Fawad on Bollywood co-stars

Express Tribune24-04-2025

Cross-border film star Fawad Khan, who has worked on a number of Bollywood films, told Nukta Dubai what he admires about the Indian heroines he has starred with.
Beginning with Sonam Kapoor, who was his co-star in his Bollywood debut Khoobsurat, Fawad said, "I think she's unfiltered, which is absolutely amazing. She says what's on her mind, and she's a very good person at heart."
Next up was Alia Bhatt, who starred opposite him and Siddharth Malhotra in Kapoor & Sons, which chronicles the tale of a dysfunctional family. "Alia has got a lot of energy. I think she's also an amazing person to work with. All of them are talented of course, but with Alia, it's the energy [that shines]. You have to be on your toes," Fawad said.
The Humsafar actor had similar praises for Anushka Sharma, who briefly paired up with him in romance film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. "Again, energy. Yeah, lots of energy," Fawad stressed. "In all these people, there is one thing that's common, and I feel that it's one common compliment."
Adding in praise for his latest Indian co-star Vaani Kapoor, who he will be seen with in Abir Gulaal next month, Fawad said, "Vaani is a very gifted performer."
The Zindagi Gulzar Hai actor summed up his observations with gratitude towards all his peers. "My main compliment to all these people is that they are good at heart," he said. "They're good people. And when people are sincerely virtuous then it is fun to work with them, which is even true for the ones I've worked with in Pakistan. As long as you're not having a bad day, you'll find that most people are good at heart, which is something that I'm thankful for."
Selectively camera-shy
The praises come days after Fawad bumped into Atif Aslam, who roped the actor into his newfound reel-making hobby on Instagram. The singer also included The Legend of Maula Jatt director Bilal Lashari and the film's other star Faris Shafi into his shenanigans.
"How it feels when the OG friend group finally gets back together," read the text on the reel, as all involved celebrities strutted in the camera's direction. "Avengers assemble," Atif added in the caption.
Naturally, the casual collaboration stirred up rumours about something bigger in store. Addressing the speculation during the interview, Fawad said, "Atif is Atif. He's like the pride of Pakistan, so it would be an honour to work with him on something. And I've heard people are really into making reels these days."
Like Atif who was with Jal before becoming a solo act, Fawad too was formerly part of Entity Paradigm (EP) prior to the music group's disbanding. Though when it comes to making reels like Atif, Fawad can't relate. "I'm not that talented," he swiftly admitted. "I'm not that gifted. I can't do it. I'm not good at it."
Despite his selective camera-shyness, Fawad is adored internationally for his onscreen presence. From playing suave heartthrobs to portraying action heroes, he has dabbled in a variety of roles that keep his fans anticipating what's next.
On why he chose Abir Gulaal as his next venture, Fawad said, "In recent times, whatever work I've done has been of a serious nature - very dramatic, and perhaps even traumatising. Like Maula Jatt, which had a lot of bloodshed but was a different project for me too."
Fawad feels that it's easy to fall into a cycle while pursuing something new, so he decided to reassess and swing back to his roots. "I think it was time for something very sweet and simple that would bring me back to the basics, and that was Abir Gulaal."

Voices from the Roof of the World

An internationally acclaimed documentary series titled Voices from the Roof of the World, which highlights the human side of the climate crisis and presents it as a source of catastrophic suffering, is being brought to television screens. The production has been sponsored by the Aga Khan University, Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, Aga Khan Foundation, and the University of Central Asia and will be telecast by the Express Media Group. The documentary has been honoured with many international awards, including at the International Nature and Environmental Protection Film Festival held in Hungary, in 2023. The project seeks to highlight the human side of the climate-crisis, presenting it as a source of catastrophic suffering instead of what it has long been misunderstood and presented as an "issue" to be addressed down the road. This series breaks with the conventional depiction of climate change by focusing on its day-to-day reality for ordinary people. The roof for much of the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia are the mountain ranges of the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush. The central message of the documentary series states that roofs provide people with shelter and protect them from harm, adding that in the comfort of their homes they shelter individuals from the wrath of nature — rainfall, extreme heat and extreme cold. It further notes that roofs rely on pillars of support to hold them up, and if the burden on them increases beyond capacity and the pillars are damaged and weakened, the same roof would collapse and kill people. It's a production by an Emmy award winning producer Andrew Tkach.

Internet reacts as Bilawal calls Modi ‘Temu version' of Netanyahu

Pakistan People's Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari called Indian Prime Minister the 'Temu version' of his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu, and the internet is flooded with memes, praising Bilawal's wit and his ability to represent Pakistan at the biggest of forums. Speaking at a press conference at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, Bilawal said, 'Mr Modi is sort of the Temu version of Netanyahu, so it's a poor copy, and we call the Indian government to not be inspired by the worst example possible.' During a press conference at the United Nations headquarters on June 3, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari criticised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a "Temu version of Netanyahu" and a "poor copy" of the Israeli leader. Absolute cheap stuff. — Sarmad Masud (@SarmadDr) June 4, 2025 Many social media users in Pakistan hailed Bilawal's remarks as sharp and effective, viewing them as a reflection of his ability to represent Pakistan at high-level international forums. Another user called the comparison 'an appropriate description' of Modi and his supporters, accusing them of 'Bollywood-style delusional thinking.' Justice before nationalism. Always. — Aijaz Narejo (@AyjazNarej49243) June 4, 2025 The viral moment also spurred jokes aimed at Temu itself. One user commented, 'Temu is going to shut down all its business after being compared with Modi and Netanyahu,' while another quipped, 'Meanwhile, Temu: crying in the corner.' Is this the way to address the PM? and they expect us for dialogue — Srinivas (@sreenislg) June 4, 2025 A few, however, also criticised the comparison. An Indian user, Srinivasan, remarked, 'Is this the way to address the PM? And they expect us to come for dialogue.' While the remarks stirred humour and debate online, they also highlighted the continuing tensions in regional rhetoric between Pakistan and India, as well as the role social media plays in amplifying diplomatic discourse.

MrBeast hits 400 million subscribers on YouTube

MrBeast has reached a new milestone on YouTube by surpassing 400 million subscribers. Celebrating the feat on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, "400,000,000 subscribers! A decade ago, before I blew up, everyone in my life told me I was too obsessed and constantly told me that I'd never make it." The YouTuber added that his passion led him against the criticism. "Despite that, I was in love with making content and grinded every moment my eyes were open for seven years before anyone started watching. I literally told my mom I'd rather be homeless than do anything else." Grateful to the platform and his subscribers, he said, "The greatest gift in life is being able to wake up everyday with a purpose and thanks to YouTube and you guys, I have that. Thanks for 400M." No other channels on the platform are even close to the number. To put into perspective, Pewdiepie and T-Series – who had the popular online race to 100 million subscribers back in 2019, which the Indian music company won – are at 110 million and 295 million subscribers respectively. In 2023, MrBeast expressed his desire to break T-Series' record of subscribers – with MrBeast at 125 million subscribers and T-Series at 230 million then. He broke the record in 2024, becoming the most subscribed YouTuber on the platform. MrBeast, born James Stephen "Jimmy" Donaldson, joined YouTube in 2012 by posting gaming content and trying other formats. Flashforward to a 2017 video, he counted down to 100,000, which became his gateway to fame. The video currently has almost 32 million views. Since then, the YouTuber became known for his extravagant challenges and large-scale giveaways. In 2024, he premiered his own version of Netflix's Squid Game, called Beast Games on Amazon's Prime Video. The 10-episode competition series featured 1,000 players and set a grand prize of $5,000,000. Later, a lawsuit was filed against the content creator and his production company on behalf of five unnamed contestants, as per Variety. The lawsuit alleged that the show failed to provide basic necessities such as medical care, food, and sleep to the participants, adding that they were not paid minimum wage for their overtime involvement and were subjected to "dangerous circumstances and conditions." In response, MrBeast wrote on X, "We have tons of behind-the-scenes footage dropping when the series does to show how these claims were blown out of proportion. Just can't release it now because it would spoil the games." The show scored a 5.7 rating on IMDb and a 20 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers remarking that it exploited underprivileged participants for entertainment and missed the point of Squid Game.
