Severe storms threaten Miami and Broward Saturday with damaging winds, hail, and lightning
South Florida is under a mew NEXT Weather Alert Day this Saturday as the region braces for the potential of isolated strong storms, following a Friday that brought wind damage and hail to parts of Broward County.
Late Friday night, the Storm Prediction Center increased the risk for severe weather across the region, prompting the update. While the Florida Keys have since been removed from Saturday's threat zone, all of Broward County and most of Miami-Dade remain under elevated risk for severe conditions.
Hot, humid conditions could fuel Saturday storms
The NEXT Weather team says Saturday began warm and muggy, with heat index values expected to approach 100 degrees. Storm development is expected between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., with a focus on areas further inland and near the Florida Everglades. However, some stronger storms may drift east into coastal and metro areas.
Damaging wind, hail, lightning, and heavy rainfall remain the main concerns. After sunset, the atmosphere is expected to stabilize, leading to a calmer and warmer evening.

Looking ahead, isolated storm chances return Sunday but are slightly lower. By Memorial Day, rain chances increase to about 30% with afternoon highs staying in the upper 80s and low 90s through the holiday and into the next workweek.

Chicago weather: Temps soar well into the 80s by midweek
CHICAGO - It was a busy Sunday afternoon with severe storms in parts of Chicagoland. During the early to midafternoon hours, a severe storm tracked through DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, and Cook counties. The hardest hit area was Batavia in Kane County, where the storm produced 70 mph wind gusts and ping pong ball-sized hail. A cold front is moving through the region this evening, and clearing skies are expected behind the frontal boundary. Temperatures will drop into the mid 50s tonight under mostly clear to partly cloudy skies. Monday will be pleasant, but a few showers and storms will once again be possible. While severe weather isn't expected, storms will be capable of heavy rain and gusty winds. High temperatures will be in the lower 70s. Tuesday and Wednesday look great with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures. Tuesday will be in the upper 70s and then we're in the upper 80s on Wednesday. Scattered showers and storms return Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with temperatures in the mid 80s on Thursday, then dropping to the mid to upper 70s Friday through the weekend.
