USA Today28-02-2025

The UCLA Bruins (20-8, 11-6 Big Ten) and the No. 19 Purdue Boilermakers (19-9, 11-6) meet Friday at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Ind. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (FOX). Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's college basketball odds around the Rutgers vs. Michigan odds, and make our expert college basketball picks and predictions.
The Bruins are coming off a 69-61 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes Sunday at Pauley Pavilion, as G Eric Dailey led the way with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 3 triples.
UCLA is still just 3-2 straight up (SU) in the past 5 outings, but it is hot against the number, going 6-1-1 against the spread (ATS) in the past 8 tries. The Bruins have covered 3 in a row on the road, too, while the Under is 6-1 across the past 7 games.
Purdue is skidding hard, in the midst of a 4-game losing streak, including a 73-58 loss at the Indiana Hoosiers last time out on Sunday as a 4-point favorite. The Under has hit in 3 of the past 4 outings. G Fletcher Loyer was a bright spot, going for 20 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting against the Hoosiers.

UCLA at Purdue picks and predictions
Prediction
Purdue 70, UCLA 66
Purdue (-235) has to pull out of its nosedive eventually, and what better time to do so than at home. If this game against UCLA (+195) was on the road, it might be a different story. Still, you cannot risk more than 2 times your potential return on a team which has dropped 4 in a row, even if you toss it into a multi-leg parlay. There is just too much risk, and not enough value.
PASS.
UCLA +5.5 (-110) should be able to give Purdue -5.5 (-110) all it can handle at Mackey, in what has been a brutal stretch of schedule for the Boilermakers.
Despite the recent skid, Purdue is still a respectable 4-3 ATS in 7 home games inside the conference. This won't be easy. But, UCLA enters red-hot against the number, going 6-1-1 ATS in the past 8 games, including 3 straight covers on the road.
UNDER 138.5 (-110) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play at most.
The Under is 3-1 in the 4-game losing streak for Purdue, while going 6-1 in the previous 7 outings for UCLA. However, the Bruins have seen the Over hit in 5 of 7 road conference tilts, so there certainly is some risk here.

'Not everybody is marketable.' Purdue coach Matt Painter welcomes 'balance' House settlement brings

WEST LAFAYETTE — The financial allotment for college athletes went from one extreme (legally nonexistent) to another when the NCAA instituted name, image, and likeness (NIL), allowing student-athletes to capitalize on their marketability. The rich, essentially, got richer. On Friday, a nearly half decade battle through the court system concluded with the House vs. NCAA settlement which will allow schools to pay their athletes directly. Purdue athletic director Mike Bobinski stated previously Purdue would be a full participant up to the cap limit, estimated at $20.5 million. After Purdue basketball had its first summer practice on Monday, coach Matt Painter, who currently serves as third vice president on the National Association of Basketball Coaches board of directors, was asked if college basketball got better based on the ruling. "Some competitive balance is all we really want," Painter said. "It wasn't name, image and likeness before. This gives you more of a grasp of having a core amount of money to pay these guys, which is a lot less than the money that's going on right now. And then, anything on top of it is real name, image and likeness." The idea behind name, image, and likeness was for college athletes to capitalize on their notoriety via avenues such as autograph signings, hosting sports camps, or appearing in advertisements, for example. Painter mentioned specifically from his own program since NIL went into effect the names of two-time National Player of the Year Zach Edey, selected ninth overall in last year's NBA draft, and Braden Smith, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year and Bob Cousy Award winner for the nation's top point guard, as marketable athletes who fit the supposed NIL idea. Insider: Newcomers out, or limited, for first Purdue basketball practice: 3 things we learned "When everybody gets money, not everybody in Major League Baseball gets money in name, image and likeness and they're in the big show," Painter said. "If you watch a baseball game and there's 52 guys on two rosters, tell me how many guys are on those commercials. Two? Three? Four? Five? Not very many. That's the market. Not everybody is marketable that plays college basketball and gets paid. ... "There's a lot of things that haven't been fair across the board, so hopefully this equals things out a little bit."

LA Dodgers at San Diego Padres odds, picks and predictions

LA Dodgers at San Diego Padres odds, picks and predictions The LA Dodgers (40-27) and the San Diego Padres (37-28) play the middle contest of a 3-game series at Petco Park in San Diego Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET. Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's MLB odds around the Dodgers vs. Padres odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets. Season series: Dodgers lead 1-0 The Dodgers picked up a wild 8-7 victory in 10 innings in Monday's series opener at Petco Park, cashing as -121 favorites with the Over (8) hitting in the third inning. Neither of the starting pitchers had much to offer as Dodgers RHP Dustin May was trampled for 6 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits and 4 walks in just 5 innings, while Padres RHP Nick Pivetta was shelled for 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings. It was a game for the offenses. Dodgers 1B Freddie Freeman went 3-for-5 with a double, 2 runs and an RBI, C Will Smith (1-for-4) had a 2-run HR and 3 RBIs, and OF Andy Pages (2-for-5, RBI) and 2B Tommy Edman (2-for-5, RBI) each knocked in runs in LA's go-ahead 10th inning. Padres LF Tyler Wade (1-for-1) turned a 2-run deficit into a 6-5 lead with a 3-run triple in the bottom of the third, while 3B Manny Machado stayed hot with a 2-for-5 performance with an RBI double. CF Jackson Merrill finished 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs. The Dodgers have won 2 in a row, re-discovering their offense. After scoring just 1 run in the first 2 games of their weekend series at St. Louis, they've cobbled together 15 runs in the past 2 games, helping the Over cash in both outings. The Padres' 7 runs were the most they've scored in their last 11 games. However, the 8 runs allowed are also the most the pitching staff had surrendered in the last 11 games. Monday's Over snapped a 4-game Under run for San Diego. Dodgers at Padres projected starters TBD vs. RHP Dylan Cease The Dodgers haven't announced a starter at the time of this publishing. Cease (1-5, 4.72 ERA) makes his 14th start. He has a 1.31 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9 and 11.1 K/9 in 68 2/3 innings. Last start: Loss, 5 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 7 K in 3-2 setback at San Francisco Giants Thursday 2025 home stats: 1-2, 3.66 ERA (32 IP, 13 ER), 5 HR, 1.34 WHIP, 11.8 K/9 in 6 starts 2024 vs. Dodgers (regular season): 1-0, 3.38 ERA (10 2/3 IP, 4 ER), 6 BB, 10 K in 2 starts Career vs. Dodgers (regular season): 1-1, 2.61 ERA (20 2/3 IP, 6 ER), 1.45 WHIP, 12.2 K/9 in 4 starts Win your fantasy baseball league with For decades, BHQ has been helping players just like you win! I just don't trust Cease, who is 1-5 this season ... and that win was against a Cleveland Guardians team he knows well from his days with the Chicago White Sox. Plus, that lone victory came way back on April 2 in his second start of the season. While Los Angeles is having a bullpen day, it has a respectable relief corps with a 3.88 ERA, according to The Padres +1.5 (-200) will cost 2 times the potential return. That's too much risk just for a little bit of insurance. It might make you feel better to side with the home team since it named a projected starting pitcher, while there is uncertainty with who will lead off on the mound for the visitors. But, Cease is anything but a sure-fire option. AVOID. OVER 8 (+100) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play at best. We had an unexpected Over result in the series opener. In fact, it was an old-fashioned slugfest at Petco Park, a venue which usually doesn't see a ton of shootouts -- the Under is 18-12-1 there this season. With a bullpen game for LA, and a so-so Cease on the other side, we could get some big production, especially early on. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! New Bruins coach Marco Sturm has seen the passion of Boston fans — from both sides

BOSTON (AP) — Marco Sturm got his first taste of the passionate Bruins fans when he was traded to Boston for No. 1 overall draft pick — and soon-to-be NHL MVP — Joe Thornton. 'I mean, it wasn't my fault, right?' the former Bruins forward told chuckling reporters on Tuesday at a news conference to introduce him as the team's coach. 'I got here, and it was difficult. I'm not going to lie. You read the paper or social media or even you go on the street, people will let you know, right? "But also it pushes you. And I saw it in the positive way," Sturm said. 'I've got such good memories here. And I know the fans, as soon as they feel that there's something good happening here, they will support you. I know that. It kind of goes the other way, too. But I don't want to talk about that. I want to look forward.' A three-time Olympian and first-round draft pick who played five of his 14 NHL seasons for the Bruins, Sturm led Germany to a silver medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and spent the next six years in the Los Angeles Kings organization, the last three as head coach of its AHL affiliate. The 46-year-old former left wing replaces Joe Sacco, who finished the season as the interim coach after Jim Montgomery was fired in November. Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said that as the team tries to rebuild after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016 it was important to have a coach 'who understands our fan base and values the same things — of being incredibly hard out each and every night.' The Bruins marked the occasion with a news conference in their offices overlooking Causeway Street and the TD Garden. Former captain Patrice Bergeron, who assisted on Sturm's overtime game-winner in the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway Park, was in the front row as a show of support. German chocolate cupcakes — a nod to the new coach's heritage — were served. Sturm said he never considered coaching while he played, but he started working with his own kids before getting the job as head coach and general manager of the German national team in 2015. 'And that's where I really realized, 'This is actually me,'' he said. 'And that's where I have passion. That's where I'm good at. And then to go after that.' He put his plans for family time on hold and spent six years living in Los Angeles, away from his wife and children. 'I was chasing my dream,' Sturm said, adding that the children, who are now 19 and 21, missed Boston since moving away. 'My kids grew up there. They always wanted to come back. And here I am. Now they get their wish.' Sturm said he wouldn't have taken just any opening, but the Bruins presented a team that has strong goaltending in Jeremy Swayman and a solid core led by defenseman Charlie McAvoy and forward David Pastrnak that could push for the playoffs if it stays healthy. Boston also stockpiled draft picks and young talent from the midseason trade deadline purge that shipped off several veterans — including Brad Marchand, the only remaining member of their 2011 Stanley Cup championship roster. After posting 100-plus points in six straight non-pandemic-shortened seasons — including a Presidents' Trophy in 2023, when they set NHL records of 65 wins and 135 points — the Bruins finished with 76 points this season; only three teams were worse. 'Every job — it doesn't matter if you're in Boston or not — will be a challenge. But it's a good challenge. I love challenges," Sturm said. 'I know the expectations here. I know how it is. But as long as I'm putting my work and preparation in, I know I will be in good shape.' ___
