‘Not in public interest': Protesters call for scrapping Rispana, Bindal road projects
Dehradun: Hundreds of daily wage labourers and social activists marched through the state capital on Friday, on the 95th anniversary of the 1930 Tiladi massacre, demanding the scrapping of the Rispana and Bindal elevated road projects.
They said the projects could displace thousands of slum dwellers, leaving them with an uncertain future.
"In the past year, the state govt has gone back on its word multiple times. Last year, 525 houses were demolished along Rispana, and now the same is about to happen on Bindal. Court orders are being used as excuses, while hotels, restaurants, and even govt offices located in riverbeds remain untouched. Only labour colonies are being targeted despite the chief minister's statement on Jan 17 that not a single colony would be demolished," said Sunita of the labour organisation Chetna Andolan.
Construction activities without authorised maps around the two rivers were suspended by the Uttarakhand high court last month. The state govt had submitted to the court that encroachments on river and stream territories in Dehradun will be eliminated by June 30.
Protesters on Friday argued that elevated road projects serve no real public interest. They are pitched as a solution to traffic congestion in the state capital, smaller infrastructural improvements like adequate parking, functional traffic signals, and greater use of public transport could ease pressure without uprooting thousands, added the protesters.

"Actions taken in the name of social impact assessment are neither lawful nor impartial. The estimated budget of the project is Rs 6,200 crore, while just Rs 143 crore has been allocated for essential needs like health infrastructure. This is deeply unfair to the people of Uttarakhand," said S N Sachan of the Samajwadi Party.
Members of several opposition parties and civil society groups were present at the demonstration, and a memorandum of their demands was submitted to authorities.
The protest was held on the 95th year of the Tiladi massacre, which followed a large 'satyagraha' on May 30, 1930, against the forestry policies of the princely state of Tehri Garhwal. While the Maharaja of Tehri was in Europe at the time, Prime Minister Chakradhar Juyal ordered a brutal crackdown on the protest. Soldiers opened fire on unarmed protestors, including women and children, in an incident reminiscent of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
Official records list 18 deaths, though the actual toll is believed to have been much higher.

Revenue official caught taking bribe; arrested
Lucknow: A land measurement officer posted in the consolidation department of Prayagraj was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 by the Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment on Wednesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to officials, a senior audit officer at the principal accountant general's office approached the department alleging illegal encroachment on his land by two locals, Dharmendra Kumar and Sanjay Kumar. Despite prior measurements ordered by consolidation authorities, one of the accused allegedly manipulated the process to submit a second report without notice, prompting the complainant to seek a fresh survey of his land. When the complainant visited the office on May 30, the assistant consolidation officer informed him that his request was forwarded to consolidation officer Harendra Singh. Upon meeting Singh, the complainant was allegedly told to pay Rs 10,000 to get the fresh land survey conducted with a "favourable report." This prompted the complainant to approach the vigilance department, which verified the allegations and set up a trap. On June 4, the vigilance team caught Harendra Singh red-handed while accepting ₹10,000 near Katra Police Outpost. He was arrested. The vigilance department has appealed to the public to report bribery or corruption by govt officials via helpline numbers 9454404859 (Prayagraj Sector) or 9454401866 (Headquarters).

Infra projects worth Rs 24,000 crore on the anvil to decongest Delhi: CM Rekha Gupta
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a Rs 24,000-crore infrastructure overhaul for the Capital. Addressing a press conference Wednesday, Gupta said major arterial roads — Rohtak Road (Punjabi Bagh to Nangloi), Ashram to Badarpur, and MG Road — have now been handed over to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). These roads will be upgraded into signal-free corridors with complete supporting infrastructure, including drainage, side lanes, and real-time monitoring systems. 'Earlier, multiple agencies led to fragmented execution and chronic waterlogging. Now, NHAI will be the single-point authority, with support from the Delhi Public Works Department,' she said. The press conference was held following a high-level meeting chaired by Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. The meeting was also attended by Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, Union MoS Harsh Malhotra, Delhi Cabinet Ministers, MPs, and senior officials from key departments. Gupta underlined several critical initiatives aimed at easing congestion and reducing pollution. These include: -A 7-km underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road -An elevated road from INA to the airport (eventually connecting Faridabad and Gurgaon) -Extensions of Urban Extension Road-II linking Alipur to Tronica City and the Delhi–Dehradun route. -A feasibility study is also underway for a tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport. – A 20-km link road from Inderlok Metro Station along the Munak Canal to Sonipat has been proposed. Gupta said this new route would relieve traffic from Mukarba Chowk and benefit thousands of daily commuters travelling between Delhi and Haryana. The CM said the NHAI is currently executing road and transport projects worth Rs 35,000 crore across the Capital. This comes in addition to Rs 64,000-crore worth of completed works, covering 1,578 km of roads. Furthermore, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for upcoming projects worth Rs 24,000 crore — spanning 128 km — have been prepared and await rollout. The NHAI has also sanctioned Rs 150 crore for the construction of Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Under Bridges (RUBs) to remove bottlenecks near railway crossings. Gupta expressed her gratitude to PM Narendra Modi and Minister Gadkari, stating, 'With Rs 1.25 lakh crore worth of decongestion projects in Delhi, the Centre has shown unparalleled commitment to transforming Delhi into a clean, green, and world-class city.' The Chief Minister also highlighted NHAI's eco-friendly practices, such as using inert solid waste and construction debris from Delhi's landfills in road construction.
