New Straits Times13 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia have withdrawn from the World Junior Squash Championships in Cairo, Egypt from July 21-Aug 1 due to the Middle East crisis (conflict between Israel and Iran).
Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia president Gerard Monteiro said the authorities have advised them not to go to the tournament.
"We have informed the World Squash Federation of our withdrawal from the championships yesterday due to uncertainty of the situation in the Middle East," said Gerard today.
Six Malaysian boys and six girls were supposed to take part in the Under-19 championships in Cairo.
Low Wa Sern, who won the boys' Under-19 title in the Asian Junior Championships in Gimcheon, South Korea recently, was seeded joint fifth for the world meet. The Perakian was to play his fourth and last World Junior Championships.
"Unfortunately, it's not going to happen. I am disappointed," said Wa Sern who finished fifth in the World Junior Championships in Houston, the United States last year.
Another national junior player, M. Nickhileswar, was also disappointed at not being able to participate in Cairo.
"The players were informed by SRAM on Saturday (July 12) that they would not be going to Cairo because of the crisis in the Middle East.
"It is disappointing because all my hard work in training has gone to waste. However, I can still compete in the next two World Junior Championships as I am 16."

AFF U-23: Early Nerves Cost Malaysia Against Philippines

By Mohd Iswandi Kasan Anuar JAKARTA, July 15 (Bernama) -- National U-23 head coach Nafuzi Zain admitted that defensive frailties were the main reason behind the 0-2 defeat to the Philippines in their Group A opener of the AFF U-23 Championship 2025 at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium here tonight. Although disappointed with the result, Nafuzi praised his players' fighting spirit, noting that most of them were still young and lacked experience at the international level. bootstrap slideshow 'Overall, our defence showed some lapses and nervousness at the beginning of the match, which allowed the Philippines to score. 'We tried to fight back and went all out to secure a draw, but once we were trailing, it became more difficult,' he said after the match. According to Nafuzi, most of the players were aged between 19 and 21, and the match served as a valuable opportunity for them to gain experience and maturity. Regarding the injury status of key players Alif Izzuan and Muhammad Haqimi Azim Rosli, Nafuzi said they were still awaiting a detailed report from the medical team. He also expressed hope that Malaysian fans would be able to attend and support the team should they progress to the next round, especially if they faced hosts Indonesia. 'Fan support is important. Even though they're not here, I know the team still has support from Malaysia.

IT outfit MMCS empowers Malaysian youth via strategic CSR initiatives in education and sports

MM Computer Systems Sdn Bhd (MMCS) has re-affirmed its commitment to community engagement and youth empowerment by sponsoring two impactful initiatives aimed at promoting educational enrichment and sports excellence among Malaysian youth. On July 6, the leading IT solutions and services provider through its wholly owned subsidiary Micro Technology Solution Sdn Bhd (MTS) supported the History and Patriotism Quiz Competition at AEON Mall Alpha Angle in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur. This event was intended to encourage secondary school pupils to deepen their understanding of Malaysian history while fostering a sense of national pride and patriotism. MMCS's sponsorship played a crucial role in facilitating this meaningful educational initiative, thus reflecting the company's dedication to nurturing informed and well-rounded future leaders. Further emphasising its commitment to youth development, MMCS contributed RM11,000 to the MBPJ (Petaling Jaya City Council) youth hockey team during the National Youth League event on July 10 at the MBPJ Headquarter. This financial support enabled young athletes to sharpen their skills, strengthen teamwork and showcase their potential at the national level. 'MMCS is committed to investing in our community, particularly in initiatives that support youth development and empowerment,' commented MMCS' director Macken Young. 'We firmly believe that education and sports are powerful tools for developing leadership, teamwork and a deep sense of community responsibility among young Malaysians.' At the end of the day, both initiatives form part of MMCS's broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy which emphasises sustainable impact through meaningful community engagement. By supporting educational and sporting programmes, MMCS continues to empower Malaysian youth to strive for excellence and make positive contributions to society. – July 15, 2025

Muay Thai star Jojo ready to turn the tide in Bangkok showdown

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Muay Thai prodigy Johan Ghazali Zulfikar is determined to return to winning ways when he takes on Moroccan fighter Zakaria El Jamari at ONE Fight Night 35 in Bangkok on Sept 6. Known to fans as Jojo, the 18-year-old will step into the famed Lumpinee Stadium looking to snap a poor run of form that has seen him lose three of his last four bouts. Johan took the fight world by storm last year with five straight wins, including four knockouts, earning himself a six-figure contract with ONE Championship. But the Malaysian-American has struggled to maintain that early momentum, managing just one win in four fights since. His most recent outing ended in a shock split decision defeat to Colombian-American Diego Paez. "I'm excited to be part of ONE Fight Night 35 and just happy to be back doing what I love," said Johan. "Zakaria is a tough opponent, but I'm hungry to get back in the win column. I've trained hard and I'll be at my best. "To all my Malaysian fans, thank you for sticking with me. I promise to bring the fireworks. It's going to be a banger." Zakaria is also in need of a bounce-back, having lost his last three fights, including a knockout defeat to Malaysian Ahmad Nor Iman Aliff Rakib last year. With both fighters desperate to reignite their form, fireworks are guaranteed in Bangkok.
