Driver was on phone, hit the brakes just 1 second before crashing into Minnesota deputy, charges say

A woman is facing criminal charges months after the crash in southwestern Minnesota that seriously injured 30-year-old Nobles County Sheriff's Deputy Arnold "Logan" Waldner. The driver, a 63-year-old woman from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is charged with criminal vehicular operation in connection to the crash on the afternoon of April 13, 2025. According to the criminal complaint filed last last month, she collided with Waldner's squad car on Interstate 90 in Dewald Township, just west of Worthington near the Iowa border. Waldner was at the scene to assist a Minnesota State Patrol trooper in a reconstruction of another crash on the interstate and was parked at the time with his emergency lights activated. The suspect denied being on her cellphone or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the complaint notes, and said she "kept braking, kept braking" before the crash. Another trooper who interviewed the suspect said while inspecting her cellphone, which she voluntarily handed over, a text message between her and a friend "revealed that [she] had been involved in other crashes in Sioux Falls," the complaint states. Further investigation of her phone, and her vehicle's airbag control module, determined she had indeed been in the middle of a call during the crash, driving at speeds around 83 mph and braking just one second before impact, according to the complaint. Investigators were unable to determine whether she was holding her phone at the time or using Bluetooth. Waldner, of Worthington, suffered "a severe traumatic brain injury and suffered multiple strokes as well as hemorrhaging on his brain," the complaint states. He is still recovering from his injuries, according to his CaringBridge account, making "slow but steady progress physically, and in his ability to speak." A fund has been established for Waldner and his family at Worthington's 1st State Bank Southwest, as well as an account through the Law Enforcement Labor Services' Benevolent Fund. The suspect's first court appearance is scheduled for Monday morning. She faces up to five years in prison if Premo contributed to this report.

Lakeville police investigating after pedestrian struck by car in roundabout crosswalk

Police in the southern Twin Cities metro are investigating after a driver hit a pedestrian, seriously injuring them Thursday afternoon. The Lakeville Police Department says officers responded to the intersection of Highview Avenue and 185th Street West just before 4 p.m. on a report of a pedestrian who had been struck by a car. Upon arrival, officers gave the pedestrian, identified as a 66-year-old woman from Lakeville, medical attention. She appeared to be suffering from life-threatening injuries and was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. Her condition is unknown. The driver, a 44-year-old man, was uninjured and remained on the scene, police say. Officers did not notice any signs of impairment from the driver. Police say preliminary information indicates the man had been driving a Chevrolet Malibu northbound on Highview Avenue and proceeded through a roundabout, intending to go westbound on 185th Street West. The pedestrian had been in the crosswalk on the west side of the intersection, moving northbound on Highview Avenue, when she was hit in the westbound lane of 185th Street West. The Lakeville Police Department's response was assisted by the Minnesota State Patrol, the Lakeville Fire Department and Allina EMS.

Man shot in the leg while driving on Interstate 35 north of Twin Cities

A man is recovering after being shot in the leg while driving on Interstate 35 north of the Twin Cities on Thursday morning. A passenger in the vehicle called 911 around 10:40 a.m., saying a bullet entered the car through the driver's side door, hitting the driver's leg. They had been traveling southbound on I-35 near the Harris exit, about 50 miles north of Minneapolis. Deputies arrived in the area and reported hearing gunfire consistent with rifle target shooting. Authorities began to canvas the area on foot and by drone to pinpoint the source of the gunfire. Law enforcement located three men doing target practice on a private property along I-35. The target had been positioned in the direction of the roadway, according to the sheriff's office. The three men are cooperating with law enforcement. Authorities say the estimated distance between where the men had been shooting and where the victim was shot is over 1,500 feet. The victim, a 48-year-old man from Duluth, Minnesota, suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening. He was transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul for treatment. The other three occupants of the vehicle were uninjured. The incident remains under investigation by the Chisago County Sheriff's Office along with the Minnesota State Patrol and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
