Nikhil Dwivedi says Mani Ratnam's Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai starrer Raavan was 'bizarre': 'Storytelling was faulty... All actors were wasted'
Nikhil Dwivedi shared his thoughts on Mani Ratnam's 'Raavan,' citing its bizarre storytelling and unnecessary alterations to the classic mythology as reasons for its failure. He acknowledged the film's visual appeal but felt the performances were wasted due to a flawed narrative. Dwivedi questioned the need to change a timeless story, despite recognizing the director's effort and dedication. Nikhil Dwivedi has opened up about his experience working on Mani Ratnam 's 2010 film Raavan, offering a candid take on why the Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai starrer failed to strike a chord with audiences. From calling the storytelling 'bizarre' to questioning the need to alter age-old mythology, Nikhil didn't hold back in his assessment of the ambitious project. No benefit from the film In an interaction with DNA, Nikhil admitted that Raavan didn't benefit him in any way. While acknowledging that some people may have liked the film, he maintained that it was, in his view, a poorly made project that failed to make an impact on his career. Criticism from a viewer's perspective When asked if he meant his character lacked depth, the actor clarified that his criticism wasn't from an actor's perspective but as a viewer. He felt Raavan was visually stunning and among the most aesthetically pleasing films, yet the performances were wasted, and the narrative was hard to follow. According to him, the storytelling was flawed and bizarre, perhaps an experimental attempt that ultimately failed to connect. Questioning the creative twist In Raavan, Mani Ratnam reimagined the epic by showing Ragini (Aishwarya Rai, based on Sita) developing feelings for Beera (Abhishek Bachchan, based on Raavan), while Dev Pratap (Vikram, based on Rama) kills Beera treacherously. Reflecting on this creative twist, Nikhil said that while every storyteller has the right to tell their version, sometimes there's an attempt to outsmart the original by adding unexpected changes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A new approach to mainframe passwords: Get rid of them - Modernization without disruption CIO | Rocket Software Undo He questioned the need to alter a story that has stood the test of a thousand years, written by masters like Valmiki and Tulsidas, wondering why there's a need to 'improve' upon such timeless narratives. Despite his criticism, Nikhil praised Mani Ratnam's effort, noting that while the attempt to improve the story didn't succeed, the hard work behind it was evident. He acknowledged that the filmmaker put in tremendous effort and dedication, adding that such is the nature of creativity — most times it works, but sometimes it doesn't.
