Barca's Pre-Season Exhibition Against Vissel Kobe Cancelled Over Contractual Breaches
Spanish champions Barcelona cancelled their pre-season friendly against Japanese side Vissel Kobe due to serious cases of contractual breaches from the promoter.
La Liga champions Barcelona have cancelled their pre-season friendly against Japanese side Vissel Kobe due to serious cases of contractual breaches from the promoter's end.
The incident also throws the Blaugrana's trip to South Korea, as part of their Asian pre-season tour, into question. But, the Seoul-based promoter, D-Drive, asserted that the issue stemmed from the organisers in Japan.
'Barcelona announces that it has been obliged to suspend its participation in the game scheduled for next Sunday in Japan due to serious contractual breaches on behalf of the promoter," the Catalan club said in a statement.
'Barcelona regrets this incident and the impact it will have on the many, many Barca fans in Japan," the Spanish giants added.
Kobe, who had the privilege of serving as the home of Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta during his twilight years, apologised to all stakeholders and fans who eagerly awaited the exhibition game.
'We sincerely apologise for any concern this may cause to the many fans and stakeholders who were looking forward to this match," the Japanese side said.
However, tour promoters, D-Drive, a South Korean-based firm, blamed the organisers in Japan and asserted that the Culers' trip to Seoul will go ahead as planned.
'All scheduled activities in South Korea will take place as planned, without any disruptions," the promoter said.
'This is an issue that stems solely from the Japanese side and has no connection whatsoever with the Korea tour," D-Drive reiterated.
'To all media outlets around the world: My name is and Official Promoter of the FC Barcelona 2025 Asian Tour, representing D-DRIVE.
'The match between Vissel Kobe and FC Barcelona, which has just been cancelled, was originally proposed by the Yasuda Group, the main sponsor of Real Sociedad, and was to be co-hosted locally in Japan. D-DRIVE was scheduled to receive full payment for the match today; however, the funds ultimately failed to arrive," Seul Ham, the General Manager of D-Drive revealed.
'Instead, the Yasuda Grouphas repeatedly provided invalid and falsified documents, deceiving us by falsely claiming that the payment had already been transferred to Korea. We have obtained an audio recording from a Yasuda Group employee stating that their CEO ultimately did not send the money, clearly confirming intentional fraud," Ham continued.
'As a result of this fraudulent conduct, Rakuten's public image has suffered significant damage. In light of these events, FC Barcelona has made the correct and responsible decision to cancel the match in Japan."
'We will take legal action against the responsible Japanese entities to recover damages. Unlike in Japan, in Korea, the promoter has fully prepared the matches and covered all related costs. As of today, only flight expenses remain outstanding," Ham added.
'To our fans in Korea: please rest assured. D-DRIVE remains fully committed to making the remainder of the tour a success. We will do everything possible to deliver unforgettable matches," Ham promised.

India all set for a strong show at Asian Surfing C'ships
CHENNAI: The waves off the coast in Mahabalipuram are set to grace the wave-blades of top surfers as the week-long Asian Surfing Championships is set to kick-off on Sunday. The event is crucial as it serves as a qualifier to next year's Asian Games at Aichi Nagoya, Japan. Over 150 athletes from 20 Asian countries have landed here to prove their mettle as well as grab quotas for the Asian Games. India have already been secured two quotas last year and this event will give them an opportunity to grab some more. For Surfing Federation of India's (SFI) president Arun Vasu, this Asian meet is of a huge significance. Apart from overlooking the sport since 2012 (when the organisation was not even recognised by the sports ministry), organising this tournament, he reckons, is a big step towards matching the world standards, something he saw in the 2023 and 2024 Asian meets in Maldives. "When we travelled there, we saw how they maintained their standards in organising tournaments. It's an amazing opportunity for our Indian team because one, of course, to compete at such a (high) level and secondly, it's their home break," he added. Eight of the 12 Indian team athletes are from Tamil Nadu and have trained in the same waters that they are set to compete in. Senior national champions like Kishore Kumar and Kamali P are expected to put on a strong show.

The Indian men's and women's table tennis teams have booked their places for the prestigious World Table Tennis Championships (WTTC) in London after a stellar show at the 2025 South Asia Regional Championships held in Kathmandu. Only 16 coveted Asian quota spots were available per gender. Four regional champions from Central Asia, South Asia, South-East Asia, and West Asia secured direct qualification for the WTTC -- one of the most prestigious events in the international calendar. Both the Indian teams emerged undefeated in the five-nation round-robin format, reaffirming their supremacy in the South Asian region. The men's team comprising Akash Pal, Ronit Bhanja, Anirban Ghosh, P B Abhinand and Divyansh Srivastava defeated Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Maldives with identical 3-0 wins. The women's team, led by Krittwika Sinha, Selenadeepthi Selvakumar, Taneesha Kotecha, Sayali Wani, and Syndrela Das produced an equally commanding show to register comprehensive 3-0 victories over the same four opponents.

Japan's Yamashita leads Women's British Open after superb 65
Japan's Miyu Yamashita shot a bogey-free second round of 65 to lead the Women's British Open by three shots at Royal Porthcawl on Friday. HT Image Yamashita, who celebrates her 24th birthday on Saturday, was one of several players to take advantage of calmer conditions in the morning in south Wales following her first round of 68. She set the clubhouse target at 11 under par, while playing partner Rio Takeda followed Thursday's round of 67 with a three-under 69 to lie second. The Japanese duo will play together again in Saturday's final group, with a four-shot gap between Takeda and a trio of players at four under. "My pairing with Takeda allowed us to play in (a) good rhythm," said Yamashita. "It's rare for two Japanese players to play together in a major, so it was great." Yamashita, whose best performance in a major tournament was a tie for second place at last year's Women's PGA Championship, said her rhythm was behind Friday's latest fine round. "My tee shots were very consistent, so I was able to hit from the fairway," she said. "I played really consistent golf today. "I haven't particularly worried about expected scores until now. I'm always thinking about competing for a high position in each tournament, and I just played with my day in mind, so I'm glad that my score worked out". England's Lottie Woad looked on course to post a similar score to Yamashita in her second round before a triple-bogey seven on the par-four 16th. Woad is on two under par, alongside American world number one Nelly Korda, who shot a level-par 72 in the second round. Blustery conditions in the afternoon saw the cut mark slip back to two over par, allowing defending champion Lydia Ko of New Zealand to make it through to the weekend. Meanwhile, Australia's Steph Kyriacou hit the first hole-in-one of this year's tournament at the par-three eighth hole. jdg/nr
