How to prevent doomscrolling from controlling you

What do modern social media users have in common with American soldiers who decided not to return to the United States after being held as prisoners of war in North Korea? More than you might think, according to one professor.
We're all potential victims of mind control, according to Rebecca Lemov, a historian of science at Harvard University and author of the new book 'The Instability of Truth: Brainwashing, Mind Control, and Hyper-Persuasion.'
The American soldiers were brainwashed into not wanting to go home through tactics including isolation, the fraying of social bonds and sleep deprivation, Lemov said. And she argues that the same things happen to many users of social apps, and it's awful for their mental health.
After decades of studying brainwashing in situations including POWs, cults and torture, she's concluded that 'this is something to which we're all susceptible, and that we consistently underestimate our malleability.'
But while social networks may manipulate our emotions, we can take steps to protect ourselves by drawing on lessons from her research.
Social media affects users differently, Lemov noted, comparing it to some people's experiences in cults.
'What's a cult for one person may not necessarily have the same effect on someone else,' she noted. When one person who is recruited decides to go all in, another 'may get certain things out of it, but not decide to give over their life savings or things like that.'
She said social media is the same way. It affects different people differently, perhaps partly because of past experiences. That's why, when we consume content online, it's wise to pay attention to how we're feeling.
'Social media really puts you in your head a lot,' she said. 'It's almost as if you're an entity without a body.'
What to do about it: Lemov pays attention to her own reactions by meditating every day, which gives her a way to tune in to sensations in her body and how they change. If a particular type of content leaves someone feeling anxious or upset, that's a helpful signal to consume less of it and even block those who create that kind of online work.
It's not just how different kinds of social media influence our emotions. Lemov said social networks may actively manipulate us.
In 2014, Facebook revealed it had conducted an experiment without users' knowledge showing it could influence their moods. The platform showed some users more positive content and others more negative content, then examined the emotions those users conveyed in their later posts. Those shown more positive posts seemed happier, and those who saw more negative posts seemed less happy.
'It was almost like a proud announcement (by Facebook executives that they) have the capability to … tune emotions as if we had a volume control,' Lemov said, noting that the social network received a lot of backlash after its announcement.
Spending time on social media can isolate people, and unlike with prisoners of war, it's ostensibly by choice.
'The more time is spent on social media, the less time is spent in social groups,' Lemov said, referring to clubs and bowling leagues that were more popular in the past. As a result, she said, people can miss out on developing social skills.
Lemov said she thinks that spending more time on social media can explain why so many people are lonely. It's a Catch-22 situation: People who are lonely tend to use social networks more, according to a 2016 study. And the continued use of social media could make them lonelier.
Being lonely is terrible for a person's mental health. One study conducted during Covid-19 lockdowns found loneliness was heavily associated with greater depression and thoughts of suicide.
What to do about it: To combat what former US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called an epidemic of loneliness, Lemov recommended challenging yourself to join groups that meet offline to socialize, whether it's a book club, a walking group, card game night, ultimate frisbee (or name your fun activity here).
It doesn't even have to be that organized all the time. I like to remind my students that they can put their phones away and talk to the people next to them on the bus, at lunch and at social events. Then they'll have an opportunity to strike up conversations and sometimes true friendships.
People who use social media more might also miss out on sleep — another thing that is essential to our mental health. Research has found that young people who use social media more tend to go to sleep later. Using smartphones in the middle of the night can also interfere with sleep.
Not getting enough sleep is terrible for mental and physical health. Studies have found that sleep deprivation is associated with much higher anxiety and depression.
What to do about it: Lemov recommended social media users work on what's called good sleep hygiene. I recommend my students leave phones outside their bedrooms when they go to bed for the night. Then it's easier to fight the temptation to stay up scrolling after bedtime or check the phone when waking up in the middle of the night, because the device isn't within arm's reach.
Using social apps more can mean we spend less time socializing in real life and sleeping — both essential to our mental health. By making sure we realize how social media use affects us, spending time socializing offline and getting enough sleep, we can stay in control of our lives rather than letting social networks control us.

A mama dog helped orphaned puppies 'without hesitation' — and soon, she will go up for adoption in North Carolina. 'Grace is one of the best mama dogs and cared for her puppies very well long after weaning them which is not typical of most mama dogs,' Carly Perin, who helped care for the mom, told McClatchy News in a June 4 email. 'Grace deserves the best possible family.' Grace raised the 'fragile' litter after she experienced her own tragedy. She was pregnant when she arrived at a Raleigh-area rescue and gave birth to nine puppies in March, animal organizations wrote in social media posts. 'But something was wrong,' Blazin' Trails Bottle Babies wrote on Facebook in April. 'One by one, her babies began to struggle. They were fading fast, battling severe pneumonia.' None of the puppies survived. But 'even in her grief, Mama Grace's gentle and nurturing spirit remained,' Peak Lab Rescue wrote. As Grace experienced 'heartbreak' at the rescue, a litter of abandoned puppies was found 'at a bus stop in a filthy, moldy cardboard box.' The newborns were hours old and were in desperate need of a mother dog to nurse them. Blazin' Trails Bottle Babies said it partnered with the rescue to see if it could help. 'In a beautiful twist of fate, Mama Grace stepped in as their surrogate,' Peak Lab Rescue wrote. 'She took them in without hesitation, showering them with the love and care they had lost.' Seven of the eight little ones survived and received names inspired by the Masters golf tournament: Augusta, Bryson, Ludwig, Rory, Scottie, Victor and Xander. As of June 4, Augusta was the only pup still available for adoption, Leslie Haller, an administrator for Peak Lab Rescue, told McClatchy News via email. Meanwhile, Grace is expected to be ready for a home in early June. 'Those once-fragile puppies are now thriving...,' Peak Lab Rescue wrote. 'Mama Grace gave them a second chance at life, and now we want to give her one, too.' The rescue is based in Apex, a Raleigh suburb.

Archaeologists uncover never-before-seen tombs of ancient Egyptian officials — expected to boost tourism
Several tombs of high-ranking Ancient Egyptian officials were recently uncovered by local archaeologists, shedding new light on a bygone civilization. The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the discovery in a Facebook post on May 26. It was translated from Arabic to English. Advertisement The tombs all date to the era of the New Kingdom, also known as the Egyptian Empire. They were found in the Draʻ Abu el-Naga site on the Nile River's West Bank in the Luxor Governorate. Hiring teachers from the Philippines could mean brain drain for Filipino schools

(Photo by Brian Venua/KMXT) Alaska school districts hiring from the Philippines are taking some of the country's best and brightest teachers. It's a win for Alaska kids, but what does that mean for students back in Southeast Asia? KMXT's Brian Venua explores brain drain and brain gain in Part 5 of a five part audio series, Mabuhay sa Alaska. When Alaska school administrators toured Pajo Elementary School, each class greeted them by welcoming them to the Philippines in both English and in Filipino. The administrators were there to see what the teachers they hire from the Philippines experience before moving to Alaska. But the students are the other side of that story — These are kids that get left behind when Filipino teachers are hired abroad. When recruiters opened up appointments for screening, all 720 spots were filled in just 16 minutes. The only advertising was a few posts on social media. But one consequence of hiring abroad is fewer quality teachers in the Philippines — a phenomenon known as brain drain. Conversely, Alaska gets brain gain. Hiring teachers has largely been a success for the state's kids. Recruiters on the 2025 trip picked some of the most highly educated teachers from the island nation. Kodiak Island Borough School District, for example, has more doctorate degrees from its 30 or so Filipino teachers than it does from its over 300 American hires. 'We were impressed with the quality of teachers that we met over there. And we were able to choose – from there – the top of the top,' said Cyndy Mika, the district's superintendent. She said there have been more remarkable candidates than they can hire during recruiting trips. It's hard to say what the impact is on the Philippines, though. Mika said that so far, a surplus of workers in the Philippines is helping address her district's shortage. 'A lot of the teachers that we interviewed in the Philippines, when they first got their start, it was as a volunteer teacher,' she said. 'They weren't being paid because there weren't jobs. They're producing too many teachers.' But Mika is concerned that taking so many highly qualified teachers could create a sort of skill ceiling there, if the country's best teachers keep leaving for Alaska and other destinations. That doesn't change that her priority is the kids in the community where she works. 'My number one concern as a superintendent in Kodiak is getting the best quality teachers we can in front of our students,' she said. 'If we didn't have these Filipino teachers, who would we have?' She said that without international hires, vacant teacher positions would lead to smaller teacher-to-student ratios and more burnout for her staff. Remittance and returning teachers It's not a one-way street, though. Many Filipinos working abroad send a lot of money home – 8% of the country's economy, according to some reports. Their experience, professional development and cultural knowhow gained in the U.S. is valuable, too, and sometimes comes back. Edna Auxtero is the administrator for Tagaytay Christian Academy, a private school about a two-hour drive from Manila. She said hiring Filipino teachers is a huge compliment to the country's educational system. 'I'm so proud that they're even interested to get Filipinos,' Auxtero said. 'That's always my dream – that the priority for employment in other countries are Filipinos.' TCA's principal, and many of its teachers, are alumni. Auxtero hopes some of them will go to Alaska someday and return with new skills. 'My hope is that they will come back to build the nation and impart all their knowledge, experiences to the next generation so that Philippines will rise up also,' she said. 'They can expect that for teachers under J1 visas,' said Serjoe Gutierrez, a Kodiak music teacher and one of the district's first direct hires from the Philippines. J1 visas require international hires to go back to their home countries after a few years. But Gutierrez, and many others, are on potential paths to permanent residency through H1B visas. But he still thinks about kids he taught at a private school in Iloilo City. 'I do worry, sometimes,' Gutierrez said. He thought about it even before coming to Alaska. 'I was thinking about it before resigning, but I told myself it's for me. The kids, they would gain more experience – they're still young. But I'm not getting any younger, so I need to do something for myself, too.' Kodiak is his home now. 'I do love my country. I do love the Philippines, but I think being a teacher in Kodiak – being here in Alaska – opened a lot of opportunities for me,' he said. He said he's not sure he would have had the same chances to travel and play piano and violin publicly in the Philippines. He hopes to be one of the first to get a green card through the school and stay in the U.S. indefinitely.
