arrival was perceived as groundbreaking progress for both the league and the Chinese basketball community.

Very much like Jordan, then-Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant also recognized the same thing about more Asian players coming into the NBA. The Black Mamba also credited the media for playing a key role in reaching audiences from different parts of the globe.
"I don't see why not," Bryant told CNN when asked if he thinks players from other countries could possibly play in the NBA. "I mean, it's just a game. No matter where you're from, it doesn't matter. If you pick up a basketball, and go on your driveway or go to the playground, and play basketball. The more you play, the better you get."
"If you look at the NBA now, you have a Chinese player [Wang Zhi-Zhi] playing for the Dallas Mavericks," he pointed out. "What happens is through communication through Satellite TV, people can now see the how the NBA is played, and they get a chance to learn from these players. As a result, you'll see a lot more of foreign players coming into the NBA now."

Who's gonna be the next great Asian NBA player?
A number of Asian players have made it to the NBA in the past 25 years. However, nobody has achieved what Yao has accomplished in his tenure in the league.
So far, the last Asian NBA player to make great strides in the league was Taiwanese-American former point guard Jeremy Lin. Through the Linsanity phenomenon, Lin managed to put Asian talent back on the map. However, it only lasted for a short period of time.

In the current NBA, Japan's Rui Hachimura has been displaying a promising career ahead of him. However, it is yet to be known if the NBA will ever see another Yao or Lin type player.

"Someone Investigate How Boston Keeps Getting Away With This Sh**": NBA Fans React To Celtics Trading Jrue Holiday

"Someone Investigate How Boston Keeps Getting Away With This Sh**": NBA Fans React To Celtics Trading Jrue Holiday originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Celtics have begun their offseason moves by trading the two-time NBA champion, Jrue Holiday, to the Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks. This comes after the Celtics are reportedly looking to blow it all up and even listen to offers for their star players, Jaylen Brown and Derrick White. Advertisement NBA fans could not believe that the Celtics managed to convert a veteran player into a promising young star and also get two second-round picks in the process. They took to social media and expressed their opinions about the Celtics' trade with the Blazers. "BROOOO WHY DO BOSTON ALWAYS GET THESE GOOD TRADES" "Someone investigate how Boston keeps getting away with this sh**" "WHY WOULD THE BLAZERS DO THIS?" "The Celtics get a young potential star for an aging vet, are you kidding me?" "THEY CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS" However, not all fans felt that the Celtics got the better end of the deal. Some even believed that the Blazers managed to get a veteran defender in return for a player with shooting struggles. Advertisement "Celtics' downfall has begun." "Gave up your elite defender for a point guard who can barely shoot." "Blazers fleecing the Celtics lmaoooo what" "FLEECED BY THE BLAZERS!!!!" In my opinion, the Celtics got the better end of this deal. They got rid of Jrue Holiday's massive contract, where they could have been forced to pay him over $100 million over the next three seasons. Instead, they got a young star on an expiring contract who is owed only $27 million next season. The Celtics could tailor an extension with Simons that could be more financially feasible for them. Moreover, Jrue Holiday is 35 years old, and his contributions to the team are limited to the defensive end of the floor. He averaged only 11.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists on the Celtics this season. The Trail Blazers had seven players who averaged scoring in double digits this season, but Simons was the closest to an All-Star leap as he led all scorers for them, averaging 19.7 points per game. Advertisement With Tatum expected to be sidelined all of next season, Simons could finally take that leap with the Celtics this season. While it is more of a win-now move for the Blazers as they look to provide some veteran experience to their young roster, the Celtics have a higher ceiling on what they could get out of Simons in the future. This is not the first time Jrue Holiday has been traded to the Blazers. When Damian Lillard was traded to the Bucks, Jrue Holiday was sent in return to the Blazers. However, they re-routed him to the Celtics four days later as a part of a trade that brought Malcolm Brogdon, Robert Williams, and two future first-round picks to the Blazers. It seems like the Blazers are following the blueprint that the Rockets used with Fred VanVleet. Blazers might just benefit a lot from this trade as well. It will be interesting to see how this trade turns out for both teams. Mark Williams trade report: Hornets send center to Suns months after canceled Lakers deal

Charlotte Hornets starting center Mark Williams is on the move, seemingly for real this time. The Hornets are trading Williams to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for the No. 29 pick of the 2025 NBA Draft and a first-round pick in the 2029 NBA Draft, ESPN reported on Wednesday. The Suns (on behalf of the Hornets) went on to select Liam McNeeley out of UConn with the No. 29 pick. Advertisement Williams was dealt to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Dalton Knecht and Cam Reddish ahead of the trade deadline in February, but the Lakers announced two days later that the trade had been "rescinded due to failure to satisfy a condition of the trade." A person with knowledge of the decision told USA TODAY Sports that the trade fell through because Williams failed a physical. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information. 2025 NBA DRAFT LIVE UPDATES: Full list of NBA draft picks, analysis of first round That meant Williams returned to Charlotte, but not for long. He's now being sent to the Suns to help address the team's need for a big. The Suns, who acquired the No. 10 pick of the 2025 NBA Draft after trading Kevin Durant to the Rockets, drafted Duke center Khaman Maluach 10th overall Wednesday. Williams was drafted out of Duke with the 15th overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft by Charlotte, where he's spent the first three years of his career. He averaged career-highs in points (15.3), rebounds (10.2) and assists (2.5) in 44 games (41 starts) last season, but a number of injuries have sidelined Williams for significant time to start his career. Advertisement He played in 43 games (17 starts) his rookie season and was limited to 19 games (all starts) his sophomore season with the Hornets after suffering a back injury. Through three seasons, he's played a total of 106 out of 246 total games. The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast.
