I'm not afraid of being boxed in: Srinath Maganti

Time of India01-07-2025
From watching film shoots unfold in Ameerpet as a wide-eyed schoolboy to sharing screen space with
, Srinath Maganti has been anything but conventional. A proud Hyderabadi, the actor has gradually made his mark in Telugu cinema, from his breakout in Bilalpur Police Station to the acclaimed Lucky Bhaskar and the high-profile Animal.

In a candid chat with Hyderabad Times, Srinath opens up about his acting roots, confronting bias in the industry, and why he's not afraid to be boxed into a type.
'I told my dad I wanted to act; his silence lasted for days'
Born and raised in Hyderabad, Srinath's love for cinema began long before he ever stepped onto a film set. 'I've spent most of my life in Ameerpet. This city isn't just where I live, it's home. I still remember watching the rains from the Ameerpet Observatory.
It was there that I saw my first film shoot where Srihari sir was on set. The second time, it was Nagarjuna sir during Azad. That's when something clicked.'
Though he pursued engineering and went on to start his own manufacturing business, the desire to act never faded. 'Once the business was stable, I told my dad I wanted to act. He just asked, 'YouTube, serials, or cinema?' I said, 'Cinema or nothing.' What followed was three days of silence at home.
Eventually, he introduced me to acting coach Satyanand, the same teacher who trained Mahesh Babu, Prabhas, and Ravi Teja, which marked the formal beginning of my journey into cinema,' he recalls.

'A 9000-km train journey led me to HIT'
Before he entered the HIT universe, Srinath teamed up with director
for a short film titled Uniki: a bold, experimental project shot entirely on trains across India. 'We covered 9,000 kilometers in 18 days, from Kanyakumari to Dharamshala.

We slept on platforms, showered in train bathrooms, and kept moving. I even had a fall in Varanasi and got eight stitches. But it was raw, real, and unforgettable.'
That project deepened his creative bond with Sailesh, eventually leading to roles in HIT 1 and HIT 2. 'Back then, it wasn't about money or scale. We just wanted to make something honest. And that journey taught me what it means to truly commit to a role,' he says.

'Not every challenge on set is creative'
Srinath's entry into
's Animal, where he played the role of
's brother, came as a surprise, even to him. But while the film gave him the opportunity to be part of a pan-India project, his time on set also brought an unexpected moment of tension. 'One of the actors, who played a friend of
in the film, seemed to take issue with the prominence of my role. We had just landed in Mumbai, and I'd seen his hoardings all across the city.
Maybe that played into it. Out of nowhere, he came up to me and said, 'Tu kaun hai? Same caste as Vanga? Who's your manager?' I didn't realise Sandeep sir was standing behind us. I simply replied, 'Let me do my job,' and walked away. Sandeep sir looked at me and said, 'Good answer.''

Srinath Maganti:
'DQ sir's dedication during Lucky Bhaskar taught me so much. He'd change outfits four or five times on set without ever stepping into the vanity, no fuss, just focus. That level of professionalism really inspired me'
'Typecasting doesn't scare me. Our industry is shifting. People are getting chances to break out of the boxes. Look at
. He began as a background artiste. Or Priyadarshi, who started with comic roles and now headlines films. Anything is possible, and I leave it to the uncertainty'

Mukesh Khanna opens up on Ranbir Kapoor playing Ram in Ramayana, saying, 'Portraying Ram won't...'

Mukesh Khanna, famous for his iconic role as Bhishma Pitamah in the TV epic Mahabharat, is known for speaking his mind. Recently, he shared his thoughts on the upcoming film Ramayan, starring Ranbir Kapoor and directed by Nitesh Tiwari. What does Mukesh Khanna say about Ranbir Kapoor playing Ram? In an interview with Galatta India, Khanna expressed doubts if Ranbir Kapoor can truly embody the 'Maryada Purushottam'—the epitome of virtue and restraint that Ram is. He said, 'You are showing Ram climbing trees and shooting arrows. Krishna or Arjun can do that, but Ram would not. If Ram called himself a warrior, he would never ask for help from monkeys. He alone was enough to fight Ravan.' Khanna also mentioned the challenge Ranbir faces because of his recent controversial film Animal, stating, 'He is a good actor, but he has an image from Animal. If you portray Ram as a fighter, people won't accept it. Ram accepted 14 years of exile with folded hands, endured Shabari's false hatred; he never used bows and arrows for show.' Did Mukesh Khanna try to speak up before? Khanna revealed he had made a short video expressing his concerns about the portrayal of Ram in the Ramayan: The Introduction teaser. However, his team informed him the clips he saw were AI-generated fake videos by YouTubers, so he decided not to upload it on social media. What was Khanna's reaction to Ranbir's personal choices? When a publication asked about Ranbir's casting given that he admitted to eating beef, Khanna replied, 'I said I won't comment. Maybe he ate it, maybe he stopped. Let it be.' How does Khanna view the scale and content of Ramayan? 'Ramayan is the greatest story ever,' Khanna said. But he warned that making it with a 1000-crore budget won't guarantee success. 'Ramayan doesn't succeed because of money; it's content that matters. Just like Shaktimaan didn't become popular because of stars but because of its story.' Is star power necessary for Ramayan? Khanna was clear: 'If you put a star in Shaktimaan hoping the film will work, that means you don't trust the story itself. So why do you need big stars in Ramayan?' He pointed out that the movie already includes strong actors like Sunny Deol, Sai Pallavi, and Yash.

Ranbir Kapoor's Animal co-star confesses he ‘didn't understand' the film until the end; said he rejected it after first meeting with Sandeep Reddy Vanga

Ranbir Kapoor is regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation, and with his last release, Animal, he delivered both the biggest hit and the most polarising film of his career. His co-star Saurabh Sachdeva, last seen in Dhadak 2, recently spoke about Ranbir's attitude on set. When asked if the star ever threw 'tantrums,' Saurabh said that if Ranbir had been throwing tantrums, he wouldn't have been able to deliver his craft on screen. For Saurabh, Animal was also a massive project, but he candidly admitted that he didn't fully understand what director Sandeep Reddy Vanga was trying to achieve, or the world he was trying to create, until the very end. In a chat with the YouTube channel Filmygyan, Saurabh was asked if star kid Ranbir 'threw any tantrums' on set and the actor was quick to answer that no one actually does that. 'Nobody does that. This is all nonsense. Everyone is human and if they are a good actor, professional, and know how to connect with a co-actor… they know that is how a scene comes alive. If they start throwing tantrums, then how will the scene come to life? How can he be such a beautiful, powerful, versatile actor, if he does not connect with me or with any other co-actor? It's not possible,' he shared. Talking more about Ranbir, Saurabh shared that he was 'always connected, very humble and respectful with his co-actors.' Saurabh Sachdeva had a brief but impactful appearance in Animal and he said that when he was first offered the part, he was very skeptical about taking it up. 'I was initially very skeptical about doing the film. When I met Sandeep for the first time, I didn't understand what was happening in the film and I was wondering that since it's such a huge cast, I might get lost in it,' he said. 'But I was thinking that I still don't understand the story of the film,' he shared. He met Sandeep thrice and still didn't have a clue about the world that the director was trying to create here. 'I told him that I do not understand the world of this film. He then showed me the scene of the masked men and I got even more confused. Then he showed me that scene between Triptii Dimri and Ranbir in the lawn. Then the writer of the film, he started narrating a few more scenes and I said, 'Okay, I will do it',' he said. But, for all of his shooting schedule, Saurabh felt 'confused.' 'Honestly, throughout the film, I was really confused, till the end. And I wasn't sure if what I was doing was right or not,' he said. Saurabh Sachdeva was also asked about an update on Animal Park and he said, 'I have no clue. I also want to know when it's coming out. The shoot hasn't even started. Sandeep is making Spirit, and then he will start this.' He added, 'They are still writing the story. It's a work in progress.'
