Son of ‘El Chapo' Guzman pleads guilty to narcotics trafficking charges in Chicago federal court
By pleading guilty, however, Ovidio Guzman Lopez, 35, has agreed to cooperate with U.S. authorities in any ongoing investigations and testify against his associates in the hopes that prosecutors will recommend a sentence of less than life in prison.
Those details were revealed in a dramatic, 90-minute hearing under tight security at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse, where Guzman Lopez pleaded guilty to two counts each of supervising an ongoing criminal enterprise and drug trafficking conspiracy.
In his plea agreement with prosecutors, Guzman Lopez admitted to three specific murders that took place in Mexico and Arizona, as well as his involvement in the January 2023 shootout with Mexican law enforcement as they tried to arrest him in the Mexican city of Culican, which led to the deaths of dozens of individuals.
He also admitted to overseeing the shipment of thousands of kilograms of the powerful synthetic narcotic fentanyl into the U.S., an operation that authorities have blamed for countless overdose deaths over the past decade.
Dressed in an orange jail jumpsuit and shackled at the ankles, Guzman Lopez stood at the lectern with his hands folded in front of him for the proceedings on Friday, listening through a Spanish interpreter.
Each time prosecutors recited specific allegations in the plea agreement, U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman asked him if he understood and agreed that he was responsible.
'Sí,' Guzman Lopez answered each time.

Spain replaces women's team coach Montse Tomé with Sonia Bermúdez
MADRID (AP) — Spain's women's national team is making a coaching change two weeks after reaching the final of the European Championship. Montse Tomé will not have her contract renewed and will be replaced by former player Sonia Bermúdez, the Spanish soccer federation said Monday. Another former Spain player, Iraia Iturregi, was named the team's second coach. The decision was made by the federation's board members after Tomé led Spain to the Euro 2025 final, which it lost to England in a penalty shootout on July 27. Tomé replaced former coach Jorge Vilda following the team's World Cup title in 2023. She led Spain to the title of the inaugural Women's Nations League in 2024. Her current contract with the national team was valid until the end of the month. Tomé was the first woman to coach the senior women's team in Spain. She had been an assistant to Vilda during the World Cup and was promoted in the fallout of former federation president Luis Rubiales' nonconsensual kiss of player Jenni Hermoso during the World Cup's awards ceremony in Australia. Spain has enjoyed some peace and stability since Rubiales was convicted of sexual assault for the kiss that ignited one of the worst crises in Spanish soccer. The outrage surrounding the scandal led to widespread changes and improved conditions for the women's national team. Spanish society called for more support for women, and sports officials ultimately were forced to review outdated protocols related to the women's squad. Bermúdez was a Spain international and also played for Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, among other clubs. She retired as a player in 2020. Bermúdez had been coaching the youth squads of Spain's national team. She was currently with the under-23 squad. The board that made the decision was composed of 30 members, half of them women.

Rubio condemns ‘tragic' death of assassinated Colombian presidential candidate
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has condemned the assassination of Colombian senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay, who died Monday after being shot during a June campaign rally. Uribe was 39. 'Deeply saddened to learn of Colombian Senator @MiguelUribeT's tragic death,' Rubio wrote on social media. 'The United States stands in solidarity with his family, the Colombian people, both in mourning and demanding justice for those responsible.' Uribe was hospitalized in critical condition immediately after the shooting, which took place at a campaign rally in his country's capital of Bogota. He had been a prominent opposition voice against the left-wing government of President Gustavo Petro. Uribe came from a prominent political family that had been previously impacted by political violence. His grandfather, Julio César Turbay Ayala, served as president for four years starting in 1972. His mother, Diana Turbay, was kidnapped and killed by the Medellín Cartel in 1991. It's not clear who ordered the assassination or why. Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), who was born in Colombia, condemned Uribe's killing. 'Miguel Uribe represented the best of Colombia. May he rest in peace, may his spirit guide Colombia into the future, and may this horrible situation wake up a sentiment of reconciliation and direction for Colombians,' he wrote on X. Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.) also expressed his condolences to Uribe's family, calling the politician 'brilliant, tireless, brave' in a Spanish-language post on social media.
